FOREWORD The warmth and love of Christmas has always seemed to me, best experienced on December 24th with the shopping complete and the family gathered in to welcome the events of this significant holiday season. Part of our family tradition was to attend the Christmas Eve worship service at church. Hearing the endearing and familiar carols, sung by children and adults alike, helped us to reflect on the true reason for the season. When arranging and composing music, I’m always surprised by the inspirational moments that steer my creativity in one direction or another. Blending words and musical ideas in fresh and innovative ways helps to offer insight into a story that has been told over and over again, making us feel that we are hearing it for the first time. We are pleased to offer: • AWAY IN A MANGER set to the Scottish tune, FLOW GENTLY, SWEET AFTON • BE BORN IN US TODAY featuring O Little Town of Bethlehem and soulfully set to the American folk classic, WAYFARING STRANGER • SLEEP IN HEAVENLY PEACE including Silent Night, Holy Night partnered with the delicate Still, Still, Still • A dance-like setting of Infant Holy, Infant Lowly combined with the poignant Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming makes up CHRIST WAS BORN FOR YOU • and the summary piece, THIS CHILD EMMANUEL, a rhythmic context of What Child Is This? is combined with an original chorus announcing the arrival of “This Child Emmanuel: Almighty God is with us!” From beginning to end, the powerful text and music will wrap the engaging story of the Eve of Christ into a special package. I invite you to use this collection creatively: soloists, duets, small groups, or as written for choir. Options for narration by Rose Aspinall and music introductions are offered for various worship needs. An accompanying CD with enhanced orchestration by Ed Hogan is also available as a service option. Each anthem may be used in whole or in part throughout the Christmas season. The complete work runs approximately 25 minutes in length. The story of Christmas offers reassurance to believers knowing that God is with us both now and forevermore. His birth set a plan into motion that brought hope and calm to a fragile world. Five Carols for the Eve of Christ Optional Narr ation

Intro - Away in a Manger Christmas Eve—there is something so hopeful in the solemn, stillness of this night. It’s quite unlike any other night of the year—for it is the advent of the Christ Child. Tonight the entire world holds its breath, angels ready their voices while God from His throne descends! And here below, our hearts rejoice. We close our eyes and exhale—for Christ, the Lord is coming. Unto us a Child is born! Unto us a Son is given! Oh come, Lord Jesus, we’ve been waiting. Alternate narration: (for use when performing as a single anthem and not part of the complete program.) Come to the manger of Christ. Kneel in the presence of this mystery. A child has come to redeem us—a Child! It is to this humble place that we all are invited. Are you poor? Come. Lost? Come. Are you weak? Come—for such is the Christ Child. In a poor stable lies the glory of God in human flesh. He is God’s love made manifest. Oh come and see the face of the Savior.

Intro - Be Born in Us Today But you, Bethlehem, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be Ruler over Israel. Oh Bethlehem, city of King David, you who are the House of Bread became the birthplace of our Savior, the Bread of Life. Awake! Rejoice! In your town tonight lies the God of heaven revealed in flesh.

Intro – Sleep in Heavenly Peace While the world slept, the fullness of time arrived. Angels and shepherds—and eventually Magi would welcome this infant King. The Savior has come to stay.

Intro – Christ was Born for You This Messiah, this Rose who is coming will be born to poverty, born for mercy and redemption. The dusty, dank stable where He will draw his first breath will be humble. Mary, His mother and Joseph, His earthly father will be weary from their journey and a little overwhelmed too. Outside a choir of angels is warming up under a canopy of stars and God’s love—God’s love is shining. This little Child’s delight will be in the fear of the Lord. He won’t judge by what He sees with His eyes, or decide by what He hears with His ears; He will proclaim good news to the poor! He will bind up the brokenhearted, declare freedom to captives and deliverance from darkness for prisoners.

Intro – This Child Emmanuel And so the God of Heaven comes to our lowly earth. God, the mighty visits us— and our hearts tremble. The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We are no longer alone. Behold, He stands at the door—and on this silent night, peace to those on whom God’s favor rests.
