History 176 Activity 4: Take-home activity (30 points) DUE in class Sept 8 for discussion Name: Ian Dalton_______________________________________________________________ (You may do this activity in groups but make sure that you note the names of all group members) As you look at the images in the Visual Portfolio p. 139-148 and read chapters 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, and 18 in America Firsthand, please answer the following questions (be prepared to discuss answers in class). 1. As you look at plates 3-6 on p. 141-143 in America Firsthand - How did the Industrial Revolution impact the living conditions of workers? The industrial revolution had a bad impact on the living conditions of workers, life in slums brought about disease, crime, vice, and corruption. -

Why do you think did they live in such circumstances during the industrial revolution? Working class people couldn’t afford much better then slum life during the industrial revolution; they really didn’t have a choice.

- What do you imagine were the consequences of such living circumstances? The consequences of life in the slums were disease, shorter life span. The slums where full of crime. 2. As you look at plates 7-9 on p. 144-145 in America Firsthand - What was the positive and negative impact of the industrial revolution on the lives of children? Children would have to work long hours in factories for little pay during the industrial revolution. Children worked in horrible working conditions around dangerous equipment. Probably taught kids to be good workers.

- Why would children work in factories and why would managers hire them? Children would work in factories to help their family’s financial problems. Managers would hire children because employers wouldn’t have to pay children as much. - For what might the girl in plate 9 be looking? The girl may possibly be looking at her work schedule?

3. What was the major changes industrialization brought to the life of a brass worker? (examples) Trade is so broken up it takes 8 men to do the same job one person use to do. Machinery made work faster and cheaper. People learn to specialize in smaller easier tasks that decreases production time. Work use to all be done by hand.

4. How was it possible for Finnerty to witness a decline for workers, but for Steinway to witness an improvement in the life of workers? Are both right? If so, explain why. They both had different perspectives on the lives of workers. Yes because its opinion whether or not you believe quality of life is improving.

5. What were the problems at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company that led to so many deaths? (examples) The problems with the triangle shirtwaist company made escape from a fire difficult. The number of exits were inadequate, doors were locked, doors opened inward, the stairwell had no exit to roof. Burning floors could not be reached by firefighter’s ladders

6. How did the federal government react to and break the Pullman Strike in 1894? Do you think that was the correct action? (explain why yes or no) President Grover Cleveland sent 4,000 strikebreakers and 15,000 federal troops (almost half the U.S. army) to Chicago to battle with union workers and break up the Pullman strike. I think this was a bad move by Cleveland since your not suppose to use your army on your own people and attacking the union workers would probably cause other citizens to ralley behind the workers.
