International Seminar on SMALL ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT Background Ever since E.F. Schumacher eulogized Small is beautiful schoae engine of economic growth, the incubator of innovation, and the solution of decades of persistent unemployment. Virtually no matter how they are defined, small enterprises constitute the major chunk of all enterprises even in the European Community. Small enterprises are mainly responsible for the economic growth of a country because of its ability to bring about innovation, attract wide spread participation and its huge number impacting on the overall economy of a nation. In Bangladesh as well small enterprises a play an important role in our economy. Much of the government and NGO led development focus have centered on the small enterprises. Policy makers in our country are aware of the importance of small and medium-sized enterprises in the area of innovation and in promoting economic growth.. In the face of widespread dominance of established large companies it is the small enterprises that provide some competition and bring about early exploitation and development of radical new technologies. In view of the above the main focus of the seminar is to develop an understanding about the SEs and seek ways to develop them particularly in the context of Bangladesh. Objectives

To draw internationally reputed scholars to deliberate on the ways to develop small enterprises To make an inventory of current global knowledge on small enterprises and seek out a new model for development To draw on the experience of other countries and relook at the problems faced by the Bangladeshi small enterprises to obtain solutions. To offer an Integrated Functional Model that could be used as a guiding principle for national industrial development program; To establish and nurture a spin-off organization or Business Incubator on the basis of conceptual Model developed through research To design a course on small business/enterprises development for the Faculty of Business Administration of AIUB

Schedule The seminar will use one inaugural session and two business sessions having a 20 minutes break after the inaugural session. The inaugural session will start at 9.00 am and continue for on hour and after a tea break of twenty minutes first business session will start at 10.20 am to be continued till 12.00 noon. The final business session will start at 12.00 noon and continue till 1.30 pm. The program will be rounded off by a lunch for the speakers and the participants. Target Participant A mix of academicians, policy planners, donors and donor agencies, NGOs and relevant others are invited to attend the seminar.
