If money can’t buy a scientific culture, how should a scientific community go about fostering the emergence of one? - Raul Kamantigue Suarez. In the article, what good is in science? by Raul Kamantigue Suarez (professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, California and an editor of the Journal of Experimental Biology Cambridge, UK) tackles on how society can build and use science in their lives. It is relevant that we appreciate science and contribute an idea on how science works significantly not just about the facts but what it really means to us. What good is science education? Do we really have to learn science? What benefits do we earn from science? These questions are few from what the article answered. Some of us have a wrong perspective of what science is but as I read the article it clearly stated that teaching science doesn’t aim to make all people a scientist but a person who has a critical thinking. Mr. Suarez, a student of Ateneo De Manila during his time realized that reading magazines in the library was better thing than to memorize lots of information that he gets from schooling. He realized that educate people, they should change the way they see the world like the unproven beliefs that usually accepted by the society without evidence. Critical thinking and understanding are developed in learning science which can be used in analyzing problems and situations so we would not jump into false conclusions. Scientific method should be learned by us, the non scientist, because we can use it in making decisions. As for me, we really need to be educated on how and what scientific method is. It would not be just beneficiary to scientist but also to other fields like accountancy, engineering and many more. Decision making is a process; we can’t jump into conclusion without examining the given data because the decision would not be accurate. It can also be used in real world by simple person, for example the flour that is suitable for cupcakes. We can use scientific method. We use critical thinking and understanding. This would us to broaden our mind on the issues of our country like poverty and reproductive control. On the other hand, we should respect the beliefs of another. This article highlighted that there’s more of less you see about science, the real purpose of science. I really like of what I’ve read and discovered. It widens my understanding and perception. I therefore conclude that scientist or non-scientist should have the qualities of what science really means.
