Text Alignment TEAM:

Class assignment week 7

VAGD101-4

Print situates words in space more relentlessly than writing ever did. Writing moves words from the sound world to the world of visual space, but print locks words into position in this space. Control of position is everything in print. Printed texts look machine-made, as they are. In handwriting, control of space tends to be ornamental, ornate, as in calligraphy. Typographic control typically impresses most by its tidiness and invisibility: the lines perfectly regular, all justified on the right side, everything coming out even visually, and without the aid of guidelines or ruled borders that often occur in manuscripts.. This is an insistent world of cold, non-human facts.

Project. Text Alignment and layout

DUE 10/16

Purpose. To explore the possibilities of typographic alignment (flush left, flush left, justified, centered) as the basic architecture of typography. Consider the positive/negative space you are creating within the frame of the design, using the block of text and white space. Look at how you create interesting design through examination of possibilities: kerning, leading and spatial considerations, and use of the typestyles within a family to provide interest/ unity /balance. Assignment. Interpret the meaning of a block of text (above) by manipulating the alignment of lines and columns (flush left, flush right, justified, centered). Use ONLY the Classic Typeface family you have been assigned as a team, 9 point type. No variations in size are permitted. Readability can be played with to create a strong design. Use adjustments in kerning, leading, and layout possibilities to create your design with consideration of positive/negative space and overall composition. Format. 6 x 6 inches - present 4 designs, printed out (indicate 6x6 frame and design placement) DUE NOON class 6: 4 DESIGNS (one each, emphasis on FL, FR, Justified, centered,), alignment based on perpendicular placement (alignment and baseline are perpendicular). Each should show unique design, be posted as a 4 page PDF, and emailed to instructor by 5pm 10/8. During class 7, team should meet to identify their goals, create 5 agreed on basic layouts, and divide work. All members of the team should agree on the designs, (thumbnails), presentation of typeface, use of characteristics (within family), and divide work up evenly.

Text Alignment Class assignment week 7 VAGD101-4 DUE beginning of class 8: 4 designs printed out for presentation, (with 6x6 frame indicated) Team will be responsible for presentation that discusses the specific characteristics of the typeface they represent, using characteristics and physical differences in relationship to the other 4 classic typefaces. RUBRIC 40 4 unique designs, each one communicating clear knowledge of specific alignment use, showing consideration of unity/variety/balance and creative use of positive/ negative space, spelling, craftsmanship. 4 page pdf of 4 designs sent to [email protected] by 10/1 5pm. 20 craftsmanship: designs printed out and presented to class beginning of class 8, 20 team presentation of unique characteristics of typeface (team), shows understanding of type category, individual characteristics, comparison, contrast and analysis. 20 evidence of team cooperation and workload distribution, on an individual basis, can have effect on grade Why are we in teams? Teams are not only used in the modern workplace, but may help you learn course material more effectively. What's my role on the team? There are many possible roles on a team, but it's important not to become too "stuck" in them. Everyone should be able to contribute ideas on the entire project. What do we do in meetings? Meetings function most efficiently when members come prepared and ground rules are laid out. How can I communicate my ideas effectively? The first step to effective communication is listening. Then you will be better able to understand how to phrase your ideas more effectively. How can the team get organized and stay on track? Defining the task, then maintaining a central archive and checklist can help the group stay on track. What happens if a team member is not doing his or her part? Try contacting and discussing the issue with that person before going to your instructor. What happens if we do not get along? Disagreement among team members is inevitable and even good for the team. But you do not want to let it escalate. http://tlt.its.psu.edu/suggestions/teams/student/index.html
