January 2-5, 2010 • God Without Borders “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.“ Galatians 3:28 We create borders between us and God, between Christians and other faiths, between families and friends, between poor and rich. We even create borders inside ourselves. How do these borders prevent us from becoming the community God calls us to be in Christ Jesus?

Pastor to Multi-Staff Pastor Solo April 11-16, 2010 • Pastoral Transitions: From “Doing It All” to “Getting It Done”
Many first call pastors gain their identity and understanding of ministry within the context of the smaller congregation. After gaining experience in a smaller congregation, pastors often discover that moving to a larger congregation requires them to make many changes. The focus of this event is on helping pastors making their personal transition to leading a larger congregation rather than teaching how to lead a congregation experiencing growth. Participants will have the opportunity to work with two experienced pastors who have successfully migrated to leading larger congregations. Leaders: Harris Schultz, Deborah Fortel, and Lucy Keil.
Pastors Conference Associate April 12-15, 2010 • The Gift That Is Within You “Your task is to keep telling the basic story, representing the presence of the Spirit, insisting on the priority of God, speaking the biblical words of command and promise and invitation.” Eugene Peterson Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you through prophecy with the laying on of hands by the council of elders. Put these things into practice, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress. 1 Timothy 4:14-15 (NRSV) Leaders: Susan DeWyngeart/Worship, Keynote; Mahan Siler/Spiritual Director; Rodney Sadler/Bible Study Leader; and Dave VanderMeer and Brent Ivey/Music.

Education Christian May 31-June 4, 2010 • Words to Build a Life On Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise person who built their house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall because it had been founded on rock. Matthew 7:24-25 (NRSV) One day as Jesus the carpenter spoke to the people, he put two houses in a parable, addressing our human tendency to hear things, listen to them, agree with them - but then go out and do not one thing about them. We Christian Educators are called to help our congregations hear and do. Come look at old and new models of transformational architecture Christian Education, built on the solid foundation of God’s word. Spiritual Formation Retreat Fall October 21-24, 2010 • Liturgy of the Hours: An Old Practice for the New Church
In a time when Christians and the church are yearning to renew their spiritual vitality and deepen their faith, Paul Lang recovers for the church the ancient but timeless Liturgy of the Hours, a long-practiced discipline of the faith which countless saints have used to gently, patiently, and persistently reshape their lives before God. This course will couple instruction about the Liturgy of the Hours with the daily immersion of praying the offices. You will learn about the biblical roots and historical development of the Liturgy of the Hours, how to sing the Psalms, about the theological themes and emphases associated with each office, and be given many ideas about how to take this practice home with you. Leaders: Paul and Sarah Lang
Evelyn Green Retreat Fall October 22-24, 2010 • Praying Visually Along with Celtic saints, we will learn to “see” God in the beauty of creation around us – in the lake, the streams, the mountains, the flora and fauna. We will develop a practice of praying with our eyes. Then, gaining inspiration from what we have seen, we will invite the beauty of creation to empower our creative process and connect us to the Creator. We will pray visually not only with creation’s beauties but as we create visual expressions with watercolor and collage and as we play with the colors of fabrics and papers.

It is the high privilege of Montreat Conference Center to host the gathered community for worship during the summer months in Montreat. Each Sunday, people come to Anderson Auditorium as summer visitors, early-bird conferees, year-round residents, vacationers, Cottagers, and conference leadership. They come together from across the valley and across the country to worship God together in Montreat. We are fortunate to hear the Word proclaimed from some of our denomination’s most highly acclaimed preachers. The 2010 summer worship series includes John Buchanan, Steve Eason, Shannon Johnson Kershner, John Kuykendall, Brian McLaren, Pete Peery, Vic Pentz, Joe Roberts, Marcia Mount Shoop, and Will Willimon.
