TISSUE

Epithelium Tissue It is found on the surface of the body as well as it forms the outer and inner linings of the internal body organs. It works as an envelope Characteristic 1. The tissue has a large number of cells 2. The cells are closely packed together 3. Intercellular substance is almost absent or negligible 4. The cells are supported on a acellular basement membrane.

CILIATED EPITHELIUM

Simple Epithelium The cells in this tissue are arranged in a single row. Intercellular substance is almost absent or negligible. Squamous Epithelium 1. Cells are extremely flat just like flat tile of the pavement and thinner on the edges and swollen at the centre 2. Central swollen region contains a distinct nucleus. 3. Adjacent cells are connected by cementing substance 4. Cells are polygonal, almost hexagonal in shape. Location 1. Outer surface of the skin

2. Paritoneal lining of coelom, 3. Inner and outer lining of the blood vessels. Cubodial Epithelium 1. Cells are cube shaped 2. Each cell possess distinct spherical nucleus at the centre 3. Cells are polygonal Location 1. 2. 3. 4.

Thyroid gland Sweat gland hepatic duct Ureters

Columnar Epithelium 1. Height of the cell is much more than their breadth, hence they appear like pillars. 2. Their lower ends are connected with the basement membrane and are narrower 3. Each cell possess a large elliptical or oval nucleus at the lower narrower end of the cell Location 1. 2. 3. 4.

Inner lining of the alimentary canal Cystic duct Reproductive organs Lining of salivary duct

Ciliated Epithelium 1. Cells of this tissue are round, cubodial, columnar or conical. 2. They possess cilia at their free borders. 3. Cilia beat continuously and produce a current which serves to sweep any material Location 1. 2. 3. 4.

Roof of buccopharyngeal cavity Inner lining of trachea Uriniferous tubules Oviducts

Stratified Epithelium 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

It is complex epithelium made up of several layers of cell Cells of innermost layer are arranged on basement membrane Cells are living amd multiplying This layer is called germinative layer or malphighian layer Cells of this layer are round or cubodial

6. As a result of cell division, new cells are added on the outer side and the cells which are pushed nearer and nearer the outer surface become flat and dead due to loss of protoplasm. Location 1. Found on surfaces subjected to frictional wear and tear 2. Epidermis of skin 3. Lining of anus. Functions 1. Provides protection against dryness, friction, mechanical injury, pathogenic bacteria and harmful effects of certain chemicals. 2. forms internal lining of buccal cavity and alimentary canal to protect them 3. absorbs water and other nutrients 4. removes waster products and harmful substances Connective tissue
