Since than Warid Telecom successfully launched the services covering 28 cities with a total population of around 32 million people. Warid Telecom with low rates to capture the market with already giants operating the cellular world of Pakistan is the major task for Warid Telecom major competitor is mobilink with already 10 million subscribers it is not a easy task to break the market.
Warid Telecom did a great job when launched Warid didn’t get the attention of the subscribers after a month of so the boob started I myself aren’t willing to purchase the connection as the company in start didn’t leave a huge impact to switch the mobile connection. After one to two month after the launch of Warid Telecom people started purchasing the connection and I myself purchased one the main feature about Warid Telecom that attracts me its Friends and Family feature with rates of 1.90/mins. The rates are the cheapest in the market and with 30 sec billing feature makes it worth while to try once.

Warid Telecom has some features as low calling rates 30 sec billing. Coverage is improving and hope will be improved as the company grows. Warid Telecom according to me targeting the student class rather than business men. Some of the features are good but still there are some major upgrades that Warid higher management team should look into. Warid Website looks like site designed by immature non professional group of people. Warid site is not user friendly loading time is slow the navigation is as bad as it can be no voice user lost in to the site the landing page with login information confused the user who came to get some info hard to find tariff as no link on the main page. With session Id passed even a user is not logged it sucks. When you are visiting Warid website most of the times your session id expire which takes you the home page again and finding that page I was browsing is hard to find. Site design is also poor with no cooperate look. Major draw back GPRS the slowest GPRS services I ever used the rates are touching the sky if you use GPRS more often than Warid is the company you waste money. The in house email server always lags and you never receive email upon requesting help center you came to know by the operator that email is send but never reached your mail box. The email send if used proper header never drops in you Bulk or Spam folder so what I can guess is that IT staff consists of immature worker that cant handle the huge requests nor designed a proper website. Warid to Warid call rates are cheap in night some times you will have network busy error other than that it works fine. Warid Telecom should look into the problems currently facing to capture more market as their calling rates are promising. Over all Warid Telecom still targeting student class improve services to reach business class.

GPRS Roaming FAQs Q) What is GPRS Roaming? A) GPRS is acronym for "General Packet Radio Service". Simply, GPRS is a way for transmitting data over a mobile phone. Besides access to Internet, GPRS supports access to the standard WAP. Now roaming subscribers can access their emails, play online games, exchange media-rich contents, and do so much more.
Q) Who can use GPRS Roaming? A) GPRS roaming is only available to our postpaid customers while they are on IR. You need to have a handset that supports GPRS, most of the widely available handsets in the market provide GPRS support. We suggest you get your GPRS settings configured and the service activated prior to departure (in case of roaming abroad). We also encourage you to test your GPRS handset before you leave Pakistan.
Q) How is GPRS charged? A: Charging is done on the basis of the quantity of transmitted data via GPRS, irrespective of the time the user spends online i.e. in blocks of data transmitted, e.g. 10KB, 30KB, 60KB, etc. The chargeable block varies from operator to operator and the cost of uplink (data uploaded) and downlink (data downloaded) can also be different for the same operator.
Q) Is MMS available while on IR? What is its charging principle? A) MMS can be sent and received if you have GPRS activated on IR. For availability of MMS in a particular country while roaming on a particular network operator, please consult the GPRS tariff guide. It is important to note that MMS is charged on the same principle of data quantity (and not on quantity of MMS sent/received); i.e. in blocks of data sent or received. And therefore, the cost of MMS is reflected in the GPRS tariffs. Q) What happens if one wants to answer a call while GPRS data transmission is in progress? A) A customer can answer the call and resume data transmission after the call has ended.
Q) Is a notebook computer necessary for beneficial use of the GPRS? A) No. For surfing WAP pages it is enough to have a GPRS handset only. The GPRS handset can also be used for connecting PC to Internet. The GPRS can be used for data synchronization, viewing of bank accounts and the use of e-mail services as well.

Wateen Telecom is the Abu Dhabi Group's latest communication investment in Pakistan. After the successful launch of Warid Telecom in Pakistan, which provides mobile GSM services to over 4 million customers in 100 cities, Wateen Telecom has been set up to become the leading "Carrier's Carrier" providing quality, reliability and affordability in the communication sector and bringing Next Generation services to your doorstep... today! About Warid Telecom Warid Telecom is owned by the Abu Dhabi Group led by His Highness Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan. The group is one of the largest in the Middle East and has diversified business interests ranging from oil and gas exploration, hospitality services, telecommunications, banking and financial services, automobile industries and property development. The group has a large presence in the Pakistani market and owns Bank Alfalah Ltd., the 5th largest and one of the country's premier consumer banks, as well as a substantial stake in United Bank Limited, the 3rd largest bank with substantial presence abroad. Warid Telecom has implemented a new and modern corporate identity as a result of the dynamic changes taking place in the telecom industry. With a reflection of a new strategy, our aim is to be perceived not only as a telecommunication operator of voice services, but also as a universal provider of comprehensive communications services for both residential and business customers. Warid's corporate identity seeks to reflect the changes in telecom sector in relation to helping customers keep pace with rapidly changing technology in the field of communication, and to harmonize the customers' perception of our brand with the quality and range of our services. Our objective is to provide optimum level of support and care through our highly skilled and motivated team of professionals and through maximum network coverage and clear connectivity that we have committed to provide.
Wateen Telecom (Pvt.) Limited Entity: A/A-2, Outlook: Stable JCR-VIS Assigns Initial Entity Ratings of A/A-2 to Wateen Telecom (Pvt.) Limited JCR-VIS Credit Rating Co. Ltd. (JCR-VIS) has assigned initial medium to long-term and short-term entity credit ratings of A (Single A) and A-2 (A Two) respectively to Wateen Telecom (Pvt.) Ltd (Wateen Telecom). The outlook on the medium to longterm rating is Stable. The ratings take into account the plans of Wateen Telecom to position itself as a fully-integrated provider of telecommunication services including long-haul and metropolitan area optic fiber cable , long-distance and international (LDI) connectivity and last mile solutions that will be primarily based on the fourthgeneration broadband telecommunication technology, WiMAX. The technology risk associated with the deployment of new technology has to quite an extent been mitigated by the guarantees acquired from the equipment vendors against performance of the supplied equipment, as well as the fact that in most cases the equipment vendors have also been given operation & maintenance contracts for their installed equipment. The nature of infrastructure of Wateen Telecom will allow it to target different market segments while enjoying high margins for its last-mile solutions. This market positioning has been further bolstered in the presence of captive business of Warid Telecom (Pvt.) Ltd (Warid Telecom) - a sister concern - for fiber optic and other infrastructure services. The track record of the management of the company is strong even in the brief history seen so far, with Wateen Telecom posting a reasonable profit in its full first year of operations, and healthy cash flows
during FY 2007 from existing operations which are set to go up substantially in 2H FY2007 following the commencement of operations of the own optic fiber network of the company. A key driver of the assigned ratings is the level of sponsor support JCR-VIS believes that Wateen Telecom has available keeping in view the significant investment of the sponsor group in Pakistan, particularly in the banking and telecommunication sector. Due consideration has also been given to the fact that Wateen Telecom, despite being a private limited concern, has in place strong governance, reporting and review structures. Wateen Telecom will face the risk of functioning in a highly deregulated sector where the level of competition in the voice and LDI segments is already very high and any other area which may be proven by one operator to have significant profitability potential (e.g. optic fiber) may attract fresh entrants quickly resulting in erosion of initial profitability levels. The other major risk factors to be considered will be the level of demand for WiMAX-based broadband solutions (data, internet and voice) in the target market of large to medium size corporates and high-end retail consumers and sustainable performance of Warid Telecom in the highly competitive cellular business. The management of Wateen Telecom has developed risk-mitigation strategies for all these areas, the effectiveness of which will be monitored by JCR-VIS over time.

Warid Telecom to launch services in Pakistan in 2005 first half Pakistan Times Business & Commerce Desk
ISLAMABAD: Chief Operating Officer of Warid Telecom, Hamid Farooq has said his group will launch its first phase in first half of 2005 with an investment of $ 140 million to $ 150 million to handle 1.5 million customers. In an interview with an Islamabad-based English Daily, Mr. Hamid Farooq, who is an MBA from Knightsbridge University, London Campus, Copenhagen, Denmark and having 10 years experience with Mobilink as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer said Pakistan has tremendous growth potential in telecom sector with great opportunities for investment in this growing lucrative industry. He said the low tele-density in Pakistan in comparison to other Asian economies, government policies and current leadership are other encouraging factors. Warid Telecom is owned by the Abu Dhabi Group which has recently been granted licence to launch its services in telecom sector in Pakistan. Following is the text of the interview: Q
: Ownership details of Warid Telecom?
H F: Warid Telecom is owned by the Abu Dhabi Group, which is led by His Highness Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan. Apart from having substantial shareholding in Bank Alfalah and United Bank Limited, Abu Dhabi Group also has other international investments in the Finance, Hospitality, Property, Oil exploration and supplies, and automobile related industries. Q: Why are the objectives of Abu Dhabi Group choosing Pakistan telecom sector for such a huge investment? H F: The tremendous growth potential and market dynamics of Pakistan Telecom sector and extensive development and privatization taking place with a lot of unmet demand in the telecom sector has given a chance to the group to invest in the lucrative industry. With a current population of 140 million, the outlook for the future, too, is bright. The group is already running two successful banking ventures in Pakistan. Q: What is the investment plans of Warid Telecom (after the US $ 291m license fee) in the coming five years? H F: Although the license fee cost went beyond anybody’s expectations and we have already paid US $ 145 million to the Government of Pakistan as fifty percent of US$291 million license fee. The remaining fifty percent is to be paid over the next 10 years, yet this would not affect our plan to invest in the network and other service facilities. For phase I we have plans to invest over US $ 150 million. This investment would help us launch our services in the desired manner. The amount will be consumed by IT, customer care, billing and other operational expenditures including setting up of offices etc. This brings our total initial investment to US $ 450 million. The low tele-density in Pakistan in comparison to other Asian economies and government policies and current leadership are other encouraging factors. Our group would even consider other potential areas of investment in Pakistan. Q: You view on the growing competition in the cellular industry? H F: All the players will be competing with one another each having its own strength and weaknesses. The market positioning will be extremely dynamic. Under these circumstances quality of service, marketing strategies, pricing, promotions and brand loyalties all will interplay and also have their individual impact. Collectively whoever masters this set of strategies and is able to develop a synergy will be our greatest competitor. In my opinion, the market is large enough for all of us to have our share and survive. Q: How many companies the Telecom market in Pakistan can take? H F: In my opinion, the market can take 4-5 operators. The reason for this is the potential that exists for growth. Pakistan has a very low tele density. With pricing coming down, affordability would go up. Also from a luxury item mobile have become a “need” and a “business tool”. Keeping the untapped population figures and economic factors in mind we believe that the number of the telecom companies is not very high, however if you only focus on the per capita income level, six operators do look as a high number especially when the PTA is also aggressively promoting WLL.
Q: How do you think the LDI and WLL licenses will be competing with cellular industry? H F: WLL is good when it comes to expanding the telephony services to the far-flung areas, where fixed telephony doesn’t exist. But WLL may pose a threat to cellular and fixed telephony operators operating in large cities and urban areas. We have also procured license for WLL in almost all the regions in the 3.5Ghz band, however the WLL operators are not expected to erode our business as the threat (if any) is not very significant. As wireless local loop offers limited mobility, so it can never be a substitute of a phone. Secondly, the availability of GSM handsets is far cheaper than the WLL handset in Pakistan. Despite that I personally think that the PTA should not have issued WLL licenses for mega cities and key urban areas as the objective of WLL is to expand telephone service to distant and far flung areas. Q: The deal signed with Ericsson- Pakistan, will there be any role of EricssonPakistan after the completion of project? H F: Warid Telecom plans to build a network to handle 1.5 million customers with an investment of US $140 million to US $ 150 million in the first phase of its launch. The signing ceremony finalizing the strategic alliance agreement held in Lahore recently is for Ericsson to provide Warid Telecom a complete “turnkey state of the art” GSM network solution, which encompasses the supply of core and Radio network equipment, network design, rollout as well as professional services like full operations and maintenance. The network will be GSM / GPRS based and its coverage build out will commence immediately. Q: Something about the Management’s past experience in Warid Telecom? About your personal profile? H F: In the field of telecommunications, Warid is a new entrant. However we have been able to attract rich human resource capital from Pakistan and abroad covering a broad spectrum of telcos both from the vendors and operators sides. Q: How do you see and what do you think about the future of telecom industry in Pakistan? H F: Telecom market is progressing forward with high pace towards more and more technologically enhanced solutions based upon NGN, 3G, UMTS, IP/MPLS, ATM etc., with data market to grow exponentially as compared to the voice market. In today’s market in our country, the primary need is basic voice telephony and SMS (Short Messaging Service). There is immense demand for this and a lot of potential is still there to be tapped. Q: Do you expect in the rise of the penetration of cell phone rate that is quite low about little less than 3%? H F: We find Telecom market in Pakistan vibrant and promising with modest and even estimates for foreign direct investment of several billion US $ in the next five years. Our vision is the penetration should rise from 3% to 18% in the next 5-6 years.
Q: Will Tariff be the only weapon for an operator to attract subscriber? H F: In my opinion, the market can easily take 4-5 operators. With pricing coming down, affordability would go up. Also from a luxury item mobile have become a “need” and a “business tool”. Apart from tariff good coverage and highest standards of quality will be the decisive factor to attract subscribers. Q: When is the expected launch time frame? H F: Warid telecom is expected to launch our services in the first half of 2005. Q: What would be the focus of Warid Quality/Coverage/ Services/Price? H F: Warid plans to follow the internationally recognized quality of service benchmarks in maintenance of its GSM network. The coverage will be definitely extensive and in line with our USO “Universal Service Obligations”. In terms of services we would like to maintain our edge in bringing the most advanced and innovative features to our valued customers and will maintain our edge in being the trendsetters. The price of the services will be determined by the market forces. Q: How could we develop the culture of infrastructure sharing? H F: The government has encouraged infrastructure sharing in the new telecom policy. In this spirit we did approach one or two existing operators to seek their input about this idea. However, they consider infrastructure sharing as a marketing advantage to their competitors, which they wouldn’t want to happen. This is understandable. I think once the new entrants launched and acquired reasonable level of infrastructure ability and subscriber base, operators will consider infrastructure sharing on commercial terms. Sharing is also good for environment. Why should we have towers emerging from rooftops everywhere in the city while one tower could be enough for 3-4 operators.●

Market Share:
Mobilink, the Pakistani unit of Egypt-based telecom company Orascom. It has been in Pakistan since 1994. With 19.2 million subscribers it has the largest market share. Its shares are listed on the Egyptian and London stock markets as GDRs. My next post will focus entirely on Orascom and its performance. Ufone, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pakistan Telecommunication Co. Ltd (PTCL), is now under the control of Etisalat group of UAE. With 8.4 million subscribers it is the runner up. For those in Pakistan it is the one company where they can easily invest locally. Warid, owned by the Abu Dhabi group of the United Arab Emirates and sister of Wateen group is number 3 with 5.6 million subscribers, that is 14% market of subscribers.
Norway’s Telenor, a recent entrant with about a billion US dollar invesment in Pakistan has been doing well, based on its recent earning report. It has about 4.26 million subscribers or 11% of the market. Telenor stock is listed in the Oslo stock market (TEL) and Nasdaq NY (TELN). Paketl is owned by Millicom International Cellular (listed in Nasdaq as MIC). It has 1% of the subscriber share in Pakistan. Total Telecom in July 2006 acquired Instaphone - a cellular business of Luxembourg’s Millicom, in the first ever sale of a mobile business in Pakistan by a foreign company. It has 0.3 million subscribers.
Competitive Analysis This is a snapshot of mobile industry's growth in Pakistan in year 2006. By many measures 2006 was an amazing year for Pakistan's mobile companies. The total subscribers reached 48.2 million, translating to mobile density of 31%. Two new companies - Warid and Telenor - entered the mobile marketplace and the increased competition from them spurred growth in Pakistan's mobile sector. Ufone and Mobilink announced major network investment plans..wordpress.com/2006/11/17/competitive-trends-mobile-phoneadvertisements/">Marketing campaigns were at the centre of Pakistan's mobile growth. And most recently the uncertainty about future of Paktel ended with China Mobile buying it
Government regulators at PTA must be pleasantly surprised by all this growth in 2006 but they have a lot more to take care of in 2007. One important upcoming change is the much anticipated, but delayed, mobile number portability implementation.
Mobilink leads with over 22 million customers but its market share has declined to 46%. Ufone is next with over 10 million customers. Warid has over 7.6 million and Telenor about 6.6 million. Paktel has 1.3 million customers and Instaphone has only 0.25 million customers
According to some analysts Pakistan is likely join the small group of countries with over 100 million mobile subscribers during the second half of 2008, and that by the end of 2010, there could be over 120 million cellular customers in PakistanLets hope that this growth does not come at the cost of quality or service
What appears even more disturbing for Warid is the huge financial roll out of its sister company Wateen in projects whose financial plans seem dubious. Wateen is laying out a fiber backbone at a cost of $100 mn (the fourth company to doo). In order to create more hype, Wateen is acquiring 3.5 ghz of wireless frequency for launching Wimax broadband (a futurist technology with limited use in Pakistan). The Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) of Wimax is not yet institutionalized and does not as yet have wide scale deployment in developed economies. The CPE of Wimax is not rationalized and is far too expensive for Pakistan, which already has plenty of broadband access through e-video (CDMA), internet over cable and DSL. Wateen is also trying fiber connectivity to the last mile.
They are dabbling in hybrid fiber coaxial networks to provide triple play (a complex technology) of which they have no experience. Recently they bid unsuccessfully in Islamabad for a 200 km core fiber network which has been awarded to a competitor, Worldcall Telecom. In the emerging scenario, it seems the Wateen / Warid management is in danger of losing its direction. Having paid $290 mn for a mobile license and still unable to get market share they have abandoned their core business. Excess capacity and confused objectives are a recipe for disaster, says one analyst. When the market consolidates, three clear players will emerge. Instaphone are at the bottom of the league and may end up looking for a buyout as they do not have the money for rollout or the mobile license fees. Paktel, after the failure of its owner company Milicom to find a buyer, also looks destined to fight for survival. Warid and Wateen are up to their necks in red ink and it is a matter of time before the Sheikhs of Abu Dhabi realize their local management is a disaster. Three clear leaders – Telenor, Ufone and Mobilink will survive and it will be interesting to see the strategies they deploy in the fight for number one position. Who will be No 1 in telecoms? By Sharif Ahmad, News Analysis, Daily Times 29th August, 2006 [Actual Clip here] KARACHI: The major mobile operators are aggressively fighting for market share with every day bringing a bewildering new set of ‘packages’ and ‘offers’ to confused potontial consumers. But two things are clearly emerging from this chaos - the consumer is a major beneficiary, and connectivity is progressing at a breakneck speed. The clear market leader is Mobilink followed by Ufone, Telenor, Warid, Paktel and Instaphone. Among these, Warid Telecom has launched a media campaign offering rates that are aimed at creating a new price war in the industry. Desperate to create an impact, Warid seems to be a victim of its own hype. It has a relative poor quality of service and has slipped behind Mobilink, Ufone and Telenor. After the new $600 million expansion of Ufone awarded to Huawei, it is clear that PTCL is throwing its full weight behind its mobile subsidiary. Warid has the lowest arpu (average per unit) among the mobile leaders t under $4 and a bare 5 per cent of the market. Mobilink has 63 percent, Ufone 25 percent with Telenor at 7 percent. Mobilink is fueled by vibrant marketing and a first mover advantage and is therefore way ahead of the pack. Telenor is not to be taken lightly. It is building a stable and reliable network that should take it to second position over the next six months. Its new campaign “Talkshawk” has caught on. Telenor has the advantage of being equity financed while Warid has borrowed up to the hilt.
