Determinants of employee satisfaction in POWERGRID - A study (G. Jawahar) ABSTRACT 1. Introduction:

Satisfied employees are assets of any organization.

Success of the corporation is attributed to its satisfied human resources. Various studies show that a satisfied employee is

motivated

customer satisfaction and inturn positively influences organizational performance.

In the organizational perspective, when we know the pulse of

the workforce we can predict their likelihood to stay with the company. Casually moving around, informal talks with the employees, open house discussion, and formal feedback system are some of the methods in which employees satisfactory level is measured. environment,

Work culture, positive

training

and

development,

compensation and incentive schemes, employee welfare, opportunity to grow, stress free work situation, creativity, openness, flexi working time, non-monetary benefits, career avenues, place of posting, profit sharing, democratic style of leadership, good communication, hierarchy, less bureaucracy are some of the reasons generally people get satisfied in organisations.

In this study a survey is proposed to measure the factors

responsible for employees satisfaction in POWERGRID.

Detailed review

of literature would be undertaken in order to understand the subject and its applicability in organizations of similar nature in India and abroad.

There

would be a separate section, on the organization profile (Power Grid corporation of India Limited), a leading navratna company in Indian Power sector.

The study would also briefly explain the employee satisfaction

survey which was conducted a couple of years before with a section of employees. The study intends to have following objectives: 1. To find out the factors responsible for employees satisfaction in POWERGRID. 2. To understand the implication of employee satisfaction in the organizational context. 3. To suggest measures to improve employee satisfaction in the organization. 2. Methodology:

The study would be conducted through a structured

questionnaire with the sampling size of 125-150 executives posted in corporate centre, POWERGRID Corporation. The questionnaire would contain demographic variables, and other variables on employee satisfaction. Various statements would be framed to gauge the opinion of employees in a five point likert scale. 2.1. Stratified random sampling would be applied among the executives of various departments at the corporate level.

A Pilot test would be

administered among respondents in order to find out the usability of the tools. The data would be analyzed with frequency distribution, and factor analysis. 3. Results, discussion and recommendation: The data so collected will be processed through SPSS software. The study would suggest possible policy measures to the corporation and scope for the future research and answers to the academic questions on the subject.

About the Author: Shri. G. Jawahar, Presently working as Chief Manager in HRD department, Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, Gurgaon, Haryana. Shri. G.Jawahar is an MBA(1988) from Madurai Kamaraj University. He has also completed B.L(1998) degree from government Law college, Trichy. He has submitted his doctoral thesis at department of social work, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi in September 08 and expecting his vivo-voce in March 09. He has 19 years of experience with various facets of HR and HRD in both corporate and regional offices of POWERGRID which is a leading navratna PSU company in Indian Power Sector.
