We have Harriet Hargrave coming in June. She will have two workshops---these will be held at the Ankeny Baptist Church---on June 9th & 10th. Our guild meeting on June Mickey Depre is coming back to our guild on February 9th will be held at Ankeny Baptist Church also. 10th. Her program is "Tips, Tricks and Other Stuff". There is still space in this workshop—the cost is $20. Sign-up at guild on February 10th or give Linda Northwick a call, 964-5594

The garage sale went well, at first count I think we have made over $250 that is excellent, and the participants also made a little money.

Reminder from Linda Northwick, program chair Just thought I would send a reminder to all guild members. This year we have a great selection of speakers coming to visit and the majority of our national speakers will conduct 1 or 2 classes. If you, as a guild, wish to continue to attract big name speakers then we need to also support the classes that they offer. In order to break even for the classes we need to sign up about 20 people to take those classes. We cannot afford to have national speakers unless we are willing to support the classes they offer. For those that are unaware, most classes from national speakers cost $700 to $750 per class. Please support the classes we are fortunate enough to offer this year.

Make sure you support the classes we offer with our speakers!!!!! That is a money maker or money loser depending on if we support them.

We have Carol Doak coming in April. Be sure to sign up for her workshops--Perfect Points and Sunrise

Our June meeting will be the second Tuesday of the month but at a different location. Our meeting will be at Ankeny Baptist Church (my church) so let anyone you know that Harriet Hargrave will be speaking there. Keep warm, my sewing room is the warmest room in my house, good idea to hang out there huh. Because Nice Matters Debbie Pierschbacher

Donation projects update Laura collected donation quilts at the January meeting but more are always needed and welcomed. This year, in addition to Child Serve and Children and Families of Iowa, we are collecting quilts for a hospital in Bangladesh. These quilts are for babies/small children and should measure 32 x 42”. We are also trying something new---we're making ACTIVITY BAGS. We will donate these to Children & Families of Iowa. We have some donated fabric of the perfect size to use for the bags, available at each guild meeting----be sure to pick some up!

Your roving reporters have been out, nose to the grindstone searching out shops to review. It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it, right?!? Celeste reports---it was a cold and snowy January day when Susan and I visited Fern Hill in South Amana, Iowa. I always love going to this shop! This shop is such a treasure trove! The owner and staff are so welcoming and friendly–-we felt very much at home.

Brandenburg. I had to buy some of her beautiful fabric immediately. Camelot is the company that produces it for them. On the selvage is reads “Fern Hill Collection.” How cool is that!?! Stephanie has done 3 collections – Iris, Dandelion Days, and Hollyhock Dolls & Garden Garments. Her new fabric lines to watch for are Iron Lace in May and Bluebirds next summer.

Fern Hill's owner, Patty Walsh Bailey spent lots of time with us and gave us great attention.

Some of Stephanie Brandenburg's fabrics.

Patty Walsh Bailey with Stephanie Brandenburg's floral fabrics

Fern Hill has been in business for 23 years, 20 at this location. In 2000 they had a fire, and I was afraid we’d lose this shop forever. I asked Patty about that, and she said they were going to close and had so many requests to re-open that they did! Thank goodness! Downstairs are gifts and home decorations. They have lovely antiques and architectural antiques (like urns or stained glass windows) for sale. You can buy antique quilts, finished quilts, or design a custommade quilt! I did this years ago. Fern Hill contracts with Amish women to make quilts. They hand quilted the quilt and long curtains for the French doors in my bedroom! Plus, I got to keep the leftover fabric for my own stash! Another feature downstairs is a little sweets shop & the most delicious fudge!! You can’t really do significant quilting without chocolate, can you? Upstairs you'll find the quilting fabric. I love their big selection of florals. Patty said she loves florals as well, and uses the palette throughout the shop. It makes for a beautiful, colorful place to be! They have an in-house fabric designer, Stephanie

My eyes weren't able to wander too far from the florals but if that’s not your style, Fern Hill carries many other fabric lines and styles. Visit Fern Hill's website, www.fernhill.net to check shop hours and get driving directions. Fern Hill's address is: 103 220 Trail, South Amana, IA and phone is: 319.622.3627. As we left, they told us to bring our quilting friends and they’d throw on the coffee pot and some pies and we’d have a great time! I could go for that! Any adventurers ready to go with me?
