“I have a dream!”
Writing from Within, page 24
Imagine a place where people are judged not “by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” These words were the dream of the civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. To make his dream come true, he spent his life fighting racism and prejudice in the United Sates. He played several roles in his fight for equal rights for all Americans. First, he was a pastor in a church. He disliked violence and taught his congregation that they could win the war of inequality with love, not hate. Besides being a pastor, he was also a speaker. His “I Have a Dream” speech is still considered one of the best speeches of the twentieth century. Furthermore, he was a group organizer. He traveled throughout the South helping African Americans register to vote, and he organized a huge march in Washington, D.C. King said that he wanted to change the United States and, in many ways, he succeeded. Consequently, many Americans consider him a great leader.
