A2 REPRESENTATIONS UNIT 4 TEXTS IN CONTEXT In order to prepare and revise for this paper, you will have to present your own independent research on the topic areas. Miss Thomas directed you to the research for black youths and you should have selected 5 points to be used from these in order to support your essays. You may learn quotations from these articles or paraphrase, but it is a good idea to cite the source as that immediately tells the examiner that you have researched. To prepare in the same way, but more independently, for your sitcoms texts, you are going to research under the following points. • Institutional factors. Who owns the productions company? What evidence of synergy, convergence etc. • Genre, pick out 3 main conventions that are upheld or that you feel have evolved. What does this tell you about genre theory? • Audience: Who is your audience and what is your proof? Segmentation of audience, schedules, representations? What is appealing about this text for the audience? • Media languages: What are the conventions of media languages, cite 3 examples from your sit com • Ideology, this can be linked mainly to representation and you should contextualise historically, what are messages are being constructed? Is this an oppositional text? What are critics views? Here are some possible sources media.guardian.co.uk (The Sitcom Situation) mediaknowall.co.uk abermedia.co.uk New-media.org.uk then go to issues, lectures, media context and lecture 19 representations and stereotypes
