Four Steps to ABG Interpretation STEP 1 <7.35 Acidosis

Use pH to determine Acidosis or Alkalosis pH 7.35-7.45 >7.45 Normal or Alkalosis Compensated
Use PaCO2 to determine respiratory effect PaCO2 <35 35-45 >45 Tends toward Normal or Tends toward alkalosis Compensated acidosis Causes high pH

Neutralizes low pH Step 3
Causes low pH Neutralizes high pH
Assume Metabolic Cause when respiratory is ruled out. You will be right MOST of the time if you remember this simple table: High pH Alkalosis High PaCo2
