General Experiences in Design and Supervision of Road Bridge Projects

DPM, since its establishment has been active mainly in the Communication Sector, i.e. Roads, Highways and Bridges, Water Resources Development and Drainage, Water Supply & Sanitation, Environment, Buildings, Feasibility Study and Survey, Infrastructure Development etc. Name of some of the major projects of Design and Construction Supervision of Roads & Highway and RCC/PC Bridge under different departments completed so far are: A.

ROADS & HIGHWAYS DEPARTMENT (RHD)

A1.

Design and Construction Supervision of 110.0m Long RCC Arch Bridge Connecting Road No. 11 of Banani to Road No. 41 of Gulshan over the Gulshan Lake under Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) Financed by Govt. of Banglades; July 2007- Feb. 2009

The project includes design and construction suprevision of a RCC Arch bridge connection road no. 11 of Banani to road no 41, 43, 35A of Gulshan. The services that are being rendered: physical and topographical survey, sub-soil investigation, preparation of design-drawing, estimate of cost, tender dossier & tender evaluation along with development of Environmental Management Plan(EMP), Health Safety Plan to be followed during construction. A2.

Bridge Replacement Project, Package No. 2, (Phase-I Design, Phase-II Supervision) Financed by Department for International Development (DFID), U.K. August 2002- Jan 2006

The project includes replacement of 15 nos. of narrow bridges on different roads located in Barisal, Jhalokathi and Perojpur districts (Road R870 Link 241-240-260). The services that rendered are: physical and topographical survey, sub-soil investigation, preparation of design-drawing, estimate of cost, tender dossier & tender evaluation along with development of Environmental Management Plan(EMP), Land Acquisition and Resettlement Plan, Health Safety Plan and full time construction supervision and quality control of the construction work. A.3

Construction of 750m long P.C. Girder Bridge (TeestaBridge) over River Teesta on Rangpur-Kaunia road (Road No. N58) under RHD, Feb. 2001 to August, 2003.

The project is a design-built project. Sservices of our firms include: (i) Design of Caission foundation for the bridge; (ii) Design of bridge superstructure which includes PC girder, RCC Deck, RCC Abutments, bridge bearing, expansion joints. (iii) Preparation of Technical Specification (iv) Cost estimate and preparation of Bill of Quantity. A.4

Construction of 648m long P.C. Girder Bridge (Dharla Bridge) over River Dharla at Kurigram under RHD, Feb. 2001 to August, 2003.

The services of our firms in association with BRTC include: (i) Reviewing the design of various components as and when necessary and suggesting actions to be taken by RHD. (ii) Review of programme prepared by contractor and progress of works, giving comments and suggestions for improvement. (iii) Full time supervision of construction

works at site, quality control, arranges testing of construction materials. (iv) Certify the quality of works of the contractor for payment. (v) review hydrological analysis and geotechnical investigations. A5.

Checking & Verification of the design of 848.39m long (as per revised design 485.20m long) 2-lane Pre-stressed Girder Bridge (Patuakhali Bridge) over Laukhati River at 38th km on Barisal-Patuakhali Road under RHD, April 2001July 2001

The services include - checking/modification of the existing design/drawings done by RHD and redesign of the different components of the bridge as necessary including hydrological studies and review of geo-technical investigation. Our firm DPM was appointed consultant by M/S. Enamul Haque (Pvt.) Ltd. the contractor of the project with approval of RHD. A6.

Bridge Improvement and Maintenance Project (BIMP-2). Training of RHD Engineers in Bridge Design Software under RHD. June 1999-September 1999

The objective of this project was to develop Bridge Design Software Package for designing P.C. Girder Bridge. The services provided were-preparation of Bridge Design Manual with specification for design-drawing including standard format of tender document, development of design software and imparting training to RHD Engineers on bridge design and software. A7.

Construction of 630.5 meters long Prestressed Concrete Girder Bridge over Doratana River at 2nd km of Bagerhat-Pirojpur Road. RHD Khulna Road Circle. January 1998-May 1998

It is a 2-lane Prestressed Concrete Girder Bridge with Cast-in-situ bored pile foundation. Services include - site investigation and preparation of complete structural design drawing. Our firm DPM was appointed design consultant by Messers AL-Amin Construction Co. Ltd., the contractor of the project, out of the list of consultants selected by RHD for this project. A8.

1991 Cyclone Damaged Road Reconstruction Project of RHD, Financed by ADB Loan No. 1149-BAN (SF) ), Nov. 1992-June1997.

The project involved survey, investigation, design, documentation, tendering and its evaluation, and construction supervision of about 197 km. of roads and the required drainage structures, i.e. bridges and culverts in the coastal areas of South Eastern Bangladesh. The work was undertaken by our firm in association with Roughton and Partners International and L.G. Mouchel and Partners, both of U.K. and Engineering Science Ltd. of Bangladesh. The work completed in June 1997. A9.

Road Overlay and Improvement Project - Overlay and Seal Coat Component under RHD (Financed by ADB Loan No.1287-BAN (SF), Dec. 1994 – June 1997.

The project involves construction supervision of road maintenance work comprising of asphaltic concrete overlays over about 400 Km and seal coat over 600 Km of road stretches located in Bangladesh, East of Jamuna river; providing training to RHD Staff and Local Contractors; providing assistance to RHD's Project Directors and others in

Project management, monitoring, implementation and contract administration. The work was done in association with Beca Worley International Consulting Engineers Ltd (BWI) of New Zealand, Howard Humphreys & Partners Ltd (HHP) of U.K., Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation Ltd (SMEC) of Australia and Engineering Science Ltd (ESL) of Dhaka. The works completed in all respects in June 1997. A10.

Construction of 58m long 2 span, Prestressed Concrete Girder with RCC deck bridge on bored pile foundation on Ramu - Cox's Bazar Road. May 1992-June 1994 AML-Monico Consortium Contractor of RHD for RIP Contract No. 8 (Worked as Consultant to Contractor) Owner RHD. Investigation, design review and complete redesign, quantity estimating and top supervision of the following bridges: i. ii.

58 m long 2 span P.C. Girder with R.C.C. deck bridge. 12 m long single span bridge.

Our firm DPM was appointed consultant by AML-MONICO Consortium, Contractor of RHD for RIP contract no. 8. Our services includes: Soil investigation, design review, redesign, re-bar schedule and BOQ preparation, and top supervision of construction work. A11.

Construction of bridge on Bhatkura-Basail Road (FRIP of RHD), January 1991 – August 1993.

185 m long 6 spans (approx. 30 m each.) P.C. Girder with R.C.C. deck bridge on bored pile foundation. Our firm DPM was appointed consultants by AMS-JVA, Contractor of RHD for FRIP Contract no. 10. Our services included: Soil investigation, design review, re-design, re-bar schedule and BOQ preparation, and top supervision of construction works. The project completed in Aug. 1993. B.

Construction of Flyover at Khilgaon Rail and Road Intersection in Dhaka City Project Director, LBC Project, LGED Bhaban, Agargaon, Dhaka. January 2000April 2000

Preparation of Design & Build Tender Document, conceptual design of the flyover with its ramps and loops, physical and computer 3D models. The length of the flyover and its loops are about 800m. C2.

Construction of two 4-lane R.C.C Arch Bridges at Road No. 8A, and Road No. 32 in Dhanmondi R.A., Dhaka having 42m and 34m length s respectively under LGED. October 1998-May 2000

Site survey and investigation, hydrological studies, soil investigation, planning, design, preparation of tender documents, specifications, BOQ, estimate of cost, selection of contractors and supervision of construction works

Construction of 225 meters long 2-lane R.C. Bridge over Bangshi River at Hatubangha, Mirzapur under LGED. July 1999-December 1999

It is a 225m long R.C Bridge with 11 equal span. Its superstructure comprises 5 nos. simply supported span R.C Girders per span and the deck are of 4 & 3 span continuous modules. The substructure abutment is solid wall type and the piers are 2 column type and the foundation comprises 610mm dia cast-in-situ bored piles. River bank protection is included. Services included: Site investigation and preparation of complete structural designdrawing including design and build contract document as LGED nominated consultant. Our firm DPM, as LGED nominated consultant, was appointed design consultant by Messers Monico Ltd, the design and build contractor of the project under LGED. C4.

Construction of 38 meters long 2-lane bridge at Uttara Model Town, crossing Cohor River connecting sectors 10 & 11 under LGED. July 1996-October 1998

It is a 4-lane bridge 38m long with 3 equal span (13.71m out to out deck width). The superstructure consists of P.C. Girders and R.C. Deck, substructures piers are column type, the abutments are full depth split type and foundation is cast-in-situ bored piles. The services comprises: Preparation of design-drawing tender documents, estimate of quantity and costs and top supervision of construction works. C5.

Design and Supervision of Project entitled “Construction of Large Bridges/Culverts on Important Feeder and Rural Road” under LGED (1st Phase), January – Dec.1999.

The Project Comprises Construction of 1200 meters of bridges/culverts on feeder roads and 1000 meters of bridges/culverts on Rural Roads including construction of approach and link roads with all large bridges at about 60 location spread all over Bangladesh in 12 months. The services of the consultant include: (i) verification of the locations considering development cost, socio-economic and environmental point, (ii) assisting LGED in finalising the list of structures and roads to be built (iii) verification of the available LGED design, specifications and tender documents and suggest modifications to suit the project works (iv) sub-soil investigation and hydrological survey (v) detailed structural design, drawing, cost estimate of all selected structures (vi) preparation of tender documents and assessment of tender and (vii) supervision of construction works. The project completed in December, 1999. C6.

Cyclone Damaged Roads Rehabilitation Project under LGED - (Financed by OPEC fund, Loan No. 631P), Dec.1995-June 2000.

The project involves survey, investigation, design, documentation, tendering, its evaluation and construction supervision of reconstruction/rehabilitation of 364 km of Feeder Roads, Type - B and rural roads, 1068 m of bridge/culvert on these roads and also construction of 855 m steel bridge on rural roads in 15 coastal districts of Bangladesh. The work was undertaken in association with Bangladesh Consultants Ltd. (BCL), Dhaka. The supervision work of the project completed in June, 2000 in all respects. C7.

Preparation of Design Manual for Prestressed Concrete Bridge (LGED), July 1995 – Aug. 1996.

The work involved studying and reviewing the present design standards and practices of pre-stressed concrete bridges in Bangladesh and to update the same for the manual and to develop software programs for undertaking designs, drawings and estimates for various spans of bridges between 20 and 40 meter spans, and also to prepare a manual of such designs, drawings and estimates, training of counterpart staff of LGED etc. C8.

Construction of Large Bridges/ Culverts on Important Feeder & Rural Road at different places of Bangladesh (2nd Phase) under LGED, Aug. 2000 to Feb. 2003.

Site survey and investigation, hydrological studies, soil investigation, planning, design, tender documents, specification, BOQ, estimate of cost, selection of contractors' and supervision of construction works of bridges & culverts on important feeder and rural roads. D.

Detailed Engineering Design of Link Road from Rayer Mohal to Koiya Bazar Road under Khulna Development Authority (KDA), Financed by GoB. May 2004October 2004

The project consists of construction of about 6.0 km road with 7.32 m wide bituminous pavement, 3 nos. bridge/culverts and other ancillary works related to embankment protection, road safety, arboriculture etc. This road will connect Rayer Mohala to Rupsa Bypass at Koiya bazaar. The services includes: i) Review all available studies, investigation results of the project including review of the hydrological report, existing master plan. ii) Detailed hydrological study of the area ,iii) Carry out detailed engineering design of road geometry, pavement and road structures, iii) Prepare Tender Documents for construction works and iv) Assist the Employer in tendering procedure. D2.

Detailed Engineering Design of Link Road from Bastohara Main Road to City Bypass Road. Financed by GoB. May 2004- October 2004

The project consists of construction of about2.40 km road with 7.32 m wide bituminous pavement, 4 nos. bridge/culverts and other ancillary works related to embankment protection, road safety, arboriculture etc. This road will connect City Bypass Road to the existing Jessore-Khulna Road. The services includes: i) Review all available studies, investigation results of the project including review of the hydrological report, existing master plan. ii) Carry out detailed engineering design for the project components, iii) Prepare Tender Documents for construction works and iv) Assist the Employer in tendering procedure. D3. Design and Facilitate Training Session on Structural Design of Aggregate Sand Roads with Appurtenant Rural Road Structures under Building Union Infrastructure for Local Development (BUILD) under CARE Bangladesh. May 2001- August 2001. The objectives of this consultancy is to prepare a training curriculum on structural design of Aggregate Sand(AS) Road using AS technology including alternative flexible and rigid

pavement designs and structures upto 20 meters span and conduct training sessions in order to develop the technical expertise of LGED and CARE Engineers. -

D4.

Developing Design Manual for Low Cost Bridges/Culverts in Flood Proofing Project (FPP) under CARE Bangladesh. April 2001-August 2001

Review all design & drawings, road structure design manual, visit FPP sites, explore the scope to adopt the local technology and indigenous material in planning and design, to develop a design manual describing site and type selection procedures, prepare software for designing, cost estimating of all mentioned structures, conducting 2-days training to orient 30 staff of CARE, LGED and PNGO on software, design and drawings. D5.

Design and Construction Supervision of Bridges and Culverts under 12 Structures Programme, Directorate of Relief and Rehabilitation, Financed by USAID, Sept.1989 – May 1993.

Detailed survey, investigation, design, documentation, tendering and tender evaluation, supervision of construction and maintenance works of 12 numbers bridges and culverts (15m to 40m spans) and their approach roads scattered in different districts of Bangladesh. The work started in September 1989 and was completed in May 1993. This project was done in association with Prestressed Concrete Products Ltd., Bangladesh.
