March at AID Delhi has always been eventful. We are ending this financial year 08 – 09 with an eventful note. Happy to make you all read me through newsletter again. This edition of newsletter would provide you varieties with the main issue focused on Genetically Modified Foods. Education has always been the frontline activity of AID NCR and this episode of the newsletter brings you results updates from various projects. We also had a workshop on politics of development for a set of active volunteers which was mainly focused on to encourage volunteers think and question whatever they do / see around. There was a volunteer orientation session at Parichay which provided great insight to all the volunteers who attended it. I would like to focus the editorial on the issue of Genetically Modified Food. One can ask there are millions of issues available and why GM foods? Food is something which is common in all of us and we all could relate it to without which survival would be impossible. The varieties and diversity of food and its making is celebrated everywhere in India. There are two kinds of people who look food on different perspective. One is the producer, who feed the world along with earning bread and butter for him / her and the other is the consumer. As a consumer, whenever and wherever we’ve got our food we believe that the food we eat is safe and does not create any health hazard, but with introduction of GM foods researchers state that the health and side effects would increase tremendously. Apart from all these the introduction of GM foods would kill all the traditional diversity which existed in the food and in fact would spoil the ecology. The worst part of the entire issue is above 80% of educated people in Delhi doesn’t know what GM food is. As a consume we pay money for any material we buy and we ask for warranty, replacement et al., but in case of our food we are not aware of what we eat and almost 95% of doesn’t know where our food comes from and how it was processed. As a tax payer we have every right to know how and where the food is coming from. Once we start to think about that we might certainly think of finding out what is best for us and what is not.

If you are willing to help us spread awareness about the project around your area (North Delhi) then do get in touch with us.

Bt-brinjal would be first variety of GM food which is targeted to be launched in India. A GM-free coalition which includes farmers association across the country is working to stop the entrance of Bt-brinjal into the market. AID Delhi is also a part of the coalition and is helping in all possible terms in awareness creation among the consumers etc.,. As a citizen you should also step forward and question the government / write to them to stop such things entering into market.

And now, we stand at another pinnacle of achievements at Prayas. We can now boast of proud new set of inspiring, motivated and affirmative individuals – Charu, Sugandha, Nikunj, Rajiv, Tarun; who have made this day a reality. Charu, Nikunj & Tarun have successfully managed a bunch of 4-7 year olds that spread mayhem in the class as they entered. Rajiv & Sugandha then had to use their diligence and a sustained attack on their patience to manage the next set of 7+ year olds. Hats of to them!

Project Location: Gurgaon Sec 31, Jharsa Village Regular Class timings: 10.00 hours – 13.30 hours

With the help of veteran volunteers at AID NOIDA like Darshan, Kannan & Vikas’s directions and support these volunteers, today there is hope of brighter days at Prayas. A few other valuable volunteers of mention, who are also to be noted for their long standing efforts in this endeavor are – Anuradha, Raj, Anand, Prasad & Rajat. To sign off I would like to keep my fingers crossed and hope by the time you are reading this we already have some good news to party about.

Project Updates: AID Prayas This March was the final lap of the year long sprint to get 20 plus children whom we have been preparing for the Nai Disha entrance tests. As I am writing this on the 31st of March 2009, a jittery and anxious set of volunteer-teachers go to sleep. Now as they sleep, the last thought that runs through their minds is - what would be the result of the next two days of entrance sessions the children are to attend.

Regular Classes: Pioneer – Tuesday, Thrusday 20.30 hours – 22.30 hours Eureka – Tuesday, Thrusday and Saturday 18.00 hours to 20.00 hours. Class – II – Monday, Wednesday and Friday – 20.30 hours to 22.30 hours and Saturday and Sunday 16.00 hours – 18.00 hours.

The preparation towards the vision of building on last year’s success of Sona, Suby, Sabreen, Zulekha & Sajjad successfully getting into Nai Disha, wraps in two days time. The 1st and 2nd of April will see the 25 odd children appearing for the tests. This time with a difference though. Most of the children’s parents will also be joining them along with the volunteer-teachers to the session.

Regular Volunteers Darshan, Kannan, Rajat, Anand, Rajiv, Sugandha, Charu, Nikunj, Arun, Raj, Tarun, Priyanka, Vikas, Poonam, Aakanksha, Sonia, Sonika Special mention Abhinash (Full timer) Contact: Arun: 099109-08774 Rajiv: 098119-81809

The resilience of Darshan, Kannan & Vikas towards ensuring the admissions of the first batch of 5 children cannot be overlooked as we approach this milestone. If it was not for their perseverance and astute work with the children then this day would still have been a distant dream. I salute them, along with many

Project Updates: AID Jaagriti

Project Updates: Jamghat

1. We have finally started with a full-time center with a regular teacher. Classes have been going on well and children have developed an interest in learning.

In the month of March 3 children from Jamghat’s Ladoo Sarai center moved to Indore where they got job in a hotel. All the three boys are above 18 years. We also had a night walk with around 30 volunteers from different companies. A volunteer who attended the nightwalk gave his feed back as follows. 1. Firstly, it was a nightwalk that each member had thoroughly enjoyed as they were able to relate to most of the things they were exposed to. 2. Unanimously each member lauds your effort and dedication in this noble cause and would like to participate and / or help you in future to do more for the people living in streets. 3. Every member really liked the way your team explained each and every detail. They even loved interacting every volunteer of Jamghat.

2. A lot of improvement has been observed in the writing and learning habits of the children. Many of the children have full attendance at the classes and are also completing their work regularly. The Level 1 children who had never been too school have also shown great improvement and are able to write well now. 3. A Drawing Competition was also organized and we were surprised to see many artists emerge at Jaagriti. We will be trying our best to hone this talent of the children and take it further. Activities for next month: 1. We plan to regularly monitor the progress of each child individually and will be preparing a regular progress report for each child in terms of his attendance and improvement in studies. 2. Since we have now started with a full-time center, we need to work out funding sources for Jaagriti.

Outdoor children from Jamma Masjid center went to a one day event held at British high commission which was a happy day celebration of a company named Group 4. Around 45 children from Jamma masjid center participated in the event.4 children from Jamghat have gone to Yamuna Yatra which is organized by Swechha from 23rd March – 3rd April. The children are from both centers. 5 new children have joined Jamghat shelter home at Ladoo sarai centre.

3. Some students are expected to get admitted in nearby school subject to completion of all formalities. 4. Work out the possibility of starting a nutrition drive at Jaagriti.

Her father and two of her aunts who stay here in India will also visit the centre. 5. Anirban networked with a good number of people this month to organize an orientation program for old and new volunteers at Parichay. Fourteen people registered their participation in the event. Ladies of Swayamsiddha group cooked delicious lunch for the event. 6. On 31st March Vijay Bhaiya and Anirban visited Manav Rachna Educational Institute, Faridabad where an educational program for the children of construction workers has been initiated by few students including Chirag. Project Updates : TARA

Life would always be busy. So by the end of the call I had made up my mind to go ahead and enlist.

Activity Updates: Regular classes at TARA. TARA now has two more locations as the community have moved out of the place they were earlier sheltered. One of the TARA center is located at ITO and the other at Naraina. We are looking forward for volunteers to teach children in these locations. Children received their annual report cards on 31st of March. Ramphal stood third in class. Ret of the children have also scored good marks and have moved on to the next class.

Initially I was excited about the project because I always liked teaching and somehow I believed that I could be a better teacher than any of the people whom I had seen doing this job. So with all this excitement I reached for the first day of action and what I experienced next almost threw me off my feet. Over thirty five kids shouting & grabbing me from all sides and I realized this was not going to be easy & it certainly wasn’t.

Events planned in next month: Various workshops on knitting, sculpting, at work, etc.

In my next couple of meetings with Anchit & Kunal(founders of JAAGRITI) we discussed various plans about what & how to teach these kids. Our idea was simple - to provide them an atmosphere where they learn, create, think, stay healthy & evolve. We were quite cautious as one thing was sure these kids were highly motivated to learn and any mistake could lead to a drop in this motivation. In the midst of all this planning I had a spark of realization which compelled me to respect, rather praise, the education system in India, something that I have been criticizing all my life. I mean it was proving so difficult for us to structure a basic course for these young minds- A,B,C,D;1,2,3 , etc- and somebody has put together the whole education system in India which benefits millions of kids every year- the whole idea seemed mind boggling!!! Learning subjects from all disciplines of life ranging from science to arts, I wondered what could have motivated them to design an education system of this kind. And it was than that I comprehended that all the exams we gave were not important, I mean it was not about getting marks, what was important was what we learnt when we studied for those exams. We were given an opportunity, in our formative years to groom ourselves, so that we become fruitful for others, even as we progressed. Kids are POTENTIAL. They are the seeds we sow today the fruits of which will be reaped by society tomorrow. Human beings are such that if their thinking is nurtured then they can be very constructive, but if ignored, they could walk on the path leading to our destruction. Let us not allow these poor kids to bring such devastation. Let us give them an opportunity to showcase their ability too.

Special Needs/ Issues: volunteers for new project starting in July 2009. Project Location: Jamia Millia Islamia Regular Class timings: 1pm to 5pm (Everyday) Regular volunteers: 1. Kulsoom Rashid 2. Article : Experiencing Jaagriti - Abhishek One morning when I was in college busy in my own world, I got a call from an unknown number. On answering the call I heard a young voice offering me a chance to join an initiative to teach poor & underprivileged kids on weekends; he asked me for my e-mail id so he could send me details of this project – JAAGRITI. While speaking to him, I first thought of refusing as my exams were around the corner but than I realized that it was now or ever. 6

After just a few days since I have become a part project JAAGRITI I see that it’s not only the kids who have learnt something but it’s also us who have learnt a lot- perhaps more than those kids. Someone has very aptly said “true learning comes only when you teach”. This project will result not only in our student’s awakening but our own JAAGRITI too.

Volunteer Speak – Neeru Malhotra I started volunteering with AID to be precise from 10th February 2008 and till date it has been an awesome experience, something worth being shared with everyone. For me volunteering was a way, to pass the ample amount of time that I had. During the initial months it felt really nice finally be able to volunteer, everything looked perfect, but then after sometime it's natural to start having your doubts, feeling that maybe what you are doing is pointless, and then in almost every situation one seems to back out and be happy with doing their bit and thus tend to be satisfied by their short stint of volunteering. Something similar happened with me, just that I happened to attend an Operational Revenue Meet just when I was in my phase of doubts and dilly daling whether to continue or not. There I happened to meet some amazing people, heard experiences, got to know about the working of AID and that was the day I decided that I am going to stay. I took it up as a challenge for myself and came to realize that not always in life do you need to do something concrete, not always do you need to do things according to what is expected from you, there are somethings that you need to do because you need to do it.. simple.. no complications involved :) On a little serious note, you need to do certain things because not always in life will you get a chance to do something so selflessly, to prove yourself, to do somethings where you won't be judged and last but not the least to do your duty. Volunteering provided me with a platform to meet new people, have a new outlook towards things, create opportunities for myself and others and most importantly whether directly or indirectly you do end up as a changed person and trust me on this.. Change is always for good! Happy Volunteering Neeru Malhotra [email protected]
