Anatomy and Physiology of the Heart
Superior Atria - composed of the Right and Left Atria - primarily the receiving chambers. Blood flows into the atria under low pressure from the veins of the body. Inferior Ventricles - composed of the Right and Left Ventricles - the discharging chambers or the actual pumps of the heart. When they contract, blood is propelled out of the heart ad into the circulation. Superior and Inferior Vena Cava - Receives relatively oxygen-poor blood from the veins of the body Pulmonary Arteries - Carry blood to the lungs where Oxygen is picked up and Carbon dioxide is unloaded. Pulmonary Veins - Returns Oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart Atrioventricular valve - valve in the heart through which blood flows from the atria to the ventricles. Semilunar valves - Guards the bases of the 2 large arteries leaving the ventricular chambers. Aorta - The main trunk of the systemic arterial circulation Interventricular septum - Septum that divides the heart longitudinaly
