3rd Grade Newsletter Reader’s Workshop
Dear Parents, The Third Grade is off to an exciting new school year. We are so happy to see that the children are willing and eager to learn many new things. This year will be different from the previous school years. This will be the first time your child will be taking state standardized tests. ELA is the state reading test and will be given January 13 and 14, 2009. The state math test will be given March 3 and 4, 2009.
During the month of September, we administered the ECLAS Assessment. This is a way to determine your child’s level in vocabulary, spelling, reading accuracy and fluency. We look forward to working with you as your child grows and develops this school year. Third Grade Teachers
In the third grade, your child will be reading books on his or her own level. In addition to improving reading skills and learning new reading strategies, your child will learn to read more fluently and become a more independent reader. Your child will read in groups with other children, as well as, work on their own with teacher guidance.
Writer’s Workshop This year, in the Third Grade, your child will continue to write in a writer’s sourcebook. This is where all of their ideas are written and kept. They can add to any story at any time. The children will learn to edit and revise their own writing. They will meet with the teachers for conferences, as well as, their peers, in order to gain further insight into their writing. Our genre for the month of November will be a narrative piece. Our focus will be fairytales and fables. All the children will become better writers as they work through the writing process.
Everyday Mathematics Everyday Mathematics is the math program used in most NYC schools. In Unit 2, we will be working with number families. We will begin problem solving using clue words to help us solve these problems. A test in Unit 2 will be forthcoming. The computation will be getting harder. Two and three digit numbers will be added and subtracted with regroupings. The children will soon begin to learn their multiplication facts.
