ROBOTICS ASSISTED SURGERY Using da Vinci surgical systems By Johanna Lee

Who? 

da Vinci systems were released by Intuitive Surgical company who provides medical technology for surgeons and hospitals Intuitive Surgical was founded in 1999

What? 

      

da Vinci systems are robotic platforms that help in performing major operations from an MIS (minimally invasive surgery) approach Features: Surgeon’s console 3D HD vision system Patient side cart 4 robotic arms Endoscopic camera, attached to the robotic arms EndoWrist ® instruments, which are the surgeon’s controllers

When? 

Prototype developed in 1980’s under U.S. Army contract Intuitive Surgical first released the da Vinci system in 1999 July 11th, 2000 the da Vinci system was approved to perform surgery by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration

Where? 

There are over 1000 da Vinci systems in hospitals worldwide More than 850 academic and community hospital sites around America ( Good Samaritan Hospital, Community Memorial hospital etc.)

Why?  

MIS uses small cuts to perform surgeries With MIS there is less blood loss, less pain, smaller scars, and faster recovery then traditional open surgery. In order to make steady, exact procedures needed for limited space surgeries, the da Vinci system provides robotic arms and vision systems which make it possible

How? 

With the da Vinci systems, a surgeon at the main console manipulates 4 robotic arms while using a HD viewing system so they can see what they’re doing. Endowrist instruments are the controllers, they act as an extension of the robotic arms that moves like a natural wrist, giving it more flexibility. Costs about 1.5 million U.S dollars
