Obituary of Addie Bundren by Anse Bundren
Although Mrs. Bundren has not deceased, I have been forced to narrate her life regardless of whether or not I sweat in the process. That durn woman… the love of my life. She had to go waste my time by forcing me to bury her corpse in Jefferson. At least I was able to get me a new pair of teeth in the process, which I am sure will get her to love me back. Anyway, Addie was a true woman; before I met her, she was a school teacher for several years. Once we became married, we had five children-- four boys and one girl. If it weren’t for me, she would still be a miserable school teacher. Now, we live on a farm raising our five children together. I’ve been told that it’s selfish to state that Mrs. Bundren is not deceased, but they do not realize how much work I did in the past few days. Getting new teeth, finding Mrs. Bundren, burying Addie’s corpse-- it’s a blessing that I did not sweat during these past few days. Finally, I can relax with Mrs. Bundren and my children at home while not worrying about the prospect of sweating. Maybe that’s why Addie passed. She worked so hard to create this family that it became her bane in the end. She should know that caring for others brings you nowhere in life. She should have followed my example. Oh well. Now what to do with these ten dollars...
