The polo season is in full swing at the Midlands clubs of the Karkloof, Lions River and Mooi River and offers a thrilling spectacle for those who like a fast game. Lions River last weekend hosted its annual Lions River Club Tournament with eight teams. “It was a very successful tournament,” said tournament director John McKenzie “— most enjoyable and relaxed.” In the end, Mooi River sides came out tops, winning both divisions, their A team taking the A section and their B team walking away with the B section.

Harry Mandy’s polo pony called Body Shop won the Vuma Feeds “best playing pony” award, and runners-up were Guy Williamson and Ned Kelly (or, rather, their ponies, that is). Looking to the future, in August Lions River will be holding its annual 4x4 tournament, a big and bustling affair. “The club is very active with an abundance of players — probably one of the biggest memberships around,” John said. “There’s great spirit here, plenty of participation and varying levels of polo.” Practice commences at 12 noon on Satur-

days and 10 am on Sundays each weekend. So, with polocrosse also taking place on weekends, “it’s quite a social scene at the club,” John concluded. And visitors are most welcome! nds

Senior golfers, find playing enjoyment with SAGES Retired golfers — or should that be “retired people”, since one seems not to retire from golf — why not join SAGES Senior Golfers? Do you want to add a new dimension to retirement by stimulating senior golfing participation at a time when horizons are narrowing, through the opportunity to make new friends and thereby contribute to a positive attitude gained through the experience of playing golf at a reasonable cost on the scenic Midlands Golf Courses? Then look no further than the SAGES Senior Golfers Society, the South African Golfing Embassadors Society. Join this local, congenial band and play golf at a different course each month mostly on the second Tuesday of each month. Entry starts at 50 and ceases with one foot in the grave and the other hovering. For details consult a SAGES member from one of the Midlands Golf Clubs.

On joining, you qualify to play at any one of the 27 SAGES branch golf tournament as listed in the annual fixture booklet and Midlands Branch member booklet you receive on being inducted as a member. The costs are R50 joining plus annual R75 fee, and excludes greatly-reduced green fees and R50 competition fees. Sages was founded on the 3rd December 1974 and has grown over the years to twenty seven branches in the Republic of South Africa. The local branch is known as the Natal Midlands Branch, which incorporates the Midlands golf clubs of Estcourt, Mooi River, Bosch Hoek, Richmond, Victoria Country Club, Maritzburg, Noodsberg Sports Club and Greytown, with Howick also being Midlands Sages Home Club. The principal object of this nonprofit society is to provide golfing and social recreational amenities for its members.
