Mr. Lam's approach to teaching includes lecture, group work, readings, and opportunities to conduct research. Mr. Lam communicates clearly with students both in writing and verbally and does so consistently. Mr. Lam assesses students' comprehension by utilizing oral and written questions, do now activities, worksheets, and reading selections. In Mr. Lam's Wearable Electronics elective, students created LED pop-up cards, glow-bot, LED mask, and LED banner for the course. Mr. Lam has established a system of routines and procedures for his students to follow that require them to assume responsibility for writing the learning objective and the do now while attendance is taken. Whether students are completing a sewing project or engaged in cooking, students are given clear job responsibilities to ensure safety and timely completion of the task. Classroom interaction between Mr. Lam and his students are always very respectful as evidenced by the tone and demeanor of the class and the active engagement of all his students. Student work is displayed in the classroom and in the hallway and the extra help sign is clearly posted in the front of the room. Annual Evaluation Domains 1 and 4 Evaluators' Comments/Suggestions:
Mr. Lam has made a positive impact both at the Middle School and the High School. He mentored a new teacher in the department by providing her with a great deal of guidance and support to teach life skills classes and her regular Home & Careers classes. In addition, Mr. Lam took the initiative and provided the department with staff development for Wearable Electronics. Mr. Lam is always striving to grow as a teacher. Mr. Lam is learning how to program the Arduino to possibly incorporate into his Wearable Electronics curriculum. Mr. Lam attended the Long Island Family & Consumer Sciences Fall Conference, MAGIC (Meaningful Activities to Generate Interesting Curriculum, and STAR (Successful Teaching for the Acceptance of Responsibility). Mr. Lam's Lifespan Studies Core lesson plans showed that he prepared various units covering the entire human life cycle. The topics covered were: Infancy and Early Childhood with an emphasis on how children develop; Adolescence with emphasis on molding an identity and understanding personal relationships and bullying; Early and Middle Adulthood with emphasis on setting goals and the Elder Years. Mr. Lam is also active in the school community attending 9 out of 10 dances at the Middle School. He also attended all department meetings, faculty meetings and after-school staff development workshops. Mr. Lam is a member of the Long Island Family & Consumer Sciences Professionals. Mr. Lam enters and updates grades in the electronic gradebook on a regular basis. Mr. Lam contacts parents as necessary, regarding classwork, assignments, projects and any other concerns.
