I am so glad that you are not only checking out my website, but that many of you are going to be taking my mystery class, “Our Town”. My trip south to visit with you will be here before we know it. Well, you know I can’t show you too much, but if you are hoping for fabric ideas you’re at the right place. Here are the fabrics that I used in the sample. I am pleased with how it turned out! The colors don’t show up the best: Color A is a dark brown floral and Color B is a burgundy.
There will be a special drawing for guild members leaving a comment on this post.... so please do. I am looking forward to seeing you in a few short weeks. Kari

Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative: A reminder from Donna Jo & Kay If you haven't brought your Alzheimer's Art Quilt for donation yet you can still do so at the September meeting. They will have the forms there that you will need to fill out for donation. Remember, if you have used a pattern, please have an "OK" from the designer...you just contact them (email address is usually on the pattern) and explain what you are doing and they will most likely send their "OK" and "congratulations." You will also need to figure out approximately the amount you spent on supplies/what it is worth (to go on the form). If you are completely confused, just check out: www.AlzQuilts.org

Vice Presidents Report submitted by Louise Whitlow We have started a new community project! There will be a presentation at the Sept meeting. We will be making pillowcases for the Oncology floor and Blank Children's Hospital. Our hope is to brighten up the room at the hospital with a cheery, bright and fun pillowcase. The average stay is 3-5 days and there are about 1000 in one year that go through there. This would be an excellent stash basher and an opportunity to brighten a persons stay at Iowa Methodist Hospital. It only takes 1 yard of fabric. We have been using 3/4 yd and 1/4 yd and 2 1/2 inches for the trim. The Quilters Cupboard will be having a sewing day on Sept 12 and they will furnish the machines and thread. All you have to do is go in there and sew a few for us. Our goal for the day is 100 so we have made up 100 kits that are ready to be sewn together that day. Please go through your stash (we all have one) and grab some cute, bright, fun fabric and bring it to the Guild meeting or give me a call and we can arrange to get it picked up. Thanks for helping make this a great success! P.S. They want them 100% cotton and no trims
other than cotton. They want them washed before and we are not using any perfumed soap and no dryer sheets. (all scent free). If you do not wash them we can do it. I am just happy to get donations. If this projects gets alot of donations I will probably go to the other hospitals. We want bright cheery fabric--remember there are as many boys as girls and men as women.
Coming Soon! AAQG Basic Quilting Skills Building Series Planning Meeting for all interested AAQGers We will be discussing the who, what , when and where of tucking sessions into the nooks and crannies of the AAQG 2009-2010 schedule. 2010 Retreat News submitted by Roxie Brown, Retreat Chair Fellow Retreaters: At the last guild meeting, I was asked to announce the dates for next year's retreat. Unfortunately, I didn't have my calendar with me. If I remember correctly, I guessed they were April 22, 23, 24 and 25th. Good news - I was right. So put those dates on your calendar and please plan to join us. Bad news - I have since been told that is the weekend of the Paducah Quilt Show. For that I apologize. I hope it won't affect very many of you. We decided to try a little bit later this year because we have had such bad weather the last few years. I hope these later dates will work out for all of you. If you have comments or suggestions regarding retreat, please let me know. I can't promise I will be able to implement all of your suggestions but I will certainly consider them. My email address is:

Donation Quilt Update submitted by Laura Parker On Tuesday, August 4th, all our donation quilts and activity bags were delivered to Children and Families of Iowa (CFI), ChildServe and to our contact person for the Children's Hospital in Bangladesh. In total, we had over 70 quilts, 66 bags as well as some extra boxes of coloring books and crayons. Our pictures were taken at CFI to put on a donor bulletin board. The following thank you email was sent to our guild from ChildServe. Thank you all for your donations!
Presenting donation quilts to ChildServe Hello Group, Thank you so much for the wonderful and beautiful quilts. All 42 of your quilts have already been delivered to a lot of services. Children from our homes, apartments, childcare centers and respite department in our Ames location will benefit from your generosity. Your group will keep 42 children warm this winter and some of our kids will use these quilts all through the year, since their body temperature goes down so quickly…they are actually have layers of blanket/quilts on them most of the time. Thank you again and we appreciate you giving your time and love to our children one stitch at a time. Kaylene Steele Volunteer Services Coordinator
Cyndee Davis suggested this article, 23 secrets for stress-free quilting, by Jill Reicks for the newsletter. We thought it was a keeper and will share bits with you as space allows. The article was originally printed in Quilters Home magazine. Jill Reicks is the owner of Pine Needles Sewing Center in Cedar Rapids, IA
5. Cheap is not chic.
Donations going to Children & Families of Iowa
Stop with the cheap thread already! Short staple cottons are held together by firing and waxing, which often make the resulting threads heavier than you need in your seams. If you struggle with the price of good quality thread, calculate how much thread you actually can go through in an hour of piecing. I guarantee that expense will be less than you'll pay for the wig you’ll need after you end up pulling your hair out from using the cheesy stuff.
