Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ِ‫بِسْمِ الِ الرّحْمنِ الرّحِيم‬ In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ُ‫يَا أَ ّيهَا الْمُ ّدثّر‬ [74:1] O you who are clothed!

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ْ‫قُمْ فَأَنذِر‬ [74:2] Arise and warn,

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ْ‫ك فَ َكبّر‬ َ ّ‫وَرَب‬ [74:3] And your Lord do magnify,

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ْ‫َوثِيَابَكَ فَطَهّر‬ [74:4] And your garments do purify,

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ْ‫وَالرّجْ َز فَاهْجُر‬ [74:5] And uncleanness do shun,

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ُ‫وَلَ َتمْنُن تَسْ َتكْثِر‬ [74:6] And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase,

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ْ‫وَلِ َربّكَ فَاصْبِر‬ [74:7] And for the sake of your Lord, be patient.

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ِ‫فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي النّاقُور‬ [74:8] For when the trumpet is sounded,

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ٌ‫ك يَوْ َمئِذٍ َيوْمٌ عَسِير‬ َ ِ‫فَذَل‬ [74:9] That, at that time, shall be a difficult day,

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ٍ‫عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِير‬ [74:10] For the unbelievers, anything but easy.

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

‫خلَ ْقتُ وَحِيدًا‬ َ ْ‫ذَ ْرنِي وَمَن‬ [74:11] Leave Me and him whom I created alone,

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

‫ت لَهُ مَالً ّممْدُودًا‬ ُ ‫جعَ ْل‬ َ َ‫و‬ [74:12] And give him vast riches,

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

‫َوبَنِينَ شُهُودًا‬ [74:13] And sons dwelling in his presence,

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

‫ت لَهُ تَ ْمهِيدًا‬ ّ ‫وَمَهّد‬ [74:14] And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably;

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫ن أَزِيد‬ ْ َ‫طمَعُ أ‬ ْ َ‫ثُمّ ي‬ [74:15] And yet he desires that I should add more!

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

‫عنِيدًا‬ َ ‫كَلّ ِإنّهُ كَانَ لِيَا ِتنَا‬ [74:16] By no means! surely he offers opposition to Our communications.

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

‫سَأُرْهِقُهُ صَعُودًا‬ [74:17] I will make a distressing punishment overtake him.

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫إِنّ ُه َفكّ َر وَقَدّر‬ [74:18] Surely he reflected and guessed,

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫ف قَدّر‬ َ ْ‫ل كَي‬ َ ِ‫فَقُت‬ [74:19] But may he be cursed how he plotted;

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫ثُ ّم قُتِلَ َكيْفَ قَدّر‬ [74:20] Again, may he be cursed how he plotted;

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫ثُمّ نَظَر‬ [74:21] Then he looked,

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫س وَبَسَر‬ َ َ‫ثُمّ عَب‬ [74:22] Then he frowned and scowled,

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫ثُمّ أَ ْدبَرَ وَاسْ َتكْبَر‬ [74:23] Then he turned back and was big with pride,

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ُ‫فَقَالَ إِنْ هَذَا إِلّ سِحْرٌ يُ ْؤثَر‬ [74:24] Then he said: This is naught but enchantment, narrated (from others);

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ِ‫ل الْبَشَر‬ ُ ْ‫ل قَو‬ ّ ِ‫إِنْ هَذَا إ‬ [74:25] This is naught but the word of a mortal.

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫سَُأصْلِيهِ سَقَر‬ [74:26] I will cast him into hell.

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ُ‫َومَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا سَقَر‬ [74:27] And what will make you realize what hell is?

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ُ‫ل تَذَر‬ َ َ‫لَ تُبْقِي و‬ [74:28] It leaves naught nor does it spare aught.

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ِ‫لَوّاحَ ٌة لّ ْلبَشَر‬ [74:29] It scorches the mortal.

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫علَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَر‬ َ [74:30] Over it are nineteen.

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ً‫عدّتَهُمْ إِلّ فِتْنَة‬ ِ ‫وَمَا جَعَلْنَا أَصْحَابَ النّارِ إِلّ مَلَئِكَةً وَمَا جَعَلْنَا‬ ‫لّّلذِينَ كَفَرُوا لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ الّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ وَيَ ْزدَادَ اّلذِينَ آمَنُوا‬ َ‫إِيمَانًا وَلَ يَرْتَابَ اّلذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَلِيَقُول‬ ً‫الّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مّ َرضٌ وَالْكَافِرُونَ مَاذَا أَرَادَ الُّ بِ َهذَا مَثَل‬ َ‫ضلّ الُّ مَن يَشَاء وَيَهْدِي مَن يَشَاء وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُود‬ ِ ُ‫َكذَِلكَ ي‬ ِ‫رَّبكَ إِلّ هُوَ وَمَا هِيَ إِلّ ذِكْرَى لِلْبَشَر‬ [74:31] And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals.

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ِ‫كَلّ وَالْ َقمَر‬ [74:32] Nay; I swear by the moon,

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫ل إِذْ أَدْبَر‬ ِ ْ‫وَالّلي‬ [74:33] And the night when it departs,

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫وَالصّبْحِ إِذَا أَسْفَر‬ [74:34] And the daybreak when it shines;

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ِ‫إِ ّنهَا لَِحْدَى الْ ُكبَر‬ [74:35] Surely it (hell) is one of the gravest (misfortunes),

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ِ‫نَذِيرًا لّ ْلبَشَر‬ [74:36] A warning to mortals,

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫لِمَن شَاء مِنكُ ْم أَن يَتَقَدّ َم أَ ْو يَتَأَخّر‬ [74:37] To him among you who wishes to go forward or remain behind.

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ٌ‫س َبتْ رَهِينَة‬ َ َ‫ل نَفْسٍ ِبمَا ك‬ ّ ُ‫ك‬ [74:38] Every soul is held in pledge for what it earns,

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ِ‫ب ا ْليَمِين‬ َ ‫ل َأصْحَا‬ ّ ِ‫إ‬ [74:39] Except the people of the right hand,

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫جنّاتٍ َيتَسَاءلُون‬ َ ‫فِي‬ [74:40] In gardens, they shall ask each other

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫عَنِ الْمُجْ ِرمِين‬ [74:41] About the guilty:

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫مَا سََلكَكُ ْم فِي سَقَر‬ [74:42] What has brought you into hell?

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫صلّين‬ َ ‫ك مِنَ الْ ُم‬ ُ َ‫قَالُوا لَمْ ن‬ [74:43] They shall say: We were not of those who prayed;

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫َولَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِ ُم ا ْلمِسْكِين‬ [74:44] And we used not to feed the poor;

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫ض مَعَ الْخَائِضِين‬ ُ ‫َوكُنّا نَخُو‬ [74:45] And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who entered into vain discourses.

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ِ‫َوكُنّا نُكَذّبُ بِ َيوْمِ الدّين‬ [74:46] And we used to call the day of judgment a lie;

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ُ‫حَتّى َأتَانَا ا ْليَقِين‬ [74:47] Till death overtook us.

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫فَمَا تَنفَ ُعهُمْ شَفَاعَةُ الشّا ِفعِين‬ [74:48] So the intercession of intercessors shall not avail them.

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫فَمَا َلهُمْ عَنِ التّذْكِرَةِ مُعْ ِرضِين‬ [74:49] What is then the matter with them, that they turn away from the admonition

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ٌ‫كََأنّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مّسْتَنفِ َرة‬ [74:50] As if they were asses taking fright

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ٍ‫فَ ّرتْ مِن قَسْوَ َرة‬ [74:51] That had fled from a lion?

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

‫ئ مّنْهُمْ أَن يُ ْؤتَى صُحُفًا‬ ٍ ‫ل يُرِيدُ كُلّ امْ ِر‬ ْ َ‫ب‬ ً‫مّنَشّ َرة‬ [74:52] Nay; every one of them desires that he may be given pages spread out;

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

َ‫كَلّ بَل لَ يَخَافُونَ الْخِرَة‬ [74:53] Nay! but they do not fear the hereafter.

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ٌ‫كَلّ ِإنّهُ تَذْكِرَة‬ [74:54] Nay! it is surely an admonition.

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

ُ‫فَمَن شَاء ذَكَرَه‬ [74:55] So whoever pleases may mind it.

Surah al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

‫وَمَا يَ ْذكُرُونَ إِلّ أَن يَشَاء الُّ هُوَ أَهْلُ التّ ْقوَى‬ ِ‫َوأَهْلُ الْ َمغْفِرَة‬ [74:56] And they will not mind unless Allah please. He is worthy to be feared and worthy to forgive.
