"Sometimes," said Williams, who's been around a lot longer than Vaughn, "special people are put in special situations like that. Sometimes youngsters are given an opportunity to make big plays and Jacque made that. That was a shot and a prayer and it was answered. He'll remember that for the rest of his life." There were several other memorable shots on a Wednesday night that more resembled the third week of the NCAA tournament than of December. Cherokee Parks hit two free throws with 3.3 seconds left and No. 3 Duke held off Iowa 79-76 for coach Mike Krzyzewski's 400th victory. No. 11 Louisville needed an

Skip Holtz named Connecticut coach
STORRS, Conn. (AP) - When Skip Holtz heads for New England to lead Connecticut's football program, he won't necessarily be in unfamiliar territory. After all, the 29-year-old son of Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz. was born just miles from the Storrs campus. The university announced Wednesday that Skip Holtz, Notre Dame's offensive coordinator, had been named Connecticut's head coach. But he doesn't expect to turn Connecticut into an East Coast version of Notre Dame. "I'm not coming in with a lot of high-priced terms because I was at Notre Dame," Holtz said Wednesday during a campus news conference. "I'm coming to the University of Connecticut to do the best job I can to field a competitive team." Holtz replaces Tom Jackson, who resigned Nov. 17 after the Huskies finished 6-5. 19.2 seconds left to knot things at 97-97. Garris was fouled at the buzzer by Julian Winfield and went to the line to shoot a pair with no time on the clock. The Illini were one free throw away from victory. But both shots missed their mark, and the third overtime was necessary.* Garris entered the game as a 91.4 percent free throw shooter, so his 12 of 22 performance was unexpected. "He'd made 24 straight going into Saturday night's game," Henson said. "I thought he'd make both of them. Overall, Kiwane did a good job. He just missed some shots down the stretch." "After he missed the second one,' I figured someone was watching over us and they wanted us to win," Missouri guard Melvin Booker said. Keene stood up for his teammate. "That's a tough place to put yourself in. People don't realize that's a tough shot to make in front of 18,000 fans." Those misses seemed to deflate the Illini, and the Tigers, now playing without Atkins, Crudup and Booker, took control. Sutherland drained a 3-pointer to start the third OT, and Missouri never trailed again. Illinois made things interesting late as Garris sank a 3-pointer with 4.8 seconds left to make
