Lesson Plan Date: Monday September 29, 2008 Period: 3 (10:40-11:20) Class: 3-1 Teachers: Matthew (Native Teacher – NT) Gloria Teacher (Korean Teacher – KT) Unit: I like Apples (Lesson 5-3) Objectives:

Students will be able to communicate their likes, dislikes and be able to answer and ask questions about their likes. Materials: CD-Rom, food flash cards (at least 8 different food flash cards), textbook for students, chalk and marker teachers Introduction and Review (5-6 minutes) Do a short introduction and review to prepare the class with the previous day materials and teachers. This introduction will go as follows:  NT & KT: “Good morning students” Students (Ss) “Good morning Matthew Teacher…”  KT: “How are you today?”  Ss “I’m fine, thank you”  NT: “How’s the weather today?”  Ss “It’s ________________”  NT: “Ok, very good!” After do a short review with the NT of the PowerPoint presentation (ppt) of Canada:  NT: “Does anyone remember the presentation of Canada? What are some Canada cities?”  SS: “Toronto”  NT: “Good, any other cities?”  Ss “Niagara Falls”  NT: “That’s right. Ok anyone remember the animals from Canada?”  Ss: “…..I can’t remember”  NT: “Ok, one was the polar bear, does anyone know another one?”  Ss: “Cats”  NT “That’s right, good….”

Now the Korean teacher will do a very short review from the previous lesson.  KT “I like apples”  SS “I like apples.”  KT [ask a student] “Do you like apples?”  S1 “Yes, I do” or “No, I don’t”  KT [ask a different student] “Do you like apples?”  S2 “Yes I do” or “No, I don’t”  KT [ask a different student] “Do you like pizza?”  S3 “Yes I do” or “No I don’t”…. Warm-Up Activity (5 minutes) Using picture cards, the teacher will hide a picture card away from the student. The student will have a chance to guess what picture is hidden by asking “Do you _________?” If they ask correctly the hidden picture, then the answer is “Yes I do.” If they ask incorrectly, then the answer is “No, I don’t” NT [picks up an ‘apple’ flash card and hides away from students] I like …….  S1 Do you like oranges?  NT No I don’t  S2 Do you like chicken?  NT No I don’t  S3 Do you like apples?  NT [shows the picture card] Yes, I do. The teacher may repeat this exercise and, if needed, may ask the student to replace the teacher and do the exercise with the classmates. 

Look and Speak (10 minutes) Now we will use the CD-Rom and do the look and speak. First the children listen carefully to the dialog. After they listen, the teachers can ask some basic questions about the dialog.  NT Who is this?  SS This is Julie.  KT Who is he?  SS He is Minsu.

 KT What did Minsu say?  SS I like apples  NT What did Julie say?  SS I don’t like apples. Now listen to dialog two, after they listen to dialog two, the teachers can ask some basic questions about the dialog?  NT Who is this?  SS It’s Minsu.  KT What did Minsu say to Thomas?  SS “Do you like fish?”  KT Good. What did Thomas say?  SS No, I don’t. Now the children will do some listen and repeat exercise, using the expressions from both dialogs. First, we can practice as a class. Next, the class can be split so one group will listen and repeat to a certain character and another group will listen and repeat to a different character. Lastly, the teacher will ask some students to volunteer and speak the dialog that was practiced. The teacher can try this with a few different groups of students. Let’s Sing (10 minutes) Time for the students to learn a new song. First the teacher will explain some aspects of the song. After the explanation, the teacher will have the students listen carefully to the song. After the children hear the song, the teacher can play the song again and the students this time can sing along. After going through the entire song, the children can be split into different groups; one group can sing the “I like apples” verse and the other group can sing the “I don’t like apples” verse. We can also split the class from the ‘question’ and ‘answer’ portion of the song. For another activity, we can substitute words for apples (using words like ‘chicken’, oranges, grapes, spaghetti) Group Guessing Game (10 minutes) Split class into 6 or 8 groups. Each group will have a different food (group 1 will have chicken, group 2 will have apples…). Each group cannot reveal which food they have and keep it a secret from other groups. The other groups will have to ask the other groups which food the other group has using “do you like _________?” questions. If the group doesn’t have the food, that it’s “no, I don’t.” If the group has the food, then it’s

“yes, I do.” Here is an example  NT Group 1 can ask first  G1 [ask to group 2] Do you like bananas? G2 No I don’t. [they have orange flash card]  NT Ok, now group 2 can ask group 3  G2 [ask group 3] Do you like apples?  G3 No, I don’t. [they have chicken flash card]  NT Now group 3 can ask group 4  G3 [ask group 4] Do you like apples?  G4 Yes I do [they have apple flash card] The game will continue until all the fruit from the groups are revealed. After the game is finished, the game can start again, but the groups will have a different flash card.  Another variation of this game is that there are 2 of each flash cards (for 8 groups there are 2 apple flash cards, 2 orange flash cards, 2 banana flash cards, 2 fish flash cards) and each group must find their match 

Wrap-Up Time to finish the class  NT “Ok, children we are finished English Class today.”  KT “Did you have fun today?”  Ss “Yes!!!!”  KT “Ok, goodbye students, say goodbye to Matthew Teacher”  Ss “Goodbye, goodbye Matthew Teacher  NT “Goodbye, see you next time.”
