Ma iling: Anke ny Are a Quilte rs ' Guild, P.O. Box 961, Anke ny, IA 50021

“Sharing a common thread!” Board Meeting The next board meeting will be Tuesday, May 5, 2009, 6:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny.

May is our annual guild challenge! Join us on Tuesday, May 12th, 7:00 pm at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny for our annual guild challenge. You'll be inspired by the creativity and skills of fellow guild members! Harriet Hargrave will be our speaker in June. She is also teaching two workshops. On Tuesday, June 9th, the workshop involves quilt piecing and the pattern for this class will be from her new book due out in September. Wednesday, June 10th, is an invisible machine applique class. Each class cost $40 for guild members & $45 for non-members. Contact Linda Northwick, 964-5594, for additional details. Here's a reminder—the June meeting & workshops will be held at the Ankeny Baptist Church.

Jean Taft shared this poem---enjoy! There are quilts that make me wonder There are quilts that make me blink. There are quilts that tug my heartstrings. There are quilts that make me think. But the quilts that mean the most And that fill my heart with glee Aren't the ones I see at quilt shows, But the rare ones made for me! --Author Unknown

Carol Doak dazzled us in April with her trunk show featuring vests, paperpieced miniature quilts and her amazing “Dear Jane Legacy Quilt” consisting of 300 different paper-pieced blocks. If you participated in one of Carol's workshops, bring your completed block (it doesn't have to be quilted just put together with borders) to show at our May meeting. There will be a drawing---and one lucky winner will go home with one of Carol's books.

Donate Snuggles to the ARL Cathy Dimit reminded guild members in March about the need for Snuggles at the Animal Rescue League. Snuggles are small blankets—they must be at least a 12 inch square—that are made for cat beds at the Animal Rescue League. These blankets can be made out of anything that would be cozy for a kitty to lie on. They can be made out of two layers of fleece and tied, they can have batting or not, they can be made from knitted things, or any soft fabric. Cats don't care what color the blanket is! This is a great learning project for new sewers. For more information contact Cathy at 967-8404.

Secretary's Report AAQG Board Meeting Minutes, April 7, 2009 It was passed that Susan Body would be the official board representative to initiate work on the website from our programmer & web design consultants. She will need the following for each web request: description of work request, due date, contact person. The by-laws need to be changed on the website and new member packets. Until this change is made they have been removed from the website. An announcement will be made at the meeting that dues are $25- and thanking everyone for their patience and sorry about the confusion. 2010 programs will be handed out at the quilt show instead of copies of the newsletter. Pam is going to create a poster display of what we have coming up for the next year. Quilt Guild Meeting Minutes, April 14, 2009 There were 94 members and 11 guests in attendance.

Deb welcomed the group and announced that Creative Vision is working with the Des Moines Guild and is looking for help in the form of volunteers to work at the fair teaching sewing at the Iowa State Fair. They are also looking for backings- 2-yard pieces- baby, children and teen fabric. The bonus- get into the far for free! More bags are needed for us to give to Family Services, keep up the good work on the donation quilts! The Quilt Show form will be on the website, pick up raffle tickets to sell, and the Country Store only has 25 items. Our speaker was Carol Doak, and she showed slides of her quilts that were paper pieced. She told us how she got started and you never know what the outcome of a broken leg…another book with 300 designs! She had brought an assortment of miniatures that were made in a day. Birthdays were honored, and door prizes awarded. We enjoyed Show & Tellremember if you show something you are working toward a good poker hand. Next month is the challenge. Refreshments were served. Respectfully submitted, Ramona Tapper

QUILT SHOW UPDATE

submitted by Lanae Rohwer It’s hard to believe the quilt show is only 3 months away! The quilt show committee is working hard on final preparations. I hope everyone is working on, or finishing up, quilts for the show and country store items.

Thanks to Lois Harmon for her generous donation of a quilt top to the Juvenile Arthritis Quilt Project. If you are interested in donating to this project or for more information please contact Janeen Pearson, 515-321-9699 or email [email protected]

Entry forms are in the newsletter and can be printed, filled out and mailed to Lisa Starr. By the end of April we should also have a form you can download from the website, fill out and e-mail to Lisa. Remember the deadline for your entries forms is June 9th, 2009. We are hoping most members will use the electronic option and e-mail entries. The show is our major revenue generator for the year and the profits are used to pay for our speakers throughout the year. Along with opportunities to help with set up and take down, please consider signing up for a shift or two throughout the quilt show. Working at the show is a fun and easy way to support the guild – sign up with a friend; most opportunities have room for two or more people. Volunteer forms for signing will also be available at the May and June guild meetings. Christy has been doing a great job this year with refreshments and has created an exciting new menu this year! The main course will be a hot potato bar with all the fixings. There will also be a chicken sandwich, chips, drinks and desert items. Along with the volunteer sheets there is also a sheet for donating food items if you would like to help out the show by donating food. We’ve started collecting the contents of the gemstone baskets – thank you to the Evening Stars and the Hunny Buns for turning the items in at last month’s meeting. Please bring you basket contents to the May meeting. This will give MaryLee and I time to put the baskets together. Quilter's Cupboard Has Moved!! This isn't a “scoop” since many of us have been to the new Quilter's Cupboard location, but, for those of you that haven't been yet----this article is for YOU!

Location, Location, Location!

There is a cute little room that features prints, brights & pastels --all things baby and kids. There are a few toys available for entertaining the smaller shoppers . Jenny's boys think it's fun to hide the bears—you can try to find them too.

Quilter's Cupboard is now located at 706 SW 3rd Street in Ankeny. The shop is very warm & welcoming, filled with the things you loved at the old store and new fun fabrics lines and quilting inspiration.

The shop has more batiks, 7 new lines from Jo Morton and an expanded selection of 108” backs including batiks. They have a new Buggy Barn line, new Red Rooster fabrics, new pastel wool pieces and LOTS OF NEW MODA.

There is more floor & display space in the new Quilter's Cupboard as well as a nice classroom area with room for everyone to spread out while sewing. They have a “seasonal” room located near the front door. It's filled with all sorts of holiday fabrics, kits and samples. Be sure to check out the “New Arrivals” room. It's loaded with goodies!

There are many new classes scheduled including one on photo transfer, crochet rag rug, toothbrush rug, and basic machine applique. There's a new hand stitching club beginning in May. It's time to sign up for a new Jo Morton club also. The wool club & Dear Jane club continue. So there's plenty to keep everyone busy all summer long at Quilter's Cupboard. Class details and more are located on their website. http://www.quilterscupboardiowa.com
