Work and Machines What is Work?
Chapter 5 Section 1
The Meaning of Work Work- a force is exerted on an object that sets the object in motion. In order for you to do work on an object, the object must move some distance as a result of your force The force you exert must be in the same direction as the object’s motion Work is most efficient when you exert a force in the direction of the object’s motion
Calculating Work Amount of work done on an object depends on the amount of force exerted and the distance the object moves Work = Force x Distance Joule (J) = Newtons x meters (work) 100 Joules = 100 N x 1 m 200 J = 100 N x 2 m
