NOVICES MOOT COURT COMPETITION, 2009-10

RULE I: LANGUAGE The Competition shall be in English. RULE II: TEAM COMPOSITION Each team shall consist of 2 members from the First year. RULE III: REGISTRATION All the teams have to register their teams and give their names by September 2, 2009. RULE IV: MEMORIALS The following requirements for memorials must be strictly fulfilled. Non-conformities will be penalised: a. Each team must prepare memorials for both parties to the dispute. b. Once the memorials have been submitted, no revision, supplements or additions will be allowed. c. Two hard copies each of the memorials of both the parties to the dispute must be

submitted to Prabal Mehrotra and Niharika Ray latest on September 10, 2009 by 11:00 A.M. for the purpose of evaluation. Late submissions will result in penalties. d. The memorials have to be submitted on typed A4 size paper printed on one side and

must contain (within the prescribed limits): •

Statement of Facts (Argumentative statement of facts would attract penalties) – 1 Page only



Statement of Issues – 1 Page only



Summary of Arguments – Maximum 2 Pages



Arguments Advanced – Minimum 4 Pages (Less pages would invite a deduction of points)



Prayer – 1 Page only

e. The font should either be “Times New Roman” or “Arial” size 12 and double spaced

for the main text. Footnotes must be in font size 10, single-spaced and double space left between footnotes. f. Memorials must have a one inch margin on all sides of each page. g. Covers must be placed on the memorials as follows: Prosecution: Blue, Defence: Red h. The cover page of the memorials must state the following:

Identity of Memorial as Petitioner or Respondent

The identity of the members shall not be revealed anywhere in the memorial. Violations of this provision shall result in penalties including disqualification. The decision of the Moot Court Co-ordinator will be final.

RULE V: ORAL ROUNDS A. There would be two rounds of preliminary rounds, quarterfinals, semi-finals and

finals. a. Each team would be allowed a maximum of 20 minutes in the preliminary rounds

and quarterfinals. No speaker shall take more than 10 minutes.

b. Each team would be allowed a maximum of 30 minutes in the semi-finals and

finals. No speaker shall take more than 18 minutes. B. Dates for Oral Rounds: Preliminary Round I : September 11, 2009 Preliminary Round II : September 14, 2009 Quarter Final Round : September 15, 2009 Semi-Final Round Final Round

: September 16, 2009 : September 16, 2009

RULE VI: SCOUTING a. Teams will not be allowed to observe the orals of any other team till the time the team is declared to have advanced to the next round. Scouting is strictly prohibited. Scouting by any of the teams will result in disqualification. b. Any team can file a written complaint with the Moot Court Co-ordinator, regarding a

case of scouting. The decision of the Moot Court Co-ordinator will be final. RULE VII: AWARDS a. Winners - Rs. 1000 b. Runners-up – Rs. 600 c. Best Student Advocate – Rs. 500 d. Best Memorial Award – Rs. 600

No withdrawal will be permitted except under exceptional circumstances.



Audience will be permitted only after the preliminary rounds.

RULE IX: Under all circumstances the decision of the Moot Court Society will be final.
