Mark 2 rev emory d dively 2009.06.07
When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly tht he was back home. v1.
Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. v.2a
2bWhile he was
preaching God’s word to them, 3four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a a mat.
They couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. v.4
Then they lowered the man on his mat, right in front of Jesus.
Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My child, your sins are forgiven.” v.5
But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting the thought to themselves,
“What is he saying? This is blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!” v.7
Jesus knew immediately what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you question this in your hearts? Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man... v.8,9
‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up, pick up your mat and walk’?
“So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said... v.10
“Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!” v.11
And the man jumped up, grabbed his mat, and walked out through the stunned onlookers. v.12
They were all amazed and praised God, exclaiming, “We’ve never seen anything like this before!”
Point 1 Your Sins are Forgiven!
The first thing Jesus did was not heal the man, but forgive the man.
Fix the spirit first the body second. Sometimes healing is on the inside.
Jesus destroys the Jewish traditions of forgiveness!
Point 2 Power of God
Jesus demonstrates the power that he gives to us through the Holy Spirit
What is so incredible about our faith is that all the miracles we read about in the Bible are for us today too!
Point 3 They praised God
Notice...the miracles of Jesus always point to God.
How often do we look for attention for the good things we do?
Jesus’ work caused people to praise God. When we want to do great things, what is our motivation?
