ADSL Configuration ADSL is generally another method to connect customers to the Internet but over considerably higher speed rates than can be achieved by 56k dialup modems. A typical setup involves the user ADSL modem and the PC.
A standard modem setup. The modem connects to the Internet via your POTS line. Rj11 The PC connects to the Internet via the ADSL modem directly via a USB cable, Ethernet cable or over a wireless connection (802.11/a/b/). The PC can also be connected through a hub or switch to facilitate adding multiple computers to the internet.
When modem connects successfully to the internet your internet browsing should seem seamless. Otherwise they may be a few problem areas that would need to be resolved.
Problem Area 1 Symptom : 1 Flashing line sync light or no DSL light. Solution: Try new phone socket with out the use of the ADSL filters provided Reason: phone socket bad or other devices hindering DSL signal Example fax or cordless phone. Avoid using long extension telephone cords as they increase line resistance weakening DSL signal or filter plugged in incorrectly. Modem bad or faulty due to power surge over phone line. In this case modem should be brought in to be tested. Your line sync may be down from the exchanges cross connect between the patch panel and DSLAM. Call 611 to make a fault report.
Symptom: 2 Cannot browse even though you have line sync Solution: Verify all modem configurations for your line, Username/password line protocol/encapsulation and vpi/vci. For PPPoE (VPI =0) (VCI=36) Encapsulation =LLC For PPPoA (VPI =0) (VCI=35) Encapsulation =LLC/VCMUX Determine from your ISP and or C&W (611) what your setting should be. The circuit has not been setup correct at the C&W DSLAM. (PPPoA) Configuring your computer for ADSL Verify that your Ethernet cable is plugged in and your Ethernet device is active and enabled. Invalid route setup on your PC. Setup your Ethernet card to do DHCP(your PC is configured to receive an IP address from the modem). Release and renew your Ethernet cards interface( start- run-CMD the type ipconfig /release,then type ipconfig /renew). DHCP errors need to be resolved. These occur when you have limited connectivity, faulty networkcard, bad cable or modem ports faulty. Note: If all the above fail you need to replace the modem. An ADSL modem WIFI Access point setup.
The setup is very much the same as above with the additional Access Point providing wireless connectivity to clients. Please note that the phone in the illustration is connected to the low pass filter and that the ADSL modem goes directly to the wall socket via the phone splitter / duplex jack. Please ensure that the ADSL modem is not attached after the low pass filter, it will not function. Note: Most ADSL manufacturers are also providing an all in one solution for ADSL and Wifi combinations.
