DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION Region V Division of Camarines Sur Nabua National High School Nabua, Camarines Sur Project BAYAN: Bringing Awareness to Young Advocates of Nationalism
I. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE The Philippine National Anthem is the symbol of our nation and the witness to every Filipino's independence. A country’s synopsis of gallantry and independence is clearly depicted in its national anthem. The national anthem of a sovereign state or nation is simply described in general, as a nationalistic musical composition which basically chronicles the history, long struggles and colorful traditions of its beloved people. In addition, a national hymn is properly recognized by law, its government, or a certain convention mandating its official use by the natural born citizens of a given country. Similarly, almost all of the national hymns were either written in melodic and rhythmic styles of marches. The Philippine Law has mandated that the Philippine National Anthem must always be sang, according to the musical arrangement and composition of its original composer. But sad to say, its ancient holograph was nowhere to be found. Therefore, the time signature of Lupang Hinirang was changed to 4/4 to make the singing of the national anthem livelier and more meaningful at the same time. Nabua National High School (NNHS), formerly known Nabua High School, is one of the oldest yet the largest secondary school here in Camarines Sur. It implements a K-12 basic education program that offers Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) strand, Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) strand, Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) and General Academic Strand (GAS) strand as well as Technical Vocational Livelihood (TVL) track. As of now, there are still many students who lack respect and do not give much attention about the nationalism. While attending the flag ceremony inside and outside the school, people still walking and chatting around are observed in some areas. Some causes of these scenarios are lack of knowledge and interest about the national symbols of the Philippines. It may also be because the students do not understand the teachings on different

However, they must not limit their knowledge to their own country but they should also try to spread their wings, so to speak, by being aware of other countries’ national symbols. It is always fascinating to know what other countries have to offer in terms of their culture and way of life. These happenings are still observed in Nabua National High School. Within these matters, the action researchers are planning to advocate the young students in NNHS by proposing different strategies and interventions. The purpose of this action research is to bring awareness to young students that having to know the Philippine National Anthem is a great achievement and can make a person proud. By knowing the proficiency level of the students in NNHS, the teachers and other faculty members will know what to improve and innovate in their normal way of teaching. The Department of Education has mandates all school officials to ensure that all students should memorize the lines and know the proper way of singing the Philippine National Anthem. This premise is based from the DO 50, S. 2015 pursuant to Section 18 of RA No. 8491, otherwise known as the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines. Through this, it is inculcating to young minds the value of patriotism at its simplest form through proper singing and memorization of Lupang Hinirang. The playing of the national hymn is prohibited in concern for entertainment or recreation. It is imperative to gauge how well a student performs in a manner of memory, as to knowing the lyrics of the Philippine National Anthem. The proper delivery and singing ability is also measured. A student learns the song at the very beginning of his/her student life. It is taught in primary years and familiarization the lines of the song are learned over time. The process of repetition and constant practice makes memorization easy. It is important to dwell on determining the abilities of the students in singing the Philippine National Anthem. Aside from the fact that they are in school half of almost half of their lives, they must not be satisfied on their level in singing the national hymn of the Philippines. Every Filipino citizen

School in singing the Philippine National Anthem. Specifically, it will seek to answer the following questions: 1. What are the levels of proficiency in singing the Philippine National Anthem of the students in Nabua National High School in terms of: a. Lyrics b. Tone c. Recitation 2. What are the performance level of the students in Nabua National High School? 3. What are the factors affecting the knowledge of the students about the Philippine National Anthem? 4. What is the effect of the interventions and strategies implemented for the improvement of the student’s proficiency level?

Performance monitoring will be done showing the competency-base mastery of the students in singing the Philippine National Anthem. The result of this monitoring will be posted in the bulletin board, for the students to know the result of their performance.
B. Mistake proofing – The students will be monitored while singing the Philippine National Anthem during flag ceremonies. The purpose of this is to lessen the error committed by students while singing the Lupang Hinirang. They are expected to sing while the right palm is placed over the left chest and are singing in a proper way as a sign of respect.
C. Direct involvement of the student and teachers in the assessment – Students and teachers will be involved in planning, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of the assessment and assessment results. 1. Feel the Beat! a. During MAPEH periods, students will be taught on how to beat the Philippine National Anthem by their respective teachers so that during flag ceremonies, they will be the one to conduct during flag ceremonies or inside their classrooms. Every day, the performance of the students will be recorded and tabulated to know how much they improved by doing the tasks that was given to them by their MAPEH teachers. 2. Flag Week a. ACTION RESEARCH METHOD This action research will use the descriptive method of research in satisfying the responses for the four action research questions in forms such as: a] determine the levels of proficiency of the students of Nabua National High School in singing the Philippine National Anthem; b] determine the performance level of the students of Nabua National High School regarding the Philippine National Anthem; c] identify the factors affecting the knowledge of the students about the Philippine National Anthem; d] enumerate the effects of the interventions and strategies implemented for the improvement. a. Participants and/or Other Sources of Data and Information- participants will be the 66 students of Grade 10- Bluebird of Nabua National High School schoolyear 2018-2019. Other source of information will be the Social Studies and Music teachers’ observation during their respective times. b. Data Gathering Methods- the methods will vary in the action research question or objectives. For objective number 1 on determining the levels of proficiency of the students on Nabua National High School in singing the Philippine National Anthem, parts of triangulation method will be used: questionnaire, interview and observation. The result from objective number 2 will be based from the results in objective number 1. On matters pertaining the objective number 3 in determining the factors affecting the students about the Philippine National Anthem, the observed doings of the students will be tabulated and recorded. For objective number 4, enumerating the effects of interventions and strategies implemented for the improvement, c. Data Analysis Plan- likewise varies from one objective to another.
