Jesus and the first disciples rev emory d dively 2009 May 30
One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon (Peter) and his brother Andrew throwing a net into the water. For they fished for a living v16
Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” v17
And they left their nets at once and followed him. v18
A little farther up the shore Jesus saw Zebedee’s sons, James and John in a boat repairing their nets. v19
He called them at once, and they also followed him, leaving their father, Zebedee, in the boat with the hired men. v20
Jesus’ ministry now begins, first task? Find helpers!
they fished for a living
They left their career, their identity. Jesus asked them to leave behind their old self.
I will show you how to fish for people!
some say “You will become fishers of people” free people from bondage, teach, disciple, lead, etc.
they left at once and followed Him
no praying, no waiting, no guessing, just faith
James and John...mending nets..he called them at once, they also followed him mending their nets, means working hard, committed to their old life
God commands us to be like Andrew, Peter, James and John.
What calling could Jesus ask you, but you would say no?
When we are asked quickly into serving, what is our gut reaction?
Jesus met his disciples where they were, he didn’t wait until they were in church
What would the world be like if people did not continue to be fisher of people?
What would our church look like if we ALL became fisher of the deaf?
