QWERTY Cipher The name "QWERTY" for our keyboard comes from the first six letters in the top alphabet row. It was the work of inventor C. L. Sholes, who put together the prototypes of the first commercial typewriter in a Milwaukee machine shop back in the 1860's. The keys made their first appearance on a rickety, clumsy device marketed as the "Type-Writer" in 1872. Typewriters had a problem of parts sticking together when a proficient typist would type too fast. This keyboard layout kept the the most used keys far apart and thus would avoid any sticking.

Fill in the rest of the alphabet with the letters in order, skipping over the letters already in your code word. For our example we will use the word “TABLE”

Compass Rose Alphabet A compass rose is found on maps to show geographic direction. The four cardinal direction are North, South, East and West. The secondary directions are named by combining two of the cardinal directions with North or South being named first. We can make a code by using this grid. Start in the middle and find the direction and the number of steps for each letter. For example, the “Z” would be (SouthEast - 3 steps) or (SE3).
