Director Statement When I was a young boy my mother told me the story of how one night she had been chased home by footsteps in the darkness. This story always gave me chills. What would have happened if those footsteps had caught her? In many ways this was my inspiration for Alfred J Hemlock. Taking further inspiration from the works of Stanley Kubrick, German Expressionism and the fairy tale trope of “Little Red Riding Hood” I set about crafting a nightmarish world where a young woman, pursued by the devilish Alfred J Hemlock, experiences a terrifying disconnect between subjectivity and reality. The film, firmly positioned within the conventions of horror and suspense, is ultimately a tale about the importance of self-belief and how the demons inside of us are only ever as powerful as we allow them to be.

“Alfred J. Hemlock” is a Fiendishly Clever Horror Romp By Waylon Jordan on April 16, 2017 News A small SUV screeches to a halt at the mouth of an alleyway.  A man jumps out of the driver’s seat and circles the vehicle to drag his girlfriend from the passenger seat. She is crying and begging him to understand that she was not flirting with his friend at a party.  Guy throws Emily to the ground, calling her names, and drives away, leaving her to walk alone through the dark alleyway crying and wishing she’d never been born. Enter Alfred J. Hemlock…a spirit (or is it demon?) who offers Emily a reprieve from her loneliness, a respite from the horrors of her life.  All she has to do is agree to die. Thus begins, “Alfred J. Hemlock” a brand new horror short from writers Edward Lyons and Melissa Lyons.  The duo manage in 14 minutes to do what many recent feature length filmmakers have been unable to do in an hour and a half.  They create engaging, original characters that actually leave you craving more when the credits role.  In many ways, it’s the perfect storm where exactly the right director, producers, writers, and cast of actors came together to make magic in a film that is both scary and fun. Tristan McKinnon delivers a gleefully frightening performance as Alfred that manages to be one part Beetlejuice, one part Captain Jack Sparrow, and yet, something entirely his own.  In his capable hands, Alfred J. Hemlock is a showman, a huckster selling a treacherous bill of goods, and McKinnon embraces the role, completely disappearing into the top hat wearing villain.

Renaye Loryman stars as Emily, Alfred’s victim and foil, with emotional dexterity.  She is fragile and broken but she deftly turns that emotional vulnerability into a weapon against Hemlock’s arguments when he pushes her too far.

"Alfred J. Hemlock" is a Fiendishly Clever Horror Romp - Horro...

https://ihorror.com/alfred-j-hemlock-fiendishly-clever-horror-romp/

As a whole, the film works beautifully.  Though it takes place in the here and now, Alfred brings an air of Victorian/Edwardian antiquity to this ghost story.  It is gritty and dirty and beautiful due to its talented crew. Simon Harding, the director of photography, has been a camera operator on a host of films from Star Wars Episode III to The Hobbit trilogy.  He brings a keen eye to every shot.  Meanwhile, costume designer Sarah Hoke’s previous work has included prop dressing on Mad Max: Fury Road.  McKinnon told me himself that while he had a good idea of who Alfred was before filming began, it was Hoke’s costume that really cemented the identity for him and helped him inform the decisions for his performance.  Likewise, Joff Bush’s score creates a perfect atmosphere at once playful and bristling. Meanwhile Edward Lyons has been creating original shorts for over a decade, each with a different feel from the one before it.  He is a master storyteller and he brought everything he had to create “Alfred J. Hemlock”. With all of these fine talents, it’s no wonder that it was a finalist in this year’s iHorror Award for short films, nor that it will be making it’s world premiere in the upcoming Bermuda International Film Festival which runs May 1-7, 2017 in Hamilton, Bermuda.  The prestigious festival is an Academy Award qualifier in the category of short subject films.  This puts “Alfred J. Hemlock” in a place where few horror movies find themselves. I cannot recommend this short film enough.  Alfred and Emily will be telling their stories in festivals around the world and you owe it to yourself to see this one as soon as you can.  To keep up with all the latest new, you can follow “Alfred J. Hemlock” on Facebook, their official website, and on Twitter @AlfredJHemlock.  Check out the trailer below!

It tells the story of Emily (actress Renaye Loryman) whose boyfriend (Christian Charisou) abandons her in the night after an argument, leaving her to make her make her way home through an alleyway where she is terrorised by a mysterious entity, Alfred J Hemlock (Tristan Mckinnon).

It is only after reaching the depths of her despair she finds a strength that she never suspected she had. Edward, who is a film editor with Channel Nine, describes the character as a "demented version of Beetlejuice".

Melissa studied at Maine University in the United States where she won a Stephen King Scholarship in creative writing where she met the king of horror writing himself. She said she wanted to created a memorable, timeless character with l e

They chose the idea of a girl in an alley who is terrorised by a mysterious character. “I didn’t want to make it violent but supernatural horror,” she said.

“It’s not really clear if the Alfred J Hemlock exists or if he is a figment of her imagination. He appears as a timeless entity so he speaks well and has formal attire, but because he is not human he doesn’t always get it right when he communicates.” Edward and Melissa chose the concept of a character  threatened in an alley by a

mysterious entity for mainly one reason - it would only require one location and so would keep production costs down. They chose a back alley in Marrickville as the location but filming was for from simple. “It was the hardest film we have ever worked on in our lives,” Edward  said. “We were going to film it in back alley in Marrickville but there was torrential rain and because we were shooting at night the lights blew and we had to shut down the production,” he said. “We were huddled in an alley waiting for the rain to stop. “A second attempt at filming was also delayed by the weather. It took three attempts to film it.” The delays and production hiccups did not affect the final product. The film has been officially selected to have its world premiere at the 20th Anniversary Academy Award Qualifying Bermuda Film Festival, to be held in Hamilton, Bermuda from May 1 to 7.

Alfred J Hemlock will be screening in competition as part of the Bermuda Shorts Happy Hour program. It is the only Australian film to be selected for the Bermuda International Film Festival and has also been selected as one of the opening night films. “The festival features top films from the world’s leading film-makers as well as introduces new talent from around the world,” Edward said. “It can be the first step in an international film career. “If you win at the festival you can submit your film for the Academy Awards “With did this on our own without any industry connections,” he said.

Getting into Character with Tristan McKinnon in “Alfred J. Hemlock” By Waylon Jordan on April 19, 2017 News An actor’s process for creating a character is fascinating, unique to themselves and molded by personal experience.  Good actors create a character that elicits an emotional response to a story.  Great actors disappear completely into their character.  We love them; we hate them, but more importantly they become real to us.  When I sat down to chat with Tristan McKinnon from the short film “Alfred J. Hemlock” that will soon be making the festival circuit, I had an idea of who I was about to meet, but I could not have been more wrong and that doesn’t bother me one bit. It was 8:00 pm on a Saturday night here in Texas, but the sun was shining brightly in Australia when our call connected on Skype.  There sat Tristan McKinnon in a beautifully decorated sitting room.  His brother and sister were in the background smiling and waving and he introduced me to them, explaining that his family had leased the residence together to spend some quality time.

Now, I have to admit I was taken aback.  McKinnon is quite simply, a charming young man with an easy, infectious laugh and leading man good looks.  He is full of life and radiates an almost kinetic energy as he talks about his latest project.  In short, he’s everything his character was not and it was only then that I realized just how great this young actor was. After a few minutes of chatting and getting to know one another a bit, we got down to the business of talking about his alter ego Alfred, and how he came to create this fiendish creature who feeds on the souls of the lost and lonely. It all started with a Facebook message.  McKinnon saw that Edward Lyons was working on a different film and sent him a congratulatory message.  A short while later, Lyons replied thanking him but also telling him that he had another film that he was working on and he thought McKinnon would be perfect for the lead.  It wasn’t long before the actor had a script and was diving deep to find out just who Alfred J. Hemlock was. The actor was immediately struck by the fact that there was an actual story to tell without a lot of extraneous action, and he was over the moon about it. “It was probably the first short film I’ve done where it was mainly a dialogue driven piece,” he explained.  “It was all set in an alleyway.  It was two characters telling a story.  Coming from a theater background and being a theater actor that was really great to me.  And here’s Hemlock and I get to really explore who he is and why and how he came to be this spirit or demon that he is.” “Alfred J. Hemlock” does indeed take place in one alleyway late one night.  Emily (Renaye Loryman) is abandoned by her boyfriend, Guy (Christian Charisiou), after he accuses her of flirting with other men at a party.  As broken hearted Emily makes her way down an alley, she meets the villainous Alfred J. Hemlock, a creature intent on

They were booked for a late night weekend shoot.  Two days were needed to film the short and that first weekend, nature stepped in and rained them out.  Not to be deterred, Lyons booked a second weekend.  They had to bring in a different director of photography as the first had to be on a commercial shoot.  Nature was on their side this time but due to a mechanical error, every single shot was underexposed and too dark to be used.  It was now a matter of principle for Lyons and the cast and crew.  A third weekend shoot was booked, the cast came in and a third DoP was brought in.  Nature and mechanics complied this time and the entire shooting schedule went off without a single hitch. As frustrating as it all was, McKinnon points out that it allowed him even more time to develop a closer relationship to Alfred and the way he manifested.  It also allowed Lyons to bring even more mania to the section of the film in which Alfred torments and tortures Emily in an attempt to break her. “There’s this part of the film where I think Ed decided to go wild style.  He threw in homages to Kubrick and Saw and it was all very spontaneous.  It was kind of great this sort of montage of Emily’s torment.  He found this tricycle for me to ride and it worked so well with Hemlock’s personality.  And it’s kind of out there, but it also points back to these films that we all know and love.” McKinnon lamented the end of shooting and says he’d return to this character again if given the chance. “It’s funny,” he says, “but you almost want him to win, even though he’s a really bad guy.  It would be fantastic to reach into his history and find out more about him.  Was he cursed?  Is he a demon?  Does he answer to someone else?  In my mind, he might be a demon who fell when Satan had his battle with heaven.  He’s removed from it.  And so he hungers for the light that he is barred from, and he hates that light as much as he hungers for it.  So he seeks it out in the only way he can.  He finds these people whose souls burn brightly and takes it from them.  The problem is it’s never enough.  There’s a lot to explore there.” I’m with you on that, Tristan.  And with luck, just maybe we’ll see more of Alfred J. Hemlock in the future. For more information about the film and to keep up to date on festival appearances, you can follow them on Facebook, their website, and on Twitter and Instagram at @AlfredJHemlock.  Currently, it’s slated to make its debut at the Academy Award qualifying Bermuda International Film Festival in May of 2017.

Overview Can you name one iconic Horror villain? Answers may erupt with ease. From a production standpoint, the creative process is anything but easy. Horror is the only genre where creating a marketable entity is of utmost importance. Many avenues are considered to bring an original character to life. Components need to come together with seamless fashion. Wardrobe and makeup design are major influences. Yet, poor acting can hinder a connection between the character and audiences. On the topic of acting, every Horror icon has in some way a trademark portrayal. On May 1st, 2017 Alfred J. Hemlock will make its world premiere. The film is an Australian based Horror short film that delves in the supernatural.  The premier will unfold at the 2017 Bermuda International Film Festival. According to the press release, Alfred J. Hemlock is a crossgenre production. Comedy, Fantasy, and Horror comprise the theme. Alfred J. Hemlock ties into the opening topic to this review. Here we have a production that embodies the titular antagonist. Consideration went into every aspect of design and execution. The end result is a defining Horror Icon.

Pros Screenwriters Edward Lyons and Melissa Lyons made use of the allotted running time. The duo created an impacting narrative equipped with underlying philosophical commentary. A slate of compelling characters reinforces the story. These attributes turn this film into a stellar exhibition. Each of the characters has adequate developmental composition. For instance, Emily, the protagonist, undergoes a riveting metamorphosis. This is a thread some feature films fail to address with their leads. For the villain, it too undergoes dramatic development. This change comes in the form of a literal sense. Is Alfred J. Hemlock Horror redefined? Yes. The film does not pay homage nor does it equate to established formulas. Instead what’s presented is a unique imaginative construct. The plot is simplistic yet interesting with developing circumstances teasing the viewer. There’s more to explored from this rich narrative. The titular antagonist grips interest and does not surrender till the ending credits. The performances were outstanding. A believable chemistry existed between each interaction and character. In fact, the theme of the film is classic good versus evil. A yin yang flux of internal and external strife provide the foundation to each character. Each

actor added a new layer to this complexity. This allowed the roles to mature across Acts. The cast as a whole deserves to share spotlight merit. Some may favor the antagonist as the show stopper. Yet without its conflicting parallel, this character would not have its success. Alfred J. Hemlock is one of the few Horror short films seen that exhibit creative camera work. Edward Lyons used trained attention into getting superb captures. From overheads to vertigo inspired effects the creativity behind the camera is evident. Aiding in setting ambiance is cinematographer Simon Harding. The stage, in this case, a typical alleyway felt had a life of its own. The costume designs are also a highlight. Sarah Hoke provided distinct looks for these complicated set of characters.

Cons Computer generated effects do make a cameo in this production. Its presence wasn’t overextended but the CGI did create a minor flaw. The titular antagonist appears as a supernatural cliché as it unleashed a torrent of roaches. Also, the antagonist’s flamboyant demeanor conjures one notable Johnny Depp role. On a lighter note, one major problem were the cockroaches. Production, why oh why did you infuse these disgusting creatures to the storyline! Personal distaste to this diabolical impervious insects made the film cringe worthy. http://decaymag.com/

In closing Alfred J. Hemlock excels expectations. The film offers an intriguing story proposing many interpretations. The characters were fresh and the cast did an amazing job bringing these fictional beings to life. Contained are the fundamentals of a new Horror icon. It would be amazing to see a continued expansion to the Alfred J. Hemlock mythos. Horror comedy film shot in local laneway

MAKING the long journey from Stevens Lane in Marrickville, horror-comedy short film Alfred J. Hemlock will make its Hollywood debut at the Dances with Films festival on June 1.

 Story appeared in: nner

est imes | May 17th, 2017

IT was a case of third time lucky for the cast and crew of the short film, Alfred J. Hemlock, when they were shooting in Stevens Lane in Marrickville. Produced and written by Melissa Lyons and her husband Edward, who also directed the horror-comedy short, the story is about Emily (Renaye Loryman) whose boyfriend (Christian Charisou) dumps her from his car after an argument and walking home through a back lane, she encounters the mysterious and terrifying Alfred J. Hemlock (Tristan Mckinnon). Filmed in 2015, Edward said that just a single filming location should have been easy but it turned out to be "the most difficult" film they have ever worked on. He said their first attempt was wrecked by torrential rain which blew out the lights and shut down production. Their second attempt didn't fare much better with more bad weather and a technical hitch meaning they ended up with almost no useable footage. "I was ready to throw myself under a bus, it was pretty devastating," he said.

"In the end the first two attempts were a bit like an elaborate dress rehearsal. "In fact, I think the film we've got now wouldn't have been anywhere near as good without everything we went through." The rain also led to a memorable and atmospheric shot of the Hemlock character skipping down the alley while wielding an axe. "I was shouting 'just shoot it' because I was worried for the first time that the rain would stop," he laughed. Post production has taken some time, but fortunately the film's visual effects were completed just in time for it to premier at the Bermuda International Film Festival earlier this month and in two weeks, it will also screen at the prestigious Dances With Films festival in Hollywood. Edward says the US screening will also be the first time the three-person cast will see the finished product. "It's been a long wait for them but I think it will be worth it."

Hemlo!, as a monster, is everything I love. A dark, eccentric character whose charisma and charm are only matched by the depraved desire for murder hidden in that facade he embodies that spectral anti-life that everyone secretly fears alone in the night. A deranged mesh of Beetlejuice and Ja! Sparrow in voice and personality, he has several otherworldly qualities of devils and tri!ster gods throughout history. Using a combination of techniques from playing on Emily's insecurities and offering her "relief" to an all out campaign of psychological and visual terrors to try and make her willingly sacrifice her life to him, Hemlo! uses his $ll fear$l retinue to catch his prey. The film ends with each of the principle characters getting exactly what they deserve.

In a darkened alley, Emily (Renaye Loryman (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm8252733/?ref_=tt_cl_t1)) and her jerk of a boyfriend (Christian Charisiou (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2423347/?ref_=tt_cl_t3)) are in a heated !ght. Verbally abusive and cruel, her supposed lover leaves her alone, sobbing. She collapses in despair and wish that her life were over. Out of the darkness, Alfred arrives. Alfred J. Hemlock (Tristan McKinnon (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm5544759/?ref_=tt_cl_t2)) is his name and death is his game. A sort of swaggering mix of Captain Jack Sparrow and Mr. Dark (http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0478518/?ref_=tt_cl_t2), Hemlock o"ers death as a means out of Emily’s depressing moment. After convincing her of his supernatural abilities the very real possibility that this could be the end sinks in and the chase is on.

Alfred J. Hemlock is a Horror Short To Die For - HorrorBuzz

21/6/17, 9)35 pm

For a 14 minute short, this is an exceptionally produced piece. Fantastical, perhaps a little goo !er than it should be, Alfred J. Hemlock looks and feels like a feature. The special e"ects are top-notch and pristine, again on par with big screen o"erings. They are also used just enough to make the point, which on occasion is a big point to make. Entertaining, creepy, and undeniably fun, Alfred J. Hemlock gets most everything perfectly right. Had I one complaint I would have dialed back the silliness of Hemlock just a bit. When he gets to “creepy aggressor” mode it’s on. He just has a little too much playfulness for me to take him so seriously. Such a small qualm, but one that, if addressed could create a new horror icon. A creeper that knows your history, knows your despair, and can o"er a way out at your weakest moments in life. How does the !lm end? You can see it this weekend at the Dances With Films Festival in Los Angeles ant the world famous TCL Chinese Theater.

Dances With Films 2017 Interview: Daily Dead Chats with the Filmmaker and Cast of ALFRED J HEMLOCK 6/14/17 5:16 AM by Heather Wixson

This past weekend, the 2017 Dances With Films festival wrapped up here in Los Angeles, and before we said goodbye to the fest’s impressive slate of indie genre projects, we had the opportunity to check out the stellar short film, Alfred J. e

from co-writer/director Edward Lyons and co-writer/producer Melissa

Lyons. It stars Tristan McKinnon as the titular character who stalks a young woman named Emily (Renaye Loryman) one night down a darkened alley and terrorizes her, only to have Emily push back against her supernatural antagonizer in some unexpected ways.

Daily Dead had the pleasure of chatting with those involved with Alfred J. e

during the festival, where they discussed how the project came to be,

collaborating with each other, paying homage to the horror genre, and much more. And for more information on Lyons’ short film, be sure to check out their website

Fantastic job, everyone. Edward, I’d love to hear what inspired this story  and what made you decide that this character would make for a great  short film subject. Edward Lyons: Well, it's interesting. It started off as a really simple idea because the previous film that I had done was called A Man on the Edge, which was about a guy on a cliff top about to commit suicide. It had a lot of memory flashbacks for him whilst he was there. Consequently in shooting it, it meant a lot of locations. So I just thought that I wanted the next shoot to be more concentrated on performances and that we should just keep it in the one place. I had this idea that was needling away at me about a girl walking down an alleyway, and some person or entity, who might try to mug her or something like  that. It was not going to be supernatural at all. Then, somewhat, it was inspired by a story my mother told me when I was a little kid, when she lived in the inner city parts of Sydney and she was walking home one night. She was walking down this alleyway, and she could hear these footsteps behind her, and as she sped up, so too did the footsteps. She broke out  into a run to get out of this alleyway back into the main street where the lights  were, and the footsteps behind her were running, too. I asked her, "Did you ever  turn around and see who it was?" She said, "No. I never once turned back until I  hit the front door of the home."

That idea had sat with me, so it kind of came together with the fact that I wanted  to keep it simple, one location, and that idea, that story that I'd grown up with. It  developed from that, and it ended up becoming the most difficult film I've ever  shot in my life. And as I was working on the concept, I thought if we went with a  more straightforward route, this could be quite unpalatable for certain members  of the audience. It became something that didn't interest me. I didn't want to go  into those dark territories and be completely literal. https://dailydead.com/dances with lms

As I was working with Mel, who is a big horror fan, she suggested that we should push it into the realm of the supernatural, because then it becomes metaphorical,  and allows an audience to make a connection to that character in that situation.  At first, the film was originally called The Alleyway, and it wasn't really centered  around the character which Tristan plays. But the first shoot was a disaster  because it was raining. Sydney's heavens just opened up, and a torrential rain  was coming. The first AD [assistant director] came up and said, "Here's the weather report on the app, and it showed even more clouds coming in, and more rain." So we just had to call it. Then, the second night we didn't get through the shoot because we had same problem with the weather. Then we regrouped a few weeks later and said, "Okay, we'll go back out." I had to get a new cinematographer and a new gaffer, because we were working with people in the industry who do this work for a living, so they had gigs now, which meant we had to get some new people in. But we had a technical fault with the cameras, so everything that we shot that weekend was just a bust. It was something wrong with the camera and everything—it didn't capture the media properly. It was really underexposed for some reason. We then had to regroup again, and I found a producer who had really good connections, and he knew a guy who was a cinematographer named Simon Harding. He'd shot things like King Kong (2005), Where the Wild Things Are, and he shot on Star Wars [Episode III – Revenge of the Sith), too. Having to delay things actually gave me and Mel some time, so the first two shoots were kind of like very elaborate dress rehearsals for us, and it gave us time to be able to germinate on the ideas and how to develop the story. We wanted to do an homage to certain horror films, and we were trying to work in how we could create that. I was very inspired at the time by Stanley Kubrick, and particularly The Shining. You know how creepy those scenes are, when Jack Nicholson goes into the men's room, and there’s a mysterious man who says to him, "How are you, sir? Danny’s a very naughty boy, if I may be so bold, sir." And that's just so weird, and it's like, "Is he talking, is that person really there, or is he an unreliable narrator, and is it all in his head?" So we set that up with Renaye [Loryman's] character. We planted seeds that she may be an unreliable narrator, and this all could be in her head, and maybe it's not, and maybe it's a manifestation of something inside her, too. Something else that was important to us was that I believe that characters should be different from the beginning as they are at the end of story. If they're not and nobody changes, then you're kind of left at the end thinking, "Yeah, but so what? If the characters on the screen didn't care enough to be affected by it, why should I be affected by it?" So that was a big part of this story. https://dailydead.com/dances with lms

Tristan, how was it for you, getting into the head of this character? Tristan McKinnon: The important thing was to think about if Alfred J Hemlock was a spiritual animal, then where is that from? And I have got a Christian background, so I kind of used my own understanding of that theology, to basically set up the premise of darkness, and good and evil. I used the Judeo Christian setup to be able to place Hemlock. As I started to explore, what struck me was that Hemlock was trying to not expose his cracks, and I felt that his sense of evil, his nature wants to overflow out because he's so hungry. He has this desperate desire, this insatiable desire to feed, because that's his life source. I thought I could imagine if I was, say, an angel that was close to God in heaven,  close to light, and source, and love, and all of that. Then I decided I was now  separate from it, and I no longer wanted a part of it, I was now darkness. Yet the  only sustenance I can get is to have life. I imagined just being hungry, insatiably  hungry for all of eternity, and how that would just drive you mad. That's why I  wanted to tie myself up in a stretchy rope, to sort of feel what it would be like to  want to burst out all the time. Hemlock is a veneer and his nature at any  moment wants to crack through, and so he's using a lot of strength to actually  hold himself back, because he's a wolf in sheep's clothing. We did prep a lot, but there was so much to explore. That's why having three goes at it was amazing because we were given three goes in front of a camera, and I was able to go deep. There’s a lot to absorb about a character like this, and a lot of exploration work I wanted to do just getting into the physicality of a creature that is containing himself. It was just playing around with different ideas, and a lot of things developed when we reeled it in, and as soon as I got into costume, too, almost in an instinctual way. It just felt right.

Renaye, so much of this short is about Emily’s arc and finding her inner strength. Can you discuss your approach to the character? I think she’s very relatable on a lot of levels. Renaye Loryman: Yeah, very much so. I remember reading something once that said the greatest threat most women face is that we're born female. That's unfortunately how it is, and I do want to see that change in my lifetime. Emily was like a memory, very much a memory of an experience that I had had. Being quite young, I grew up in a country town and moved to Sydney, which is a big city in Australia, with a boy. He was terribly unpleasant to me, and it was just a really awful time. To the point where he actually left me. I didn't even break it up with him. He left me. I'm in this big city alone and feeling very vulnerable. Then, the second he left, I was able to get stronger. A lot of the scenes where Emily is struggling emotionally was me just remembering that time in my life, and being treated so awfully for no reason. And looking at the character Emily, I was like, "You don't deserve this. You haven't done anything. You don't deserve this.” But I understood how she felt, And some of her lines where she says, "I'll do better next time, I promise." Even saying that now, I still feel choked up, because it’s a hard memory. But all of us, and that includes myself, have a 100 percent success rate of being able to survive these awful situations, so I really related to that aspect of Emily. Ed wanted to do this film and he said to me, "I want to do a film with you." We worked together in another place, as our day job, and he told me this idea about a girl getting terrorized in an alleyway. He said, "I want you to do that,” because I guess he and Melissa knew my triggers when it came to what would really bring all of this out in me. Also, too, this was the first short film I'd ever worked on to this quality. Part of it was, I felt very out of my element and afraid of the whole process of filming. I remember sitting in the car and just thinking, "I can't do this." I don’t know, I guess it was this fear of, "I can't do this! I'm not an actor! What am I doing?" I'd done a few plays in community theater, but I never thought of myself as an actor. Ed said something to me that really brought it all forward, "You're doing what you're meant to be doing," and that really helped me.

it, we wanted to write something that was really powerful in the short film form. We were trying to say, "Okay, this is an art form unto itself, and we want to be able to tell a great story in 14 minutes or less. It also had to have a great, strong  beginning, and a middle, and an end. That was our goal, to be able to not write a  novel, but to write something strong in the short form. But in doing so, now we  have had quite a few people now saying to us, "Wow, I want more of this world."  One person even said to me, "My biggest criticism of the film is I want more." I  think that's because everybody put so much work into it. It has become  something bigger than we thought it could be, and that's been exciting to us and  other people, too.

“Alfred J Hemlock” (2017): Diabolical Charmer Seeks to Lure in a Meek Victim in Exceptional Humorous Horror Short ! July 1, 2017 (http://gruesomemagazine.com/2017/07/01/alfred-j-hemlock-2017-diabolical-charmer-seeks-luremeek-victim-exceptional-humorous-horror-short/) " Joseph Perry (http://gruesomemagazine.com/author/josephperry/)

Australian short chiller Alfred J Hemlock is a top-notch short Hlm that balances eerie menace with whimsical charm and a dash of dark humor. The production values are marvelous and the acting is a delight in director Edward Lyons (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2640825/?ref_=ttfc_fc_dr1)’ latest effort.

Emily (Renaye Loryman (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm8252733/?ref_=tt_cl_t1)) is unceremoniously dumped — pretty much literally and Hguratively — by her boyfriend Guy (Christian Charisiou (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2423347/?ref_=tt_cl_t3)) in a dark alley after an argument about how she behaved in front of his friends. The area is no place for a lady by herself to be, and she soon encounters the mysterious Alfred J Hemlock (Tristan McKinnon (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm5544759/?ref_=tt_cl_t2) in a fantastic performance), who offers her rest from her world-weary existence. Giving any more of the story away would be just short of criminal.

Tristan McKinnon gives a masterful performance as the diabolical title character in director Edward Lyons’ Alfred J Hemlock. Edward Lyons, who also cowrote the Hne screenplay with Melissa Lyons (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm5313615/?ref_=ttfc_fc_wr2) and edited Alfred J Hemlock, directs with a conHdent hand and a solid eye for visuals. Although all of the action takes place in or next to an alley, Lyons and crew manage to build a dizzying atmosphere that makes everything feel larger and quite magical, including the enclosed space in which the story takes place. Simon Harding (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0362398/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cr9)’s cinematography is a thing of beauty, as is the makeup work by Aidan Hirn (AKA Vianna Houghton) (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm6159285/? ref_=ttfc_fc_cr17). The visual effects by Ahmed Nashabe (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm5610928/? ref_=ttfc_fc_cr26) and crew are impressively rendered and a lot of fun to watch. Joff Bush (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2289859/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cr8)’s score adds a great deal to the feel of the short, as well.

Renaye Loryman plays Emily, a woman at such a low point in her life that she feels like dying. The performances by the three actors are all terriHc. Renaye Loryman gives an appealing performance as the sad, desperate Emily, and she does deHnite justice to the character arc created by the Lyons. Christian Charisiou gives a believable performance as a hostile hothead. As good as these two performers are, though, Tristan McKinnon raises the bar with his energetic portrayal of the sinister, baleful Hemlock. This role calls for a big performance without quite going fully over the top, and McKinnon knows when to play things up and when to reel them in a bit. He has made the character all his own.

Christian Charisiou portrays Guy, Emily’s obnoxious boyfriend. Alfred J Hemlock is on the early legs of its Hlm festival run, and is most certainly a short Hlm to seek out. Everyone involved should have huge things in store for their futures. A former northern Californian and Oregonian, Joseph has been teaching, writing, and living in South Korea since 2008. $ Gruesome Reviews (http://gruesomemagazine.com/category/gruesome-reviews/), Super Scary Shorts Saturday (http://gruesomemagazine.com/category/gruesome-reviews/super-scary-shorts-saturday/) % Ahmed Nashabe (http://gruesomemagazine.com/tag/ahmed-nashabe/), Alfred J Hemlock (http://gruesomemagazine.com/tag/alfredj-hemlock/), Christian Charisiou (http://gruesomemagazine.com/tag/christian-charisiou/), Edward Lyons (http://gruesomemagazine.com/tag/edward-lyons/), Renaye Loryman (http://gruesomemagazine.com/tag/renayeloryman/), Sarah Hoke (http://gruesomemagazine.com/tag/sarah-hoke/), Simon Harding (http://gruesomemagazine.com/tag/simon-harding/), Super Scary Shorts Saturday (http://gruesomemagazine.com/tag/super-scary-shorts-saturday/), Tristan McKinnon (http://gruesomemagazine.com/tag/tristan-mckinnon/)
