MA>M)'TH HISTORIC DISTRICT

Description: This proposed district includes the area once incorporated as "Mammoth City." Located just south of Eureka, over the mountain, and east of Tintic Valley, Mammoth contains one long through-street (leading to the Mammoth Mine) and various others, flowing from it. The density of population is a mere trickle of the past, with some thirty-five people still in residence. Residential and industrial structures dominate the area--those being primarily vernacular in form. Significance: Mammoth represents a clustering of structures all tied to the theme of mining. This area represented one of the initial strikes in the district (1870); and -the-Manraoth Mine, associated with a prominent Utah mining family, the Mclntyres, is still being mined. In addition, approximately 85 percent of the existing structures were built between 1892 and 1910. Mammoth's reputation as a mining area, primarily gold, was widely known throughout the United States and in the 1870s in Great Britain, as the Mammoth-Copperapolis, Ltd. was a British venture. Boundaries of the district follow closely those of incorporated Mammoth City (map enclosed). Included are the Majnmoth shaft, old glory hole, and the Ajax shaft (old Mammoth-Copperapolis).
