Questions a) Explain why the Sex Discrimination Act was passed in 1975. (12 marks)
b) “Government-led change ensured a great improvement in education between 1964 and 1975.” Explain why you agree or disagree with this view. (24 marks)
Try to identify both the short- and the longer-term reasons for change. The inadequacy of the Equal Pay Act will need mentioning, as will issues arising from the growth of female employment i.e. more women had jobs therefore…. It is better to choose 3 reasons and to expand upon these at length than simply to list half a dozen. This quotation invites a challenge. There were changes, but did these bring ‘ improvements’? Debate changes in both the provision of secondary school and of higher education. Remember that the examiner will be looking for a balanced answer. Expanding upon two points on one side of the argument, and one point on the other side is all that is required.
