Obama Inaugurates Some Hope for Entrepreneurs Reprint: Entrepreneur.com By: Dennis Romero | January 19, 2009 11:39 AM Despite being attacked during the election for his perceived lack of consideration for America's business owners (see Joe "The Plumber," et. al.), Barack Obama as president-elect has shown an almost wonkish savvy when it comes to the machinations of entrepreneurship in the United States. His recent proposal to fund a national network of business incubators to the tune of $250 million is a good example. While the money might be put to better use being injected into already existing (and often successful) incubators, the point is that some experts believe he gets entrepreneurship, and that he gets what works when it comes to job creation. Business incubators are usually nonprofit organizations attached to universities and funded by governments, successful entrepreneurs, chambers of commerce and business groups. Most of the time their goals are to create jobs in a region, to tap area brain trusts, and to have their city, town or region become known for a certain industry. The techheavy Silicon Valley in Northern California is a good example of a zone encouraged by incubators. In San Diego, a tech-friendly zone know as Silicon Beach was created after the local incubator, San Diego Connect, was launched at UC San Diego in 1985. Thousands of companies and tens of thousands of jobs have been created in the wake of incubation since the 1950s. San Diego's incubator has been so successful that it spun off a consultancy that helps incubators in other nations get off the ground. Incubators often help entrepreneurs with expertise, mentors, facilities and even cash. Sometimes they help owners findventure capital money or achieve IPOs, too. Dinah Adkins, president and CEO of the National Business Incubation Association, says Obama's interest in such entrepreneurship is unprecedented in recent times. Under President Bush, she says, "there was the notion that the private sector should take care of itself." A little bit of pump-priming in the way of incubators, however, can create new ventures and new employment. "I've seen the kind of value and impact these programs can have," Adkins says.

A Physical Death causes a Spiritual Awakening On March 10, 1984, Karl McIntosh and I started a "brief" dialogue that stretched out over 25 years to describe what came to be known as the Personalized Advertising Representatives eXport Trading Company (PARXTC). With degrees in engineering, graphic arts and advertising design, Karl was also known as Borafundi, when he worked as Art Director for the Performing Arts Society, formed in Los Angeles following the Watts Riots. To people around the world, including Alex Haley, author of Roots, Karl's oil portraits were prized beyond measure. To me, he was the brother I never had, the father I always dreamed of having, and the friend who was always there, through thick and thin, no matter where he might be or I might be, together or far apart. He moved away from Los Angeles in 2000, the same year I found out that my mother had died . . . 8 months after the fact. You see, I don't "stay in touch" too well. In fact, over a year had passed when I decided to call Borafundi for a brief "hello" last week that stretched into an hour-long conversation that picked up where our last talk had ended. . . just as naturally as if we had stepped out of the elevator, and continued a conversation begun on the way up, or down. Yesterday, I realized that we needed to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of PARXTC with at least a mention and review of all the people we had met, all the lives we touched, and all the joys that we had yet to bring to millions of people by uniting them all through a shared environment of helpfulness, guidance and fulfillment. When I called, his son told me that Karl was dead. Just stepped from one room into the next, and died. I do not recall what I felt. I do know I experienced thankfulness that we had the chance to talk once again. This morning, Karl was here with me. Looking through my eyes. Listening through my ears. Commenting on decisions that needed to be made, plans that needed to be modified, Goals that were important to achieve. . . in order to further our plans. I have understood, and made clear from the very first email in this thread that nothing is expected or required from the Sister Cities International staff or branches, or members. Nevertheless, whenever an opportunity presents itself, I will continue to support your mission in any tangible way I can. In the present case, for example, I am reaching out to encourage the Mayor of Newark, New Jersey to propose to Newark's Sister Cities organization that they jointly support the the East Meets West cultural/trade mission to China as an entry for the 2010 Sister Cities Awards contest, particularly if the tour can include a visit/performance in Xuzhou, Newark's Sister City in China. Nothing in that proposal exposes Sister Cities International to liability of any kind.
