Ambulatory Blood Pressure Training
ABPM Training Expectations ABPM technologies Clinical application ABPM 6100 Features and benefits Common objections Competition
What ABPM Does Device that takes blood pressure readings typically over 24 hour period Patients wear a blood pressure cuff and a monitoring unit Measurements are taken automatically at periodic intervals, may be different during the day vs night The monitor stores all of the readings and typically connects to a computer or printer to generate a report
Types of ABPM Technology Auscultatory Technique Utilizes a microphone to detect Korotkoff (“K” sounds) Also senses pressure changes in the cuff Less convenient hook-up than oscillometric technique Sensitive to microphone placement Microphones are often delicate and effected by external sound Technique used by the WA QuietTrak

Types of ABPM Technology Auscultatory with “R” wave gating Requires chest electrodes to detect patient’s “R” wave in addition to a microphone More accurate More difficult to Hook-up Not particularly well suited for physician office use
Types of ABPM Technology Oscillometric Technique Uses only a cuff, no additional sensors Senses pressure changes in cuff Uses algorithm to calculate systolic and diastolic values Easy Hook-up

Anatomy & Disease Management
What is normal blood pressure? Cannot be precisely categorized 120/80 is usually considered normal for healthy adults
Types of Hypertension White Coat Hypertension- Only at hypertensive levels in doctor’s office Primary Hypertension – Unable to identify specific cause Secondary Hypertension – Caused by identifiable influencers (pregnancy, another disease, medication…) Labile Hypertension –Variable/non consistent from day to day
Dangers of High Blood Pressure Hardening of the Arteries (stroke & heart attack) Enlarged Heart (heart failure) Kidney Damage Eye and Brain Damage
Treatment Lifestyle Modifications Lose Weight Exercise Quit Smoking Reduce Alcohol Consumption Reduce Stress Diet Medication
ABPM Market and Applications
ABPM Patient Market 50 Million hypertensives in U.S. (est.) 20-25% white coat hypertensive Growing worldwide problem Medical organizations supporting the use of ABPM: American College of Cardiology (ACC) The American Society for Hypertension (ASH) The British Hypertension Society (BHS)
Applications of ABPM Helps distinguish sustained hypertension from white coat hypertension Assesses patient response to anti-hypertension medication Can improve patient adherence to treatment Only way of obtaining “true” 24 hour readings during regular daily activities Source: Sixth Report of the Joint Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (1997)
