ADJECTIVE

• A word that qualifies a noun / pronoun is called Adjectives. • A word which tells something extra about a noun / pronoun. • A word which modifies a noun / pronoun is called an Adjectives. • A word used with a noun to describe or point out , the person, animal, place or thing which the noun names or to tell the number or quality of a noun / pronoun is called an Adjective.

Kinds of Adjectives According to the usage of an adjective in a sentence, it is classified into two main categories. 1) Attributive Adjective. 2) Predicative Adjective.  The fierce revolution caused many dramatic changes. When an Adjective is used along with the noun it will be known as Attributive Adjective. She is afraid of ghosts. When an Adjective is used after the noun and in the predicate section of sentence, it will be known as Predicative Adjective. 

According to the meaning of an Adjective, it is classified into following different types. •

Adjectives of quality / Descriptive Adjectives / Proper Adjectives . e.g. honest, foolish, Turkish, brave etc

Adjective of quantity. e.g. some, much, little, enough, any etc.

•

Adjectives of number / Numeral Adjectives. e.g. one, dozen, few, some, any etc.

 Definite Numeral Adjectives. e.g. one, two, three, dozen etc.  Indefinite Numeral Adjectives. e.g. some, certain, several, any etc.  Distributive Numeral Adjectives e.g. each, every, either, neither etc.

POINTS TO REMEMBER •

Possessive pronouns like my, his which is proceeded by a noun it can also be known as possessive Adjectives. e.g. I have lost my pen.

Articles i.e. a, an and the can also be termed as Adjectives. e.g. A dove glided over the orange tree.

Adjectives formed from proper nouns can also called as proper Adjectives. e.g. European powers expanded their influence in the seventeenth century.

When an interrogative pronoun is proceeded by a noun / pronoun it will be called interrogative Adjective. e.g. Whose book is this?

When a distributive pronoun is proceeded by a noun it can also be known as distributive adjective. e.g. Each boy must take his turn.

•

When a demonstrative pronoun is proceeded by a noun it can also be called as demonstrative adjective. e.g. These mangoes are sour.

•

When adjectives like some, no, all, certain etc will be used with a countable noun it will be known as adjective of number but the these adjectives will be used with uncountable noun it will be known as adjective of quantity. e.g. “I ate some rice”. “Some boys are clever”.

Degrees of Adjectives

There are three degrees of adjectives. 1) Positive Degree. 2) Comparative Degree. 3) Superlative Degree.
