From Eden to the New Jerusalem An Introduction to Biblical Theology T. Desmond Alexander Personal stories aren’t enough to offer individuals peace when they question their own existence. But the Bible’s story comes not from humanity, but from God. T. Desmond Alexander, suggests that God has given us the reasons for creation and our existence in the Bible “by resolving an intricate plot that sheds light on the entire story.” Using this theory to start from the denouement, or resolution, in Revelation’s last verses and work backward, Alexander pieces together the Bible’s overarching plot. The resulting picture reveals the reasons for creation and life that have eluded those who seek to answer life’s biggest questions without first placing themselves in God’s story.

H andbooks for Old Testament Exegesis Interpreting the Pentateuch An Exegetical Handbook Peter T. Vogt, Edited by David M. Howard In this latest addition to the Handbooks for Old Testament Exegesis series, Peter T. Vogt continues the tradition of excellence established by previous volumes. Divided into three parts, Interpreting the Pentateuch first provides an overview of the major themes of the Pentateuch. In the second part, Vogt offers resources and strategies for interpreting and understanding the first five books of the Bible by exploring its genres—law and narrative. Finally, Vogt shows that, although the Pentateuch is a collection of ancient texts, it still has contemporary significance. Vogt also includes two samples—one from law and one from narrative—of exegesis, giving students a start-to-finish example of the techniques he has illustrated for effective exegesis.

A Not-So-Silent Night The Unheard Story of Christmas and Why It Matters Verlyn D. Verbrugge Christmas is a time for peace on earth, a time for favorite carols, family dinners, and familiar traditions. It’s about a beautiful story of a lovely babe in the manger. Or is it?   A Not-So-Silent Night is a revolutionary book that reveals the darker side of Christmas, a side that exposes pain, humiliation, fear, and danger. Though we usually choose to ignore them, these elements—in their cultural and historical context—reveal the true meaning of Christmas where the shadow of the cross is inseparable from the manger. Author Verlyn D. Verbrugge maintains that until we see the dark side of Christmas, until we shed tears with Mary and Joseph, until we experience the fear that war is on the horizon, we will never truly understand the awesomeness of what happened in that little town of Bethlehem. Timely and provocative, A Not-So-Silent Night is perfect for pastors looking for a new approach to their traditional Christmas sermons and for anyone who wants to get past holiday commercialization and get back to the reason for the season.

Reading Revelation A Comparison of Four Interpretive Translations of the Apocalypse C. Marvin Pate The mark of the Beast, the Antichrist, the seven seals, the second coming of Christ, the millennium. These intriguing and endlessly contentious ideas and images all come together in the book of Revelation, a rich and hermeneutically complicated Scripture that, unsurprisingly, has no universally accepted interpretation. Instead, the study of Revelation has customarily fallen into four major—and essentially conflicting—hermeneutical approaches: preterist (past), historicist, futurist, and idealist (spiritual). Reading Revelation compares these four major approaches to Revelation by laying out the different interpretive translations provided by each school of thought in parallel columns and—in order to provide a standard of reference—includes a fifth column presenting the Greek text and a literal word-forword translation.

Evans Beginning with the spread of Jesus’ teachings and the apostles’ ministry throughout the Roman world, G. R. Evans shows how Christianity transformed not only the thinking but also the social structures of Europe. In The History of Christian Europe, Evans traces Christianity’s influence across the centuries, from its earliest days, through the East/West schism, Reformation, and Counter-Reformation, to its development in the scientific age of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and its place in the modern world. The narrative is complemented by sidebars highlighting key events and concepts, such as monastic life, icons, Darwin’s The Origin of Species, prophecy, the slave trade, and the influence of psychology.

How Then Should We Choose? Three Views on God’s Will and Decision Making Douglas S. Huffman The three-views approach is an effective and succinct means of introducing theological subjects to readers of all levels. How Then Should We Choose? applies this proven format to the vital topic of decision making and the Christian’s search for the will of God. Garry Friesen of Multnomah Bible College, Henry and Richard Blackaby of Blackaby Ministries International, and Gordon T. Smith of Regent College each summarize their perspectives on God’s will and their resulting approaches to decision making. Friesen discusses the “wisdom” view, Henry and Richard Blackaby delineate the “specific will” view, and Smith champions the “relationship” view of God’s will. In an effort to make this discussion reader friendly, the contributors have applied their beliefs regarding God’s will and decision making to three practical, concrete topics: career, relationships, and stewardship. Using three hypothetical stories, the authors illustrate how their respective views would influence decisions in these common areas of concern.

This chronological and lavishly illustrated survey book tells the history of Christian art, delving into the purpose behind the masterpieces and looking at the context in which they were created. The modern reader who feels detached from the meaning of the paintings will find help in understanding their emotional as well as their aesthetic power, and the Christian reader will be encouraged to appreciate the wonder and beauty of the Christian cultural legacy.

The Lion Companion to Church Architecture David Stancliffe For centuries, churches have been a key part of the landscape of the world. In this lavishly illustrated book, David Stancliffe takes us back to the earliest churches, showing how they were conceived as spaces for worship. We see their historical development from the early Roman house churches, through Byzantine and Romanesque and on to Gothic. With the Reformation came significant change in the religious landscape; Stancliffe describes these changes and explores the journey to the modern understanding of church architecture.

Why Elders? A Biblical and Practical Guide for Church Members Benjamin L. Merkle Most works on elders are written for the pastor or church leader, but this volume speaks directly to the church member. Benjamin L. Merkle grounds this study about church elders in the Word of God as he clearly and succinctly informs laypeople of the scriptural qualifications and responsibilities of elders and deacons. Then he implores lay men and women to vote wisely concerning church leadership. Why Elders? assumes the voice of the curious church member who reads the Bible with an eye focused on the early church’s organizational structure and asks, “Why did they do it the way they did?” and “How can we follow Scripture’s prescription for leadership?”

Wise Stewards Philosophical Foundations of Christian Parenting Michael Austin A philosophical foundation may be the last thing that parents think about in the middle of the day-to-day commotion of childrearing. But, as Michael Austin demonstrates, a philosophical understanding of parenting is not only vital, it’s also practical. In this insightful resource, Austin argues that wise parents should view themselves as stewards of their children, and with this mind-set they can gain a new understanding of the family.   Wise Stewards combines biblical, theological, and philosophical reflection to construct an everyday ethic and practice of parenthood that is distinctly Christian. Addressing practical concerns such as how family members should relate to one another, how they should conceive of their roles, and how they should carry out their tasks, Austin helps parents apply these core ideas to their daily lives. Filling a noticeable gap in parenting literature, Wise Stewards brings the methods and insights of Christian philosophy to bear on the family in a way that is accessible, theoretically sound, and intensely practical.

Applying the Sermon How to Balance Biblical Integrity and Cultural Relevance Daniel Overdorf Even the most seasoned homileticians balk at sermon application. Why? Because application requires preachers to toss a grenadelike “thus saith the Lord” into people’s lives, and to do so repeatedly. —From the introduction Despite the concern many pastors feel when it comes to sermon application, most homiletics texts devote little more than a chapter, if that, to this vital topic. Daniel Overdorf has filled this glaring gap with Applying the Sermon. This book equips preachers to develop sermon application that grows from the biblical text and addresses the needs of congregations. Applying the Sermon leads the reader to wrestle with the theological issues related to sermon application and then guides the reader through a repeatable methodology that will result in applications that maintain biblical integrity and relate in a practical way to contemporary listeners. Each chapter includes snippets of interviews with five of today’s most respected homileticians—Haddon Robinson, Will Willimon, Tom Long, Vic Pentz, and Bob Russell.

“Daniel Overdorf has delivered wisdom from a thinker/preacher who can speak with authority on the issue. . . . [Sermon application] is an area where preachers habitually struggle.” —Kenton Anderson, Dean and Associate Professor of Preaching, Northwest Baptist Seminary, Author of Choosing to Preach “In recent years we’ve seen a number of emphases in preaching. We’ve been encouraged to consider the literary genre, to consider narrative, to allow sermons to follow the forms of their texts, to be concerned about exegesis and illustration. I’ve thought for some time that we’ve needed something in the area of application. . . . While the topic is dealt with in sections of homiletics texts, there seems to be little that addresses the issue directly. It appears to me that Daniel Overdorf may be on to a good format and approach.” —Chuck Sackett, Former President of the Evangelical Homiletics Society, Professor of Preaching at Large, Lincoln Christian Seminary

They give you an overall Christian understanding of the Qur’an with English comments on each sura. This book is a must read if you are interested in understanding Islam and building a bridge to witness to Muslims about the truth revealed in the Bible.” —Avery Willis, Executive Director, International Orality Network

Building Bridges in Muslim Evangelism Raouf Ghattas, Carol Ghattas In order to understand and minister to Muslims, Christians must first understand the Qur’an. This guide for Christians explains the central messages of the Qur’an in simple terms and illustrates how knowledge of Islam’s sacred text can aid evangelism and religious understanding. In A Christian Guide to the Qur’an, Raouf and Carol Ghattas have created a tool that can build bridges of understanding between Christians and Muslims. Drawing upon their years of experience working in Muslim cultures and their extensive knowledge of Islam, the authors outline the worldview set forth in the Qur’an with a focus on evangelism. The authors also helpfully provide a glossary of Arabic terms and three appendixes detailing important dates in Islam, biblical names found in the Qur’an, and biblical references in the Qur’an.

The Convergent Church Missional Worshipers in an Emerging Culture Mark Liederbach, Alvin L. Reid This thought-provoking volume seeks to understand and evaluate the currents of the ecclesiastical scene. Authors Alvin Reid and Mark Liederbach combine the strengths of conventional Christianity with the best contributions of the emerging church to envision a “convergent” church. This new model attempts to move beyond the antipathy that has developed between conventional and emergent groups and urges Christians to honestly consider the best that each camp has to offer. Liederbach and Reid find biblical support for their new model of convergent Christianity in the ministry and teachings of the early Christians in Acts, and draw helpful parallels between the early church and the modern church.

The Diversity Culture Creating Conversations of Faith with Buddhist Baristas, Agnostic Students, Aging Hipsters, Political Activists, and Everyone in Between Matthew Raley A new culture is emerging—one of spiritual openness, moral flexibility, and social diversity. This diversity culture makes evangelicals uncomfortable, not because they feel threatened, but because they feel excluded. Writing from the perspective of a conservative evangelical, author Matthew Raley tackles the social tensions between evangelicals and the diversity culture. Drawing on analysis of contemporary media, ancient sources, and Scripture, The Diversity Culture examines cultural barriers and how they can be broken, helping Christians understand this cosmopolitan group on their own terms. This book inspires and equips believers with the understanding and tools they need to cross socioeconomic, ethical, and ideological barriers and heal relationships in the name of Christ.

Surrendered to the Task of Great Preaching Conclusion: Bearing the Cross in the Pulpit: The Difference Between Preaching and Yelling

Dying to Preach Embracing the Cross in the Pulpit Steven W. Smith Drawing inspiration from Paul, the seminal preacher, Dying to Preach takes a fresh look at the whys of preaching. In 2 Corinthians 4:12, Paul describes the philosophy of his ministry as “death in us, but life in you.” Building on this scriptural framework, Steve W. Smith illustrates the theology of preaching through the metaphor of vicarious suffering, dying so that others might live. As he elaborates the intersection of the cross and the pulpit, Smith shows why the preacher must die to self, die for others, and die in Christ so that congregations may live.

endorsement “Steven W. Smith calls for preachers to be willing to die in the pulpit. In essence, he calls for a generation to surrender themselves to cross-centered preaching in which the preacher surrenders everything to the high calling and the urgent purpose of preaching the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ. His example is the Apostle Paul and his goal is to see a generation of preachers follow the example of the great apostle. In Dying to Preach, Smith offers compelling biblical insights and keen proposals that will transform preaching and produce preachers who will preach the cross and nothing less. This is a timely book and a much needed contribution.” —R. Albert Mohler Jr., President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

Invitation to World Missions A Trinitarian Missiology for the Twenty-first Century Timothy Tennent Invitation to World Missions combines a strong biblical anchor with practical suggestions. This unique text is arranged in three parts according to the Trinity’s roles, relationships, and activity. Tennent questions whether missions as currently conceptualized is adequate and he challenges the reader by building the book around key theological foundations such as “mission dei” and the “new creation” vision for the global church. This volume will call and enable the reader to understand how missions is biblically and theologically basic to Christianity and how missions is essential to living out an abundant and impassioned life.

The Spirituality of Jesus Nine Disciplines Christ Modeled for Us Leslie T. Hardin What do the Gospels reveal about Christ’s spirituality? Do they accurately portray the disciplines He followed? These questions are rarely asked of the Gospels, but they can yield astounding insights. Leslie T. Hardin argues that Jesus’ spirituality is seen not in miracles, but in His everyday activities. In the Gospels we can catch glimpses of these instructive daily routines. Hardin identifies nine practices or disciplines that allowed the Spirit to work in and through Christ: • Prayer and solitude • Care for the oppressed • Resisting temptation • Corporate worship • Scripture study • Meal sharing • Simplicity • Submission to the Father • Evangelism and proclamation Hardin looks at how these disciplines opened up avenues for the Spirit, and how they can be integrated into the lives of modern Christians.

Now Christians and highly respected theology professors, the Caner brothers are particularly qualified to present an unprecedented insider’s look at Islam.   Newly updated and expanded from its original edition, Unveiling Islam is a sympathetic yet firm presentation of the entire scope of Islam—its practices, ethics, and beliefs, including the primary differences between Christianity and Islam. The authors then present a practical strategy Christians can use to open a productive dialogue with Muslims.

Foundations of Spiritual Formation

A New Reader’s Lexicon of the Greek New Testament

A Community Approach to Becoming Like Christ Paul Pettit

Michael H. Burer and Jeffrey E. Miller

Foundations of Spiritual Formation takes a unique approach to its subject, arguing that we become like Christ in the context of authentic, Christian community. Without undermining individual Bible study, private prayer, and meditation, the authors emphasize these pursuits for the purpose of both personal and community enrichment— that the whole body, as well as the individual, may be built up.

Improving on earlier lexical works, A New Reader’s Lexicon of the Greek New Testament incorporates all words that occur fewer than fifty times in the New Testament. In canonical order, it catalogs a word’s frequency in each book, in each author’s writings, and in the entire New Testament. References to rare or noteworthy word usages are included, allowing the reader to quickly identify words of special significance. 978-0-8254-2009-2 | 512 pages | $34.99 | Hardcover

Preparing for Ministry Ancient Near Eastern Themes in Biblical Theology Jeffrey J. Niehaus Ancient Near Eastern Themes in Biblical Theology traces the many parallels between the Old Testament (and Bible as a whole) and the ancient Near East, including creation and flood narratives, common literary and legal forms, supposed acts of deities and the God of the Bible, and more. Instead of merely studying a random selection of parallels, however, Jeffrey Niehaus proposes that they represent “a shared theological structure of ideas in the ancient Near East, a structure that finds its most complete and true form in the Old and New Testaments.” This comprehensive and enlightening resource promises to help students and discerning Bible readers to intellectually grasp and appreciate the overarching story of the Bible within its cultural development.

A Practical Guide to Theological Field Education Edited by George M. Hillman Jr. Written for ministry students, Bible college and seminary professors, church leaders, and nonprofit organization leaders, Preparing for Ministry addresses many of the questions raised by field education, contextualized learning experiences, and internship programs. Readers will learn about the value of theological field education, its purpose and challenges, the need for flexibility in education, and the resources available for students and instructors. Reminding readers that field education is part of spiritual formation, each chapter begins with Scripture and ends with prayer. Each chapter also includes reflection questions and recommended reading. 978-0-8254-2757-2 | 368 pages | $24.99 | Paperback

Experiencing God’s Story of Life and Hope

A Guide for Students and Pastors Paul D. Wegner

A Workbook for Spiritual Formation J. Scott Duvall

Preaching the Old Testament responsibly poses a challenge for busy pastors. With skill and realism, Using Old Testament Hebrew in Preaching provides a workable guide to unearthing its treasures. Wegner emphasizes the importance of using Hebrew in preparation for preaching and offers a detailed process for moving from text to exegesis to proclamation. Homiletics and Hebrew students will profit from the bibliographies and illustrations that reinforce the benefits—to both the preacher and the congregation— that come when using the Old Testament’s original language for preaching. Using Old Testament Hebrew in Preaching will motivate professionals, pastors, and students to delve into the richness of the Hebrew Old Testament, and will equip them to probe new depths in preaching the Old Testament to contemporary believers.

Practical and realistic, Experiencing God’s Story of Life and Hope leads believers through the process of growing spiritually. Bringing his skills and expertise to bear, Scott Duvall guides readers as they look at what they believe, how they behave, and who they are becoming—three essential considerations in spiritual growth. Each brief, four- to five-page lesson begins with a close examination of Scripture and ends with personal application. In each chapter, Duvall teaches Christians a thoroughly biblical approach to spiritual maturity, allowing God to work in their lives. 978-0-8254-2538-7 | 208 pages | $21.99 | Paperback

Using Old Testament Hebrew in Preaching

James K. Hoffmeier

What the New Testament Authors Really Cared About A Survey of Their Writings Edited by Kenneth Berding and Matt Williams Fifteen top-rated professors from twelve leading Christian colleges and universities have collaborated to write this succinct, accessible New Testament survey. Unlike similar entrylevel textbooks, all the contributors teach undergraduate students and understand their culture. Introductory issues (Who? When? Where? Why?) are condensed to a one-page snapshot of all the most pertinent information. In addition, more than one hundred applications are highlighted in sidebars to clarify how the New Testament authors might apply their writings to Christians living in the twenty-first century. The book’s uncomplicated structure and creative format make it a perfect tool for Christian education programs in the church and college New Testament courses.

Beautifully illustrated, The Archaeology of the Bible is an ideal resource for anyone interested in learning more about the societies and events of the ancient Near East and how they affect our understanding of the Bible. Author James K. Hoffmeier takes the reader on a fascinating journey around the archaeological remains of the ancient Near East, providing a review of Bible history and examining the role of archaeology in understanding Scripture. Includes 53 color photographs and 6 detailed maps! 978-0-8254-6199-6 | 192 pages | $29.99 | Hardcover
