A View from the Sideline gets a SWEET facelift Welcome to the Preview Edition of A View From the Sideline. Yeah, it took longer to get this copy out than we wanted, but when you see how much info we have packed inside this issue including a phenomenal college section, I think you will see why. I’m off to a late start on fantasy ratings so I've only done the abbreviated version. My full version won't be available until next week and it will be available in our pay version of the newsletter, but I've got ratings, sleepers and potential busts in this very edition and we are doing a fantasy football draft show on 1560 AM this Friday from 5 to 7 PM.

Yes, it’s taken years for the two of us to get it together...also known as learning a newsletter program. But, we’ve finally done it and look forward to providing you all of the great information that we’ve provided in years past. Just hopefully in a more Megan Fox kind or way. So, show it to your buddies - if they’re football fans, it’s a must read. Well, if I should say so myself. No matter what the ‘newsletter’ looks like.

LZ’S 20 TEXANS TO WATCH Zac Diles, LB: Diles has the ability to play all three LB positions which adds to his value although he's not the backup MLB right now and I'm not sure the weakside is his best side. Diles really showed improvement in pass coverage last year until he got injured and was out for the year, but he's still below average in that department in my opinion. Diles has shown plenty of improvement since he's come into the league and gives the Texans pretty good depth at LB. Kevin Walter, WR: Walter continues to be underrated by NFL defenses, but I doubt that lasts for long. Walter isn't just a possession receiver, he's the total package. He has proven that he can get deep on defenses if they try and single him up (although he's not your standard "deep threat") and he's as sure-handed on the intermediate and short routes as any WR on the team. The most underestimated value that Walter brings to the team is his willingness to block on the outside during running plays. If you aren't a willing blocker at WR, you can't play under Alex Gibbs and Walter is more than willing to block. Fred Bennett, CB: Bennett got into the doghouse last year and never really got out because he was not showing the consistency and discipline that the team wanted. Personally, I feel like Bennett shows much better instincts than Jacques Reeves, but Reeves and the speed and quickness over Bennett. Bennett is willing to come up and tackle and with Reeves out, he has a chance to prove that he can cover well enough to be the full time starter at CB. If Bennett plays well, it could have an impact on how the Texans handle Dunta Robinson in the offseason. Eric Winston, RT: Winston has flown under the radar of NFL pundits over the last couple of seasons, but that probably ends this year with what could be a his first Pro Bowl trip. Winston's feet have never been in doubt as he's athletic enough to play on the left side (but doesn't because of his shorter arms). Winston is a technically proficient pass protector and his run blocking has gone to the next level thanks to the ability to utilize his athleticism in the zone scheme.

frame. His ability to catch passes out of the backfield as well as help in the return game means that he has the flexibility that teams look for in 3rd RBs. Moats probably makes the team because he isn't a one-trick pony. He's no thoroughbred, but the Texans can put him in the game and he'll be a professional. Steve Slaton, RB: Slaton's burst and top-end speed were his calling card coming into the NFL, but the attributes that have made him such a great fit for the zone scheme have been his vision, decisiveness and toughness running the ball inside. Slaton's ability to catch the ball in space is something that terrifies defensive coordinators because they realize that he's one missed tackle away from big plays. In all honesty, I'm a little worried about Slaton this year because I don't know if he can get as many touches as last year and run as tough as he did last year while still remaining healthy. Eugene Wilson, FS: Wilson was a CB in college but the Patriots immediately transitioned him over to free safety. I think his background in coverage is still evident when you watch him on the field today as he is easily the best safety the Texans have ever had when it comes to diagnosing and making a play on the ball when he gets there. Wilson did a nice job defending deeper passes on the third level and my guess is that Frank Bush will feel comfortable enough with Wilson as a single, high safety to utilize his SS in more blitz packages. Duane Brown, LT: Brown came into camp lighter this year which is a great sign because it shows that he put his mind to losing weight in the offseason and followed through with it. Having the discipline to lose that weight is important because discipline and consistency are two of the things you must have to be successful as an offensive linemen in the zone scheme. Brown has the tools to be a solid pass blocker, but his technique is still very sloppy at times. He still lunges and bends at the waist and his footwork is sloppy more than the Texans would probably like, but those things can be worked on. What I'm excited about is seeing if Brown's loss of weight will lead to a quicker, more agile athlete who can win at the POA.
Tim Bulman, DE/DT: I listed Bulman as a DE and DT Ryan Moats, RB: Moats reminds me of Mewelde Moore because that is the versatility that he offers. While who has made a living in the NFL by being able to do a Bulman isn't the most dynamic pass rusher or explosive little bit of everything. Moats has good quickness through athlete, his the hole and is willing to run inside despite his smallish

LZ’S 20 TEXANS TO WATCH (CONT’D) than some other big-armed QBs. Schaub's confidence has motor is what first blew me away two camps ago and it is the reason that he will play a while in the NFL. Bulman never gives up on plays, and he never goes at anything less than 100% which means that he's always going to get a few sacks each season. I don't consider him much of a pass rushing threat at DE, but I do think that he can be a much bigger factor than some might think at rushing the passer from the inside when he is bumped down to DT and paired up with Antonio Smith (if/when Okoye is on the sidelines).
looked a little shaky at times since taking over as a starter with the Texans, but his understanding of the offense and how to execute it is clearly there. If Schaub can stay healthy and if he continues to improves with his decision making and confidence in the red zone, he could be in contention for a Pro Bowl appearance at the end of this year.
Antonio Smith, DE/DT: Smith has the size at DE that many teams love, but he's just okay as a pass rusher out there — nothing special. What the Arizona Cardinals figured out is that Smith's athleticism and quickness go David Anderson, WR: Anderson might be the most from being average outside to way above average when he outgoing and funny Texan on the entire roster, but don't was bumped down inside to DT on passing situations. sleep on his ability as a wide receiver. What makes Smith is pretty solid against the run as a DE which is Anderson a coach's dream is that he might be small in obviously important to the Texans, but he is getting paid stature, but he's willing to crack-back on DE's on one play to get pressure on the QB and to do that he uses his and then work the middle of the field the next. Anderson quickness off the snap to play in the gaps and he has a has very good hands and gives the Texans added value with wicked spin move that less athletic guards have a hard his ability to return punts. While he's not the most time dealing with. Smith gives the Texans the type of explosive punt returner out there, he takes care of the ball athlete who can be effective with the End/Tackle and and that is the kind of safety net that Gary Kubiak Tackle/End twists which is something that have being wouldn't hesitate to use if he needed it. doing quite a bit of over the last two years. Chris Myers, C: Myers will miss some practice time and Andre Johnson, WR: This one could be the shortest preseason games thanks to his high ankle sprain, but he breakdown of any of the players that I'll be taking a look should be fine once the season starts. Robinson gets dinged as gained 15 pounds this offseason in hopes of combating being "bad in coverage" by some fans, but that isn't really that. While Myers will get pushed around from time to time, he does work well in space and he does a good job of accurate. Kerry Collins made a perfect pass to beat Robinson two years ago in Reliant on a drive that getting to the second level against LBs in the running eventually won the game and many fans remember that. game. I think he'll have a hard time battling Antoine Caldwell by next year, but he's the best center the Texans In reality, personnel people from around the league think he's decent in coverage and one of the great run support have right now for sure. corners in the league. LZ’S 20 TEXANS TO WATCH (CONT’D) other guard spot, the Texans have an pair of guards who and the Texans knew that might be a possibility. It will be interesting to see if DRob is mentally and physically ready to go when the season starts and it will also be interesting to see if his level of play takes a jump with a more accomplished pass rush this season. Amobi Okoye, DT: It is easy to defend Okoye by just throwing the age argument out there. He's young, give him time. I certainly agree that players need to mature mentally and physical, but I also believe that what Okoye showed on film in college should should have been an indicator of what he could do in the early stages of his career Okoye had a good first season, but wasn't great in year two. Okoye is not very sturdy at the point of attack against the run and is not a "stack-and-shed" DT by any stretch. Instead, it is Frank Bush and Bill Kollar's job to find a way to get the former 10th pick of the draft to play up to his draft slot. In all honesty, I'm concerned about Okoye and whether or not he's going to be the impact player I thought he was when he was drafted. If he can live in the gaps, then he might be able to be that guy, but he's got a lot to prove to the fans and the coaches in year three. Jacques Reeves, CB: Reeves certainly doesn't lack the size or speed to be one of the top corners in the league, but making plays on the ball and even locating the ball when it is in the air hasn't been his forte. I know the Texans have been very quick to defend Reeves, and that is fine, but he still has plenty of work to do. I would almost rather see Reeves playing off the WR rather than pressing at the line of scrimmage because he could squat on routes and keep things in front of him. If he got beat down the field on a go route, he has the speed to recover. Chester Pitts, LG: Chester is the rock of the offensive line and he was a nice fit for Alex Gibbs in terms of athleticism and mindset. Pitts gives the Texans a leader on the offensive line who has seen it all in the division and is a good mentor for Duane Brown to play next to. here are some times that Chester gets caught leaning a little bit in pass protection, but he had a good year last year at picking up "games" (twists) that the opposing defenses tried to run on him up front and with Mike Brisiel at the
are solid and dependable for their scheme. Owen Daniels, TE: I know the fans got on Daniels about missing OTAs, but it didn't make any difference to me. Daniels stays in good shape and he's been a very sturdy TE who has been very productive as a Texan. We all know that Daniels is a pretty reliable pass catcher who cut down on his fumbles last year, but his ability to stretch the middle of the field and get behind MLBs in zone coverage has been critical to the success of the offense in terms of chasing teams out of cover 2 and in terms of opening up all aspects of the field for Matt Schaub. Daniels has improved a great deal as a blocker since the beginning of last year and is a willing if not accomplished run blocker. Chris Brown, RB: Brown is an upright runner so he will always have the potential for injuries, but his injuries seem to be more nagging and seem to last longer than other backs. From a talent standpoint, he's a terrific backup for Slaton who offers a nice change of pace while still having the attributes that you look for in a 1-cut runner, but trying to gloss over his injury concerns is a mistake and the Texans have to plan accordingly. Brown gets to his top speed much quicker than most long-legged runners which is why he tends to break off some big runs despite having average top-end speed. If healthy, he's a great addition. If not, the Texans better make sure they are happy with their #3 RB.

FANTASY RANKINGS - QB 1. Drew Brees - Saints - Round 1 Brees threw for over 5,000 yards last year and this year figures to be the same type of season for Brees who is a can't-miss QB from a statistical standpoint. 2. Tom Brady - Patriots - Round 2 Pretty much every draft projection has Brady here, but I could definitely see a scenario where Brady throws for more TDs than Brees. The problem for Brady in terms of his fantasy value is going to be if the Patriots try and protect him early in the season by increasing the rushing attack; however, I doubt that happens. 3. Peyton Manning - Colts - Round 2/3 While I have Brady ranked higher, Peyton Manning is about as safe a choice for fantasy football as you'll find. Only one time over the last ten years has he not thrown for over 4,000 yards and he has NEVER thrown for less than 26 touchdowns in a season. He still has plenty of weapons at his disposal. 4. Aaron Rodgers - Packers - Round 3 I was high on Rodgers as a sleeper last year and I think he has a chance to finish in the top two this season. Rodgers had a terrific year last season and got stronger as the season rolled on. With the Packers deep wide receiving corps and with their aggressive offense, there is no reason to believe that Rodgers won't be as good or better than last year. 5. Kurt Warner - Cardinals - Round 3 Last year, Warner looked like the same QB who was so effective with the Rams and he's got the same weapons again this year. My problem with Warner is that last year was the first time in seven years that he was a healthy, full-time starter. I'm worried about Warner's durability. 6. Philip Rivers - Chargers - Round 4 I can't look past the 34 touchdowns and 4000+ yards passing last year, but I also expect LaDainian Tomlinson to be a bigger factor this year so I have Rivers production dropping a little bit from last year. 7. Donovan McNabb - Eagles - Round 4 McNabb has some very dangerous weapons surrounding him now, but the fact still remains that McNabb hasn't been a QB who cranks out high TD numbers over the last four years. I think that changes this year and I think McNabb is a great value pick this year. 8. Matt Schaub - Texans - Round 5 Despite his bouts with injury in the past, I think taking Schaub in the 5th round is a safe pick from a value standpoint. Schaub's yardage was solid when he played last year and his TDs will go up this year as he is comfortable within Gary Kubiak's offense. 9. Tony Romo - Cowboys - Round 5 I think Romo is way too high in most ratings because
FANTASY RANKINGS - QB
they are working off of the numbers that he's posted the last two years. The problem with that is there is no more Terrell Owens and I'm not sold on the Romo's ability to post those same numbers with Roy Williams as his top WR. I expect the Cowboys to run the ball more this year. 10. Matt Ryan - Falcons - Round 5/6 I doubt Ryan has a season outside of the top 10 based on the fact that his running game is solid, he has an outstanding, young WR and he's added a reliable target over the middle in TE Tony Gonzalez. Ryan is the type of QB you target if you want to get your top two WRs and RBs drafted first. 11. Jay Cutler - Bears - Round 6 I'm a fan of Cutler's, but as an owner you can't ignore questions like who will be his top WR, how much will Matt Forte diminish Cutler's production and how will he perform in a new system? 12. Carson Palmer - Bengals - Round 8 Keep a watchful eye on Palmer and his ankle sprain as that could effect his draft rating. Reports indicate that Palmer's arm strength is back after last season's surgery and despite losing T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Palmer still has WRs on his team who can make plays. Riskiest Quarterbacks 1. Matt Cassel - Chiefs: He looked good throwing to Moss and Welker but let's see if he can step his game up with an inferior team and with the increased pressure of his new contract. I wouldn't touch Cassel until much later in the draft. 2. Kurt Warner - Cardinals: I list him as risky based on how early he'll be drafted versus his history of injuries. Warner isn't very mobile and he'll have to face a schedule that is much tougher this season. 3. Carson Palmer - Bengals: While Palmer has the potential for a nice bounce-back season, he is still dealing with a high ankle sprain and he lacks mobility in the pocket. He also has to face the Steelers and Ravens four different times. Quarterback Sleeper Trent Edwards - Bills: Edwards still has plenty of room for growth, but the Bills upgraded their offensive line through the draft and now he has two very capable WRs to throw to in Owens and Lee Evans. He is worth a late round selection as a backup, but he might end up being more than that for you.

FANTASY RANKINGS - RB 1. Adrian Peterson - Vikings - Top pick 2. Maurice Jones-Drew - Jaguars - Top 4 pick 3. Michael Turner - Falcons - Top 5 pick 4. LaDainian Tomlinson - Chargers - Round 1 5. Matt Forte - Bears - Round 1 6. Steven Jackson - Rams - Round 1 7. Chris Johnson - Titans - Round 1/2 8. DeAngelo Williams - Panthers - Round 2 9. Steve Slaton - Texans - Round 2 10. Brandon Jacobs - Giants - Round 2 11. Frank Gore - 49'ers - Round 2 12. Pierre Thomas - Saints - Round 2/3 13. Darren McFadden - Raiders - Round 2/3 - I don't think you should draft him in the 2nd round simply because that won't be his true value, but I think he will perform like a top 20 fantasy pick this year so you might have to take him earlier than you want to. 14. Marion Barber - Cowboys - Round 2/3 15. Brian Westbrook - Eagles - Round 2/3 16. Ronnie Brown - Dolphins - Round 3 17. Clinton Portis - Redskins - Round 3 18. Kevin Smith - Lions - Round 3/4 19. Larry Johnson - Chiefs - Round 4 - He has been lasting much longer than this in fantasy drafts, but the Chiefs are going to find out quickly that Matt Cassel is not going to be their saviour this year and eventually I think you'll see a reinvigorated Johnson step his game up for the Chiefs. 20. Ryan Grant - Packers - Round 4 21. Derrick Ward - Bucs - Round 4 22. Lendale White - Titans - Round 4/5 23. Joseph Addai - Colts - Round 4/5 24. Jonathan Stewart - Panthers - Round 5 25. Ced Benson - Bengals - Round 5 - Benson is in the best shape of his NFL career and he showed some signs of life last year. With a passing game that
FANTASY RANKINGS - RB
has a chance to keep teams honest, Benson will have the opportunity to be a surprisingly effective RB3 for fantasy owners. Top 10 RBs in PPR (points per reception) Leagues 1. Adrian Peterson - Vikings 2. Maurice Jones-Drew - Jaguars 3. LaDainian Tomlinson - Chargers 4. Matt Forte - Bears 5. Steven Jackson - Rams 6. Michael Turner - Falcons 7. Chris Johnson - Titans 8. Steve Slaton - Texans 9. Frank Gore - 49'ers 10. DeAngelo Williams - Panthers Buyer Beware 1. Steven Jackson - Rams: Hey, I like the guy as a back, but he has no passing game helping out his cause and defenses figure to key on him every game which could grind him down by about week 10. 2. Marion Barber - Cowboys: The only reason I have Barber on this list is because of the depth at RB for the Cowboys. Felix Jones is a terrific big-play RB who will be a factor if healthy and Tashard Choice warrants carries as well. 3. Thomas Jones - Jets: As you can see by my ratings, I don't have Jones in the top 25 because I think Leon Washington and rookie Shonn Green are going to factor into the running game more than the owners of Thomas Jones would like. Running Back Sleeper Donald Brown - Colts: The Colts are going to go with whoever the most effective running back is and if Addai can't stay healthy, Brown will get his chance to flourish in the Colts' offense. Brown is a tough, smart runner who can be plugged right into the starter's role if need be.
LZ’S FIVE INTRIGUING FANTASY PLAYERS 1. Trent Edwards, QB, Bills - Edwards is still a young QB who has yet to reach his potential, but he showed real signs of improvement, performing better earlier in the season. With TO and Lee Evans as his primary WRs, I think it will be impossible for Edwards not to hit 3400 yards and over 20 TDs. I had the same kind of feeling about Aaron Rodgers last year. 2. Darren McFadden, RB, Raiders - The Raiders can run the ball with or without McFadden. We've seen that in the past. However, turf toe robbed him of his running style of much of the season so you can throw last year out. He’s way more explosive than Michael Bush or Justin Fargas so the only question for me is whether McFadden is going to be allowed to be a true featured back this year. 3. Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Steelers - Willie Parker is still an explosive back, but he missed four games last year with injury and he's starting to dance too much behind the line of scrimmage. The
Steelers obviously don't have too much confidence in Parker around the goal line, but Mendenhall should get the goal line carries as well a fair share of totes during the game. He's worth a late round pick. 4. Roy Williams, WR, Cowboys - The diva made his way to Dallas last year but never really had much of an impact on the Cowboys offense. I'm intrigued by the potential of Williams with Romo, but he's never had that one big season where he's proven that he can be a fantasy star. He's got the size, speed and a pretty good QB. Does he want to do what it takes to be a top WR? 5. Matt Cassel, QB, Chiefs - I'm tempted to write off Cassel as a fantasy factor this year since he won't be throwing to Moss and Welker anymore, but Dwayne Bowe has been solid as a top option and Mark Bradley was better than expected. With Todd Haley as the new head coach, look for Cassel to get plenty of three and four WR sets utilize. Now we'll find out if he's the QB the Chiefs think he is.

FANTASY RANKINGS - WR Top 25 WRs (standard scoring) 1. Larry Fitzgerald - Cardinals - Round 1 2. Andre Johnson - Texans - Round 1/2 3. Greg Jennings - Packers - Round 2 - I'm expecting Aaron Rodgers to have a big year so I'm obviously expecting Jennings to continue to be the beneficiary. The Packers WR corps is loaded, but Rodgers knows where to look if he wants results. I have him rated higher than others so you can probably get him late 2nd. 4. Roddy White - Falcons - Round 2/3

Wayne and Dallas Clark will probably be the two top pass catchers for the Colts, but if Manning develops more confidence in Gonzalez earlier in the year, he could end up having a surprisingly strong year. Calvin Johnson - Lions - Round 2 - Johnson will probably be the 3rd WR off the board in most drafts, but I simply can't ignore what I expect to be a potentially bumpy season for him thanks to the issues the Lions have at QB which might include a rookie taking snaps. 7. Steve Smith - Panthers - Round 2/3

Buyer Beware
13. Chad Ochocinco - Bengals - Round 4 - I'm betting on 85 this year. I still think he has plenty left in the tank and I think the return of Carson Palmer along with the departure of T.J. Houshmandzadeh will lead to a much stronger year for Chad this season. 14. Vincent Jackson - Chargers - Round 4/5
1. Brandon Marshall - Broncos: You will have to take him much higher than where he should go which makes it a questionable move. He is trying to get out of Denver and he has way too many issues off the field to just gloss over. On paper, Josh McDaniels offense could be a fit for Marshall, but I'm not sure Kyle Orton is the QB who can get Marshall the ball as much as owners would like. 2. Terrell Owens - Cowboys: Owens still has something left in the tank, but I'm not sure that Lee Evans isn't the better WR in Buffalo. QB Edwards has thrown to Evans in the past so they have a familiarity that isn’t present with Owens. Also, Owens is suffering from a toe injury right now and those injuries have a habit of lingering way longer than expected. 3. Bernard Berrian - Vikings: There’s a thought that Berrian has more value now that Brett Favre has arrived in Minnesota, but count me out of that group. Favre needs to prove that he still has the arm strength to stretch the field. In my opinion, the Vikes rely just as heavily on the run and controlled passing game, meaning Berrian's numbers will be inconsistent from week to week.
15. Dwayne Bowe - Chiefs - Round 4/5 16. T.J. Houshmandzadeh - Seahawks - Round 4/5 17. Roy Williams - Cowboys - Round 4/5 18. Braylon Edwards - Browns - Round 4/5 19. DeSean Jackson - Eagles - Round 5 20. Brandon Marshall - Broncos - Round 5 Marshall will probably go in the 4th round in leagues with sharper owners, but might go as high as the 3rd round with owners working off of last year's numbers alone. Marshall is unhappy in Denver and has a new QB throwing him the ball. Bad combo. 21. Lance Moore - Saints - Round 6 22. Antonio Bryant - Bucs - Round 6 23. Santonio Holmes - Steelers - Round 6/7 24. Jay Cutler at Vanderbilt and the two have already hooked up this year. Remember how Cutler made a fantasy star out of Eddie Royal? It isn't out of the question that he could do the same thing with Bennett who the Bears are quietly very excited about. 3. James Jones - Packers: The Packers go 4-deep at WR and Jones is one of the guys to keep your eye on. Jennings is clearly the top dog and while Donald Driver is the second best WR in GB, it could be time for the talented Jones to make his move and add to his receiving totals this year. 3. Zach Miller - Raiders Buyer Beware Kellen Winslow - Bucs: Winslow is a tremendously competitive player, but he also has a tendency to rub people the wrong way from time to time and we know about his health issues. If he's right, he has the talent to be a top 3 TEs in the league, but I don't know if he can stay healthy and I don't know how he will handle the losses that I expect to mount for Tampa. Sleeper Chris Baker - Patriots: Tom Brady has already shown an affinity for Baker this preseason and while Baker may not rack up hugh reception numbers, I do think he has a chance to end the season with 5 TDs or more thanks to the attention that Randy Moss and Wes Welker will be getting in the redzone.

LZ’S 2009 AFC NORTH BREAKDOWN The epic battles between the Steelers and Ravens should be put into a time capsule and saved for future generations. Wait, “time capsule”? Am I from the 1950’s or something? What I’m trying to say is that those games were some of the most entertaining the NFL produced all season and look for 2009 to be more of the same. LZ’S 2009 AFC SOUTH BREAKDOWN The Tennessee Titans rode the "smash and dash" stylings of RBs Lendale White and Chris Johnson into a division championship in 2008. Well to be fair, it was mostly some Chris Johnson and a whole mess of DT Albert Haynesworth and the defense that got it done. Haynesworth is gone via free agency and the Colts, Jaguars and Texans are on the Titans tracks. The Colts lost head coach Tony Dungy to retirement during the offseason and I wouldn't be so quick to assume that there will be no fallout from Dungy's departure just because QB Indianapolis Colts Peyton Manning 2008 Record: 12-4 2008 ATS: 8-7-1 is a "coach on the 2008 Rankings – OFF: 15, DEF: 11 field". The 2009 SOS: 14 offensive line had issues last year and RB Joseph Addai has had a hard time staying healthy. LZ’S 2009 AFC EAST BREAKDOWN Snap! That was the sound of Tom Brady's knee last year and that was the sound of the AFC East going up for grabs. The Patriots watched QB Matt Cassel improve each week and the team still finished at 11-5, but they missed the playoffs as the lowly Dolphins came from nowhere to win the division. Brady is back and there is a brand new wide receiver in the division. You might have heard of him. The Patriots are hoping to pick up where they left off in 2007 before QB Brady was injured. There is no guarantee that he’ll remain healthy this year so you might look for them to try and New England Patriots 2008 Record: 11-5 run the ball a little 2008 ATS: 9-7 more with Brady 2008 Rankings – OFF: 5, DEF: 10 2009 SOS: 4 under center - at least early in the year. They loaded up on young, defensive talent in the 2009 Draft, but there are still some major concerns in their secondary and they may end up starting a rookie at CB. The Jets got rid of head coach Eric Mangini and brought in Rex Ryan from the Ravens so don't
expect the construct of the defense to change, but their performance needs to. New ILB Bart Scott will help set the tone for a defense that has the potential to get after you. Offensively, however, they might regress with a rookie Mark Sanchez under center. The Dolphins played way better than anyone expected, but let's look at this realistically. Only 2 of last year’s 11 wins came against teams who were better than 8-8. This year things tighten up as they have the toughest schedule in football. AFC WEST
LZ’S 2009 AFC WEST BREAKDOWN The AFC West was an atrocity last year and defense seemed to be optional each week. This year things should get better as the Chargers are healthy (for now) and the Chiefs traded for QB Matt Cassel who they hope will work wonders under new head coach Todd Haley. The Raiders look to be trending up while the Broncos are in for a rough season.
combination of Dwayne Bowe and Mark Bradley might be a tad underrated, but they have to get more consistency from Larry Johnson and the running game. The addition of veteran LBs Zach Thomas and Mike Vrabel will pay off down the road as the young players learn how to approach the game from these two pros.
The Chargers were basically in the same boat as the Jacksonville Jaguars last season but they were fortunate enough to be in a weak division rather than a division like the AFC South. QB Philip Rivers took a big step forward last year but LaDainian Tomlinson never looked like his dominant self thanks to an injured toe. LZ’S 2009 NFC NORTH BREAKDOWN Long known as a smash-mouth division, the NFC North actually boasts two of the more prolific quarterbacks from last year in Jay Cutler and Aaron Rodgers, as well as two of the NFL’s biggest gamebreakers - Adrian Peterson and Calvin Johnson. The Bears got better by adding Cutler and the Vikings are hoping for better QB play as well. The Packers finished 6-10 last year but they were a few bad bounces from being in the playoffs. While the Bears gave up two first rounders as part of their trade for Cutler, they believe they got off cheap. The Bears offense should be fairly potent with Matt Forte's running style leading the way, but their defense has become a concern. They must get better play from their defensive front and smarter play from their secondary. The Vikings have added the human soap opera known as Brett Favre, but Vikings players may not be buying the act. Furthermore, he might not be a good enough upgrade to the passing game to make the difference the Vikings need in Minnesota Vikings 2008 Record: 10-6 their quest for a 2008 ATS: 6-10 Super Bowl. Things couldn't get any lower for the Lions after their win-less 2008 campaign. WR Calvin Johnson is a star for the Lions but I wouldn't be surprised to see RB Kevin Smith show up with a solid 2009. LZ’S 2009 NFC SOUTH BREAKDOWN The Atlanta Falcons came from nowhere thanks to rookie QB Matt Ryan who handled the season with as much cool as could possibly expected. On paper, the Panthers look like a better team than the Falcons, but consistency has been an issue for the Panthers. The Saints are consistently one of the top performing offenses in the league and one of the softest defenses in the league. The Bucs have the defense, but do they have a QB ready to win? The Panthers running game was devastating last year but even more devastating in the playoffs was the horrible play of QB Jake Delhomme. They still have a solid offensive line and a terrific running game, but Delhomme needs a better year and another WR must step up. Reggie Bush gets the hype but the Saints can't win the division without guys like DT Sedrick Ellis and MLB Jonathan Vilma having big seasons. The Falcons flew under the radar for almost the entire season in 2008 thanks to a belief that they would eventually fail. It didn't happen. QB Ryan had tons

The Giants showed that they could impose their will with their ground attack while the Eagles relied more heavily on their defense instead of just Donovan McNabb's arm. The Cowboys never hit their stride and will get their chance to prove them can be better without Terrell Owens. The Redskins offense fizzled last year, but the additon of DT Albert Haynesworth should scare everyone in the division. The Seahawks should bounce back this year and challenge the Cards for a division title while the Rams still have a long, long way to go. Perhaps no player in the nation is as adept at rushing the QB as Kindle. But, the rest of the defense has speed and is growing a nasty attitude by the day. LB Roddrick Muckelroy must play up to his potential to make the defense whole, but if he does, Texas has a chance to have a 2005-like season.

Championship Game will take place. Perfect, right?
McCoy has put himself on a level with the great VY due to his late game heroics and ability to bring the Horns back from behind. He was beyond magnificent and was my selection for the Heisman Trophy in 2008. TEXAS SCHEDULE 2009
Quite simply, he was the most important player for his team. Without him, the Horns wouldn’t have won ten games, much less the 12 games it did win in 2008.

Although a tricky Oklahoma State visit awaits, the Horns season comes down to one trip to Dallas...not unlike many other years. Beat OU and, well, this year will be different, trust me - the mighty Texas Longhorns won’t get hosed two years in a row. Then, it’s on to Pasadena to face the Florida Gators. Long Live 2005!!! Errr, 2009.
La. Monroe @ Wyoming Revenge, Texas Tech anyone? UTEP Wait, who am I BYE kidding? Colorado Oklahoma (Dallas) @ Missouri @ Oklahoma State UCF @ Baylor Kansas @Texas A&M (Thursday)
Player to Watch: LT Adam Ulatoski - the Longhorns have put plenty of linemen in the pros, including a number of first rounders. Ulatoski may not be a first rounder at the onset of this season, but with a strong season on the edge, he’s got a chance to be a first day pick in April 2010. He’s not the most physical candidate, but he’s been out on an island his entire career. Meaning? Meaning he’s been blocking explosive edge rushers by himself for years. A much coveted trait by NFL personnel people.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS I can’t wait to see the Horns roll through the Big 12 and roll into Pasadena...as an underdog. I love to watch the gunslinging McCoy when no one thinks he has a chance to win a game. With the whole shootin’ match on the line, it’ll be #12 in his finest hour. As long as the defense continues in lock step with Coach Boom!, the Horns should be in Pasadena.

OKLAHOMA 2009 PREVIEW
2008: 12-2, 8-1 LOST TO FLORIDA BCS NAT’L GAME
THE SOONERS ARE BACK...DEAL WITH IT In some sense, the Sooners don’t want your pity. They don’t want you to feel sorry for them. They don’t need to hear excuses. But, there are those ‘people’ who want OU, well, gone. 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008 all ended in bowl game disasters, The Skinny: three of which Offense: 5 starters returning were losses in the Defense: 8 starters returning National Champ. 2008 Final Stats game. 4,720 yards and 50 TDs, leading the Sooners offense to five straight games of 58 points or more. TE Jermaine Gresham will be Bradford’s main weapon through the air, while RBs DeMarco Murray and Chris Brown will provide the 1-2 punch on the ground. But, the question will be from right tackle to left guard. Four starters must be replaced, while former RT Trent Williams moves over the left side. No team has ever won a BCS National Championship game with a 100% revamped offensive line.
#3
On offense, QB Sam Bradford, excuse me, Heisman Trophy winning QB, Sam Bradford returns after one of the most statistically dominant seasons in college football history. He threw for
However, the defensive line is the complete opposite. All of the hosses return, including All-American candidate DT (3 technique) Gerald McCoy. The key on defense, though, is going to be at the mike linebacker position - can Ryan Reynolds return and be the glue holding this defense together? With Mike Balogun’s eligiblity in question, it’s become even more of an issue. Balogun filled in admirably late in the 2008 season, but Reynolds was a difference maker before going down against Texas. The safeties are green, but the corners, Brian Jackson and Dominique Franks can play.
OKLAHOMA SCHEDULE 2009 Not a bad way to start off the season. Arguably, the best two pure passers in the nation (Bradford and Max Hall) show Tony Romo how it’s done
Think this one isn’t circled in crimson on Bob Stoops’ calendar? 45-35 isn’t going to be forgotten any time soon.

Player to Watch: RB DeMarco Murray - there were a few who thought that the loss of Murray wouldn’t effect the Sooners THAT much in the National Championship game. Um, looks like I was, well, not absolutely 100% wrong, but the Sooners could’ve used him. But, there’s the rub, so to speak, Murray isn’t a guy who can stay healthy. Heck, he’s already been hurt during fall camp. He has the speed, the burst, the size and the explosiveness, but he hasn’t finished either of the last two seasons. If he could stay healthy in 2009... If Oklahoma State upsets Texas in October, then Bedlam could be for more than just state bragging rights.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS Not much has really changed in Big 12 South football. The Longhorns are good. The Sooners are good. The two powers will meet in Dallas in October for the whole kit and kaboodle. The Sooners won’t get help from a “3rd team” this year, but a BCS bowl game should still keep the faithful happy. As long as the Sooners finally win one.

USC 2009 PREVIEW
2008: 12-1, 8-1 BEAT PENN STATE IN ROSE BOWL
REBUILDING? NAH, AT USC IT’S CALLED RELOADING When most programs across the nation lose three first round draft picks and eight defensive starters, it’s time to rebuild. Not at USC...in the Land of Troy, it’s called reloading. The Trojans are going to have plenty of ‘rookies’ on the The Skinny: field. Talented rookies, but first Offense: 8 starters returning year starters, Defense: 3 starters returning nonetheless, 2008 Final Stats especially on Rushing offense: 194.9 ypg, 22nd the defensive Passing offense: 259.9 ypg, 22nd side of the football. Total offense: 454.7 ypg, 11th Scoring offense: 37.5 ppg, 14th
Taylor Mays roams the middle of the field. Mays decided to return to USC for his senior year after finishing with 53 tackles in 2008. The offense has plenty of firepower, but the question of who pulls the trigger is still unanswered. Aaron Corp’s name was in the starter position currently, but hot-shot 5 star recruit Matt Barkley has stolen the job away from an injured Corp during camp.

Luckily, he won’t have to worry about what’s behind him as All-American candidate safety Rushing Defense: 87.4 ypg, 5th
USC SCHEDULE 2009 No matter who is playing QB, this will be the stiffest test of all. In Columbus? One year after a 35-3 debacle? Ouch!

Barkley will be protected and has weapons at his disposal. The offensive line returns two stars, Kris O’Dowd and Jeff Byers although O’Dowd went down early in camp. He should return, but as of today, he’ll probably be out until the Washington game. In addition, a slew of offensive skill players are back, namely All Pac-10 receiver Damian Williams. The offense has the potential to score 40 on a regular basis...if Barkley’s play is even adequate. The schedule is a beast, including road trips to Ohio State, Cal, Notre Dame and Oregon. I expect them to lose at Ohio State, but run the table to the Rose Bowl...yet again.
San Jose State @ Ohio State @ Washington Washington St. Cal BYE @ Notre Dame Oregon State @ Oregon @ Arizona St. Stanford BYE UCLA Arizona
Player to Watch: RB/WR Joe McKnight - most of the high profile recruits that have graced the USC campus have become stars. But, McKnight has been a disappointment in his two years at USC. Injuries and a true lack of production have dogged Louisiana’s finest for two years. He’s got the open field skills to be a threat every time he touches the ball. Explosively smooth, McKnight can be USC’s valuable weapon in LA, but he’s shown he can also disappear just as quickly. The last three games against the Domers have been ugly Trojan blowouts, but this is a different Notre Dame team. Well, that’s what they’ve got everybody believing in South Bend.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS The Trojans had the best defense in the nation last year, a top five NFL draftee at quarterback and couldn’t win a national championship. The defense isn’t nearly as good, especially the front 7, and the quarterback is true freshman. If talent overrides experience, there’s a chance USC is playing for it all. But, the safe bet is another Rose Bowl trip for ‘SC.

ALABAMA 2009 PREVIEW
2008: 12-2, 8-1 LOST TO UTAH IN SUGAR BOWL
REMEMBER THE UTES! The formula, so to speak, for the Tide in 2008 was pretty easy to figure out. Run the ball physically. Capitalize on opponent’s mistakes. Dominate defensively. 12 wins in a row proved the formula worked. And, then, in the Sugar Bowl, The Skinny: Utah also proved the formula worked Offense: 4 starters returning when it hit Defense: 9 starters returning Alabama square 2008 Final Stats between the Rushing offense: 184.6 ypg, 30th eyes in one of Passing offense: 171.1 ypg, 97th the most disappointing Total offense: 355.8 ypg, 63rd losses in Scoring offense: 30.1 ppg, 35th recent Rushing Defense: 74.1 ypg, 2nd Alabama Passing Defense: 189.4 ypg, 30th memory. Total Defense: 263.5 ypg, 3rd But, the loss didn’t dissipate the Scoring Defense: 14.3 ppg, 7th progress Nick Saban’s squad has made since he took over in 2007. The story for this 2009 team isn’t going to change all that much. The focus is on the defensive side of
the ball, where the Tide has four, perhaps five, first team All-SEC candidates. DT Terrence Cody set the tone for the entire season in the opening game against Clemson and he returns to tie up two, three and even four blockers in the middle. LB Rolando McClain is an All-American candidate, while sophomore Dont’a Hightower could be the next great Alabama linebacker. Offensively, I don’t think Alabama has ever had a weapon like WR Julio Jones. His numbers may have been a shade under other freshmen stars, but he’s the most physically dominant receiver in the nation and will be QB Greg McElroy’s go-to guy throughout the season.
#5
ALABAMA SCHEDULE 2009 Clemson was the ACC’s pre-season flavor of the year in 2008. Boom, roasted. Guess who it is this year? Nice guess.
Hotty Toddy, good gosh almighty - it’s the first SEC ‘test’ of the season, in Oxford. The upstart Rebels will be loaded and ready for the Tide, attempting to avenge last year’s three point loss in T’loosa. This one could be the SEC game of the year.
But, the Tide won’t let McElroy throw 25 times a game without a definitive run game safety net. Bruising power back Mark Ingram will pair with hot-shot rookie Trent Richardson to form one of the best running back combinations in the nation. However, with no Andre Smith up front and only two starters returning, the offensive line will be under the microscope early, especially facing the likes of Virginia Tech in the opener. G Mike Johnson is one of the nation’s best guards.

Player to Watch: LB Rolando McClain it’s difficult to gauge how good McClain truly is. Now, don’t get me wrong, he’s good, real good. He’s a physically gifted specimen who hits like a mack truck and flies sideline to sideline. But, it was evident how wellprotected he was by Terrence Cody and the ‘Bama defensive line. Watch McClain in the team’s 12 wins - he ran unabated to the ball all game long. But if you truly want to know how good he is, look at the teams that beat Alabama and watch what they did. Both Utah and Florida took its offense outside of the hashes and #25 was nullified. As such, McClain is the ultimate key to the season for the Tide. Auburn isn’t quite the team it was when it won six in a row over ‘Bama, but on the Plains, Bama hasn’t won in a good while.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS Not many thought Alabama was a ready-for-prime-time player in 2008. However, the Tide’s 12-0 run and subsequent Sugar Bowl loss to Utah may have been the best thing for the 2009 team. Florida’s just too good to beat for the SEC championship, but the Tide should win the West again...if they can knock off LSU and Ole Miss. Wow, that’s not a cake walk.

2008: 8-5, 3-5 BEAT GA. TECH IN CHICK-FIL-A BOWL
A TEAM ON A MISSION? YES SIR! FORGET 2008. After three years of ten plus wins, three bowl wins and a national championship, you’d think head coach Les Miles had built up enough cache to withstand an eight win season. LSU SCHEDULE 2009 Anyone want Tebow’s cell phone number for this one? Here you go...1 888 NTL CHMP.
LSU’s last trip to Tuscaloosa should’ve been an L, but the Tide gave one to LSU, which paved the way for a national title for the Tigers. Alabama isn’t going to give one away this time...not with a title at hand.
Without question, Jefferson is the key to the season for the Tigers. LSU averaged 34.5 points when Jefferson was in the lineup. As long as he doesn’t throw pick...okay, I’ll stop. He does have some wicked talent around him. RB Charles Scott is perhaps the best power back in the nation and he’ll run behind one of the best run blocking tackles in the nation Ciron Black. WR Brandon LaFell decided to return for his senior season and should be All-SEC. Add in the talents of true freshman Russell Shepard (see box below) and this offense is as diverse as it’s ever been.
#6
Whereas most teams around the nation would Scoring Defense: 24.2 ppg, 56th celebrate eight wins, at LSU, the Tigers are looking to rid themselves of the stench of the 2008 season, characterized by giving away games. The weekly pick sixes forced Miles to finally put freshman Total Defense: 325.5 ypg, 32nd
Jordan Jefferson under center and the offense was at its best when he took over.
Defensively, the biggest addition was John Chavis, former Tennessee defensive coordinator. Although Tennessee typically underachieved under Phil Fulmer, Chavis’ defenses were stout and physical, two aspects, LSU must hang its hat on. The defensive line lacks star power, for the most part, but is talented nonetheless, led by DE Rahim Alem. The secondary must cover and tackle MUCH better than last year. Or it’s a track meet.

Player to Watch: QB/RB/AP Russell Shepard - there was no more dynamic player at the high school level in 2008 than Shepard. Although he’s not ready to be an effective starting QB in the SEC, he’s the perfect chess piece for offensive coordinator Gary Crowton. Expect Shepard to line up in nearly every position that doesn’t end in “linemen”. And, in so doing, preparation for the LSU offense just became exponentially that much more difficult. He’ll have a 2006 Tebowlike impact in 2009. It didn’t sit well with the Purple and Gold faithful when Ole Miss came into Baton Rouge and kicked LSU’s butt last season.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS LSU may be off the radar for many people this season due to the way it tanked in 2008. But, if QB Jefferson can throw to the receivers in the purple and gold 7-5 can easily turn into 10-2. It won’t be easy, and it never is in the SEC, but lose to Florida, split with Alabama and Ole Miss, win at Georgia and that’s 10 wins. See, that was easy.

2008: 11-2, 7-1 LOST TO USC ROSE BOWL
JOE KNOWS CHAMPIONSHIPS AND HE COULD GET HIS SECOND IN A ROW IN 2009 If the Nittany Lions shocked the college football world in 2008, there’s no chance in Hades that’ll it happen again. The shocking part, I mean. In other words, they won’t be sneaking up on anyone in 2009? Exactly. QB Daryll Clark, who should be embarking on his third year as starter, returns for his second year as the leader of the offense. He was magnificent early in the season, tapered off as the year progressed but had a strong second half in the Rose Bowl. He’ll be without his receiver “security blanket” as Jordan Norwood, Deon Butler and Derrick Williams are all collecting paychecks in the NFL. The only good news is that the current receiving corps is ultratalented, just green and inexperienced. Plus, RB Evan Royster returns to carry the run game load behind an offensive line led by JR Stefen Wisniewski, who’s a lock for All-Big Ten status at the end of the season.
championship game.
Scoring Defense: 14.4 ppg, 8th
Now, the argument as to whether they deserved said trip or not was squelched by Iowa 24-23 and then resoundingly trumped by USC in the Rose Bowl, a game that wasn’t even near as close as the 14 point spread would indicate.
However, the story of the 2009 Nittany Lions is the same as it’s been for many years in Paterno’s career - a stellar defense. It’s a unit that had a few doors open up due to suspension and injury. Linebacker Sean Lee’s injury forced Navorro Bowman into the starting lineup. Now, with Lee returning alongside Bowman, the Nittany Lions have one of the better 1-2 linebacker duos in the country. The secondary is barren, but won’t be tested until the fifth game of the season. And, at that point, it should be ready to compete.
PENN STATE SCHEDULE 2009 The Nittany Lions lone loss last season kept them out of the national championship game in Miami. That loss was to Iowa in Iowa City. Expect a vengeful White Out for this one
This isn’t your older brother’s Michigan squad. But, in late October after seven games, there’s no telling where Michigan is going to be by game eight, making them ultra-dangerous.

Player to Watch - LB Sean Lee - two years ago, the best linebacker on the roster was Lee, not his more ballyhooed counterpart Dan Connor. But, after deciding to stay for his senior year, Lee tore up his knee in the 2008 spring game and sat out all of last season. Now, a year older, a year rustier but perhaps a year wiser, Lee returns to the middle of the defense. And, now he has some help, namely LB Navorro Bowman, that is if Bowman keeps his nose clean. Lee is a tackling machine and will be the tone-setter for one the top defenses in the nation. You know it. I know it. They know it. This is the Big Ten Championship game for all the marbles! Simple as that
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS The Nittany Lions are a lock to win ten games. I’d even push it to 11 games, but that would be assuming Temple is a walk-over. All kidding aside, the season comes down to one game Ohio State, presumably at night in Happy Valley. Beat OSU and the Nittany Lions are going back out to Pasadena, just this time it won’t be for the Rose Bowl. It’s BCS title time!

OKLAHOMA STATE 2009 PREVIEW
2008: 9-4, 5-3 LOST TO OREGON HOLIDAY BOWL
EXIT TEXAS TECH, ENTER OKLAHOMA STATE The Big 12 South may be the most competitive division/conference in college football in 2009. Oh wait, it was that way in 2008 and the tiebreaker was some “BCS crap” for the three 11-1 teams. Well, I write that here for Oklahoma State The Skinny: because there’s a good chance that Offense: 8 starters returning Oklahoma State Defense: 6 starters returning becomes that 2008 Final Stats “third team” Rushing offense: 245.5 ypg, 8th in the Big 12 Passing offense: 242.2 ypg, 38th South as Texas Tech Total offense: 487.7 ypg, 6th was last Scoring offense: 40.8 ppg, 9th season. Rushing Defense: 137.8 ypg, 52nd
The ability to run the football (i.e winning with a diverse offense) and an improving defense differentiates Oklahoma State in 2009 and Texas Tech in 2008. That diverse offense features the best set of “Triplets” in the nation - QB Zac Robinson, RB Kendall Hunter and WR Dez Bryant. As long as this talented trio stays healthy, the Cowboy offense is going to rack up 40+ points a game. The explosive Bryant changes games in a heartbeat, while the powerful Hunter is an absolute dynamo on the ground. Robinson takes a backseat to no one in the Big 12 QB pecking order. LT Russell Okung is one of the best LTs in the nation. To beat this team, you’d better score more than 40.

Passing Defense: 267.7 ypg, 109th
Starting from a very similar place as Tech last year, Scoring Defense: 28.1 ppg, 76th the Cowboys are in much the same position as the Red Raiders: win them all because the BCS doesn’t like you as much as it does UT and OU. But, OSU is a brick house to Tech’s straw house, in some sense. Total Defense: 405.5 ypg, 93rd
OKLAHOMA ST. SCHEDULE 2009 Sept. 5 Payback is a beyotch and the September 12 Cowboys have been sitting on this one for two years. September 19 Win this one and national September 26 title talk will start in earnest. October 3 October 10 If there was ever a time October 17 when the Cowboys needed to finally ‘finish’ one over October 24 Texas, this has to be the October 31 year. After years of near misses and botched leads, November 7 the Cowboys can vault into November 14 the top three, presumably, by finally taking care of business November 21 in Stillwater. Nov. 28
The story for the defense this season is a tremendous linebacking corps - Andre Sexton, Orie Lemon and Patrick Levine - and new defensive coordinator Bill Young. The return all three linebackers provides leadership on the field, but Young’s presence provides the leadership from the sideline that head coach Mike Gundy has sought for years.
Georgia Houston Rice Grambling BYE @ Texas A&M Missouri @ Baylor Texas @ Iowa State Texas Tech Colorado @ Oklahoma
Player to Watch - LB Andre Sexton - in his first year at outside linebacker, after two seasons at safety, Sexton led the Cowboys with 100 tackles. He’s more of a safety size-wise, but he’s a play maker who’ll tattoo a ball carrier. In new defensive coordinator Bill Young’s scheme, expect Sexton to be all over the place - rushing the QB to get pressure, running down backs and playing near the line of scrimmage. He can set the tone for this defense with his physical play and hard hitting ability. What if...OSU knocks off Georgia in the opener, finally takes out Texas and travels to Norman 11-0? Bedlam won’t aptly describe the madness that will ensue if both teams are 11-0.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS I could honestly see this as a Dream Season in Stillwater. The Cowboys are better, on paper of course, than Georgia. Then beat a Texas team that edged OSU 28-24 last year in Austin. Then, Bedlam. 11-0 vs 11-0 Bedlam. Honestly, if there’s a football god, and I think there’s one, uh, how else...never mind, this’ll happen. Can Oklahoma State live the dream?

OHIO STATE 2009 PREVIEW
2008: 10-3, 7-1 LOST TO TEXAS IN FIESTA BOWL
NOW READY FOR PRIME TIME, IT’S TERRELLE’S TIME TO SHINE Last year, head coach Jim Tressel was a lot like a kid on Christmas, he couldn’t wait to use his new Christmas toy. It took him all of two games to take out his experienced senior starter Todd Boeckman and replace him with The Skinny: 2008’s number one recruit Terrelle Offense: 4 starters returning Pryor. Now, that Defense: 8 starters returning move takes some 2008 Final Stats guts and it Rushing offense: 192.5 ypg, 24th may have Passing offense: 150.2 ypg, 105th cost the Buckeyes a Total offense: 342.7 ypg, 76th legitimate Scoring offense: 27.6 ppg, 45th shot at the Rushing Defense: 110.2 ypg, 18th 2008 Big Ten Passing Defense: 183.5 ypg, 25th title. But, Total Defense: 293.8 ypg, 14th ultimately, it may have saved the Scoring Defense: 13.9 ppg, 6th 2009 season before it even began.
He’ll need that tool chest to help lead an offense that is void of the experience it had last season. Receivers Brian Hartline and Brian Robiskie were the lifeblood of the receiving corps for the last two seasons, but must be replaced in 2009. However, replacing skill players isn’t a major concern at a place like Ohio State. The good news on this side of the ball is that three of the four returning starters are offensive linemen - Jim Cordle, Michael Brewster and Bryant Browning. With that experienced front, expect the running game to be at the forefront yet again, whether it’s Dan Herron, Brandon Saine or true freshman Jamaal Berry toting the mail.
#9
With ten starts under his belt, a full month of bowl practice and an entire spring, Pryor now has, well, let’s just say his tool chest is a little more plentiful.
In contrast to the offense, the defense loses only three starters, however, two of those starters were multi-year All-Americans - James Laurinaitis and Malcolm Jenkins. The front four should wreak havoc with all four starters returning, including Thaddeus Gibson at DE, who led the team with five sacks. The secondary is led by one of the Big Ten’s best defenders Kurt Coleman at safety and this unit might be the strength of the defense with three returning starters.
OHIO STATE SCHEDULE 2009 The Buckeyes haven’t won a big-time non-conference game since the 2003 Fiesta Bowl. As such, don’t be surprised if the Bucks are an underdog in this one.
Don’t let anyone tell you there isn’t a Big 10 Conference championship game. This is it. Bucks and Nits for the Big 10 title and an outside chance at the BCS national championship game.

Player to Watch - C Michael Brewster - the sophomore took over as a true freshman as the leader in the Buckeyes offensive line. Although the Bucks return two other offensive linemen, Brewster is the only one returning to the same position he ended the season. Throughout the year, Brewster’s confidence grew and grew and his ability to control the middle of the Bucks line will be the X factor for an offense still emerging under QB Pryor’s leadership. If OSU upsets USC and beats Penn State on the road, Michigan is the only roadblock on the way to the BCS national champ. game. Could the Wolverines end the dream in AA?
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS The drop-off isn’t going to happen, now that Pryor has a full season, a month of bowl practices and a full spring under his belt. He’s the best player in the Big 10, point blank, end of story. The Bucks lost twice last year in regular season - USC and Penn State. Pryor is motivated to not let either one of them beat OSU again, especially PSU in his backyard.

OLE MISS 2009 PREVIEW
2008: 9-4, 5-3 BEAT TEXAS TECH IN COTTON BOWL
NO LONGER THE HUNTER, THE REBELS WILL BE THE HUNTED IN 2009 After a wild first season in Oxford, head coach Houston Nutt is running up against an opponent tougher than any he and the Rebels will face this season: expectations. A win over national champion Florida The Skinny: on the road, five straight seasonOffense: 7 starters returning ending wins and a Defense: 8 starters returning Cotton Bowl 2008 Final Stats trophy Rushing offense: 186.5 ypg, 28th will Passing offense: 221.2 ypg, 53rd heighten those Total offense: 407.6 ypg, 29th Scoring offense: 32.1 ppg, 28th Rushing Defense: 85.5 ypg, 4th
The aforementioned quarterback is former Texas transfer Jevan Snead. Once he had his feet under him, the Ole Miss offense took things to a different level. The Rebels averaged over 45 points per game for the last four games of the 2008 season, including the Cotton Bowl win over Texas Tech. Snead threw for 2,762 yards and had a 2:1 TD to interception ratio in his first full year as a starter. The run game is versatile with Dexter McCluster (see below) taking Wild Rebel snaps and a traditional power game led by RB Brandon Bolden. In the Cotton Bowl he burst on the scene and took over this spring. With powerful All-SEC OT John Jerry leading the way, the run game can take over the game at any time.

expectations. Throw in (finally) an experienced Scoring Defense: 19.0 ppg, 20th quarterback and fourteen other starters and the hype is been taken to the proverbial next level, perhaps even to a point of being overwhelming. As such, is ‘expectation’ the toughest opponent for the Rebels this season? Perhaps. Total Defense: 307.2 ypg, 19th
Defensively, the only true questions are whether DT Ted Laurent can be a poor man’s Peria Jerry and whether DE Greg Hardy can “keep it together” for a full season. Laurent has the potential to be another Jerry, but filling those huge shoes is a key to the defense’s success. Hardy has been either hurt (car accident this summer as well) or a pain in the backside for the Ole Miss coaches. He has first round ability and sixth round baggage.
OLE MISS SCHEDULE 2009 Rebel fans will tell you Ole Miss ran out of time last year or it would’ve upset Alabama in 2008. This is the biggest game of the SEC season to this point...expect Gameday and a rowdy bunch of Ole Miss fans.
The most difficult road game is against a refurbished Auburn team. Survive the early jaunts to South Carolina and Vanderbilt, this is the only true road test the rest of the year.

Player to Watch - RB/WR Dexter McCluster - every team craves a player like McCluster. Equal parts running back and receiver, he’s one of the most dangerous players in the nation in the open field. Once Houston Nutt got a hold of this offense and put McCluster in the Wild Rebel, he became one of the most valuable weapons in the SEC. Thanks to Nutt, #22 has gone from being a “nice, little” player to “we better know where he lines up on every play” player. His effect on the game is felt every time he lines up on offense. The Tigers are going to want revenge. The Rebels are looking for respect. What makes a team more desperate?
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS Flavor of the month or that top ten team destined to fall faster than a lead balloon? That is the question. Ole Miss has every scheduling advantage it could possibly want - one tough road tilt, six of the last eight at home and the two toughest West contenders - LSU and ‘Bama coming to Oxford. But, do YOU believe? With Snead under center, I do...sort of.

BOISE STATE 2009 PREVIEW
2008: 12-1, 8-0 LOST TO TCU POINSETTIA BOWL
IS 2009 ANOTHER BCS BOWL SEASON FOR THE BRONCOS? SHOULD BE. Thanks to Utah’s undefeated season in the MWC in 2008, the Broncos were forced to spend the holidays with a Poinsettia, instead of bathed in Sugar. Considering the purple and black TCU buzzsaw the Broncos ran into last December, it The Skinny: was probably a blessing in disguise Offense: 6 starters returning that Boise State Defense: 5 starters returning headed to San 2008 Final Stats Diego Rushing offense: 152.3 ypg, 54th and not Passing offense: 288.5 ypg, 13th New Orleans. Total offense: 440.9 ypg, 18th Scoring offense: 37.6 ppg, 12th
One of the main reasons why the Broncos will even sniffof the top ten is returning sophomore QB Kellen Moore. There might be 119 Division 1A quarterbacks with a better arm, but very few have the moxie, toughness and smarts like the Broncos signal caller. He threw for 3,486 yards and 25 touchdowns in his freshman season. Yes, his freshman season. RB Ian Johnson finally graduated, but that might not be great news for the rest of the WAC. Jeremy Avery (see below) and D.J. Harper have the explosiveness and burst that Johnson lacked. And, Johnson was pretty dadgum good.

But, with Rushing Defense: 118.0 ypg, 22nd Utah Passing Defense: 190.2 ypg, 34th looking to replace Total Defense: 308.2 ypg, 20th its starting quarterback, TCU Scoring Defense: 12.6 ppg, 3rd having to traverse a difficult slate and Boise State having to win only one tough game, Chris Petersen’s Broncos are the chalk to take the “non-BCS” mantel to the BCS bowls in January.
Defensively, the Broncos have changed to a 4-2-5 on defense, but that means of the secondary, the best unit on the defense. CB Kyle Wilson is an All-American who could play on any team in the nation. He had five picks last year and won’t even approach that number this season as teams will throw away from him throughout the season. S Jeron Johnson and George Iloka are playmakers who can change the complexion of any game with their speed and hitting ability, especially Johnson. The defensive front has some work to do, but will be ultra-quick, led by All-WAC DE Ryan Winterswyk.
BOISE STATE SCHEDULE 2009 Considering how weak the rest of the schedule is, the Broncos can make plans for a BCS game on Sept. 4 after a BSU win or plan for the Humanitarian Bowl after a loss.
Fresno State isn’t like Fresno State in the past, but Pat Hill’s ‘Dogs would love to end any hope of Boise State going to another BCS game.

Oregon (Thurs.) Miami (OH) @ Fresno St (Fr.) @ Bowling Green UC Davis @ Tulsa (Wed.) @ Hawaii San Jose State @ La. Tech (Fri.) Idaho @ Utah State (Fri.) Nevada (Fri.) New Mexico St.
Player to Watch - RB Jeremy Avery Although Ian Johnson leaves Boise State as the most decorated Bronco of alltime, the expected void is, well, not really a void at all. In fact, the explosiveness and burst that Avery possesses will provide a new dimension for this Bronco offense. Avery was good enough in 2008 to supplant Johnson for significant carries and now that he’s the featured back, expect the offense to open up a bit. Not that 2008’s unit was a stodgy conservative bunch, but with Avery, it’s a whole new ball game. I think the only team that can give Boise State any problems down the stretch is the Colin Kaepernick led Wolf Pack.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS The college football season is such a long grind. Start with two-a-days in early August and finish with a bowl, presumably in early January. That all said, the Broncos will know their post-season destination the morning after the Oregon opener. Win and it’s back to a BCS bowl. Lose and it’ll stay home for the Humanitarian Bowl. It’s that simple for Pete’s gang.

VIRGINIA TECH 2009 PREVIEW
2008: 10-4, 6-3 BEAT CINCINNATI ORANGE BOWL
ONE YEAR OLDER, ONE YEAR BETTER, ONE MORE ACC CHAMPIONSHIP Even with the success that Virginia Tech has had under Frank Beamer, he has had to come to the defense of his offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring more than he probably wants to admit. Critics have wanted The Skinny: Stinespring to put away the Offense: 9 starters returning conservative hat Defense: 7 starters returning and put on the 2008 Final Stats aggressive Rushing offense: 174.4 ypg, 35th offensive Passing offense: 129.1 ypg, 111st fedora. offensive starters returning and one of the most dynamic players in the ACC - QB Tyrod Taylor. If the Hokies can’t put pressure on opposing defenses this season, then the criticism is probably fair. Taylor is the key. After being “redshirted” for one game, mind you, he took over the offense and he led the Hokies to the 2008 ACC championship. But, ask him and he’ll admit that he often didn’t have a clue what he, or the unit, was doing. But, this year as the entrenched number one, he should have a strong season. The loss of powerful RB Darren Evans is a serious gut punch for this offense but if true freshman David Wilson lives up to the press clippings, the offense should still fare well.
#12
Well that’s not the case in 2009. For the first time in quite some time, the Hokies have a wealth of VIRGINIA TECH SCHEDULE 2009 Sept. 5 Last year, Frank Beamer had decided to redshirt QB September 12 Tyrod Taylor for the opener September 19 a loss to East Carolina. VT lost. Only guarantee for September 26 this year...#5 will be under October 3 center barring injury. October 10 October 17 October 24 If there is one defense that has the chance of being thoroughly October 29 prepared for the Georgia Tech November 5 offense in only one week, it’s Bud Foster’s crew. Tackling will November 14 be at a premium against November 21 Jonathan Dwyer and company, especially with a division title at November 28 stake.
As much as things have changed on offense, not much has really changed on defense. Seven starters return to a unit that yielded less than 280 yards total offense per game. DE Jason Worilds is the new Corey Moore/Darryl Tapp/Chris Ellis pass rushing beast. Well, “new” isn’t quite right; he had eight sacks and 18.5 tackles for a loss in 2008 and will have maximum attention this season. Consequently, the defense will be the best in the league, yet again.
Alabama (ATL) Marshall Nebraska Miami @ Duke Boston College @ Georgia Tech BYE UNC (Th.) @ East Car. (Th.) @ Maryland NC State @ UVA
Player to Watch - S Kam Chancellor - since the mid-1990s when Bud Foster took over as defensive coordinator, the Hokies have prided themselves on being a team that is aggressive and physical. At 6’2” and pushing 220 pounds, Chancellor fits the bill for this defense in both capacities. He’s a rock hard hitter who can intimidate from the back four, but he’s also a smart player who takes control in the middle of the field. Look for Chancellor to always be a fixture “in the alley” for the run game as well. No team owns Thursday night more than the Hokies and with 12 days to prepare for the Tar Heels, expect the Hokies to be ready.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS The ACC has never quite lived up to the hype generated after raiding the Big East for BC, the U and Virginia Tech in 2004. But, the Hokies have dominated the “new” ACC - winning titles in 2004, 2007 and 2008. And, many think this is the best team in Blacksburg in a while. But, it’s a tough overall slate and Taylor needs to be fully healthy for VT to thrive.

OREGON 2009 PREVIEW
2008: 10-3, 7-2 BEAT OK. STATE HOLIDAY BOWL
CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK? WHO KNOWS, BUT IT IS KELLY’S TURN NOW After a memorable career following Rich Brooks as head coach of the Oregon Ducks, Mike Bellotti decided he would shut it down in Eugene, turning over the reins to the HCIW, i.e Head Coach in Waiting - Chip Kelly. The former The Skinny: New Hampshire head coach and Offense: 5 starters returning former UO OC Defense: 5 starters returning walks into, well, 2008 Final Stats okay, so Rushing offense: 280.1 ypg, 2nd he Passing offense: 204.8 ypg, 67th created the Total offense: 484.9 ypg, 7th offense, Scoring offense: 41.9 ppg, 7th but he Rushing Defense: 119.4 ypg, 23rd walks into Passing Defense: 270.2 ypg, 111th a pretty solid Total Defense: 389.6 ypg, 82nd situation in his first year as head coach. Scoring Defense: 28.2 ppg, 78th Only ten starters return, but there’s plenty of talent on campus to withstand the losses to the NFL. Especially at the quarterback position, where the roller coaster at that position cost the Ducks early in 2008.
The Ducks had plenty of hype in 2008, but with the quarterback position so up in the air, it was hard to gauge what this team could do week in and week out. Consequently, it wasn’t until late in the season that QB Jeremiah Masoli took over full-time. Once he did the offense could run the ball on anyone. Masoli and company ran for about 1,000 yards on Oregon State and mowed over Oklahoma State in the Holiday Bowl. RB LeGarrette Blount should have his off-the-field issues behind him to team with Masoli running the football. However, the Ducks lost plenty of talent up front, including three starters, so that could slow this unit down just a bit.
#13
OREGON SCHEDULE 2009 The Ducks couldn’t start the Chip Kelly era in a more difficult manner. A non-BCS monster on its blue turf on national television? That spelled disaster for Oregon State in 2006...could it be a repeat for Kelly’s boys?
Two years ago, Cal came to Eugene and knocked off the Ducks 31-24. DeSean Jackson did the most damage that day, but Jahvid Best could ultimately do more. This could be a tricky game for UO.
Sept. 3 September 12 September 19 Sept. 26 October 3 October 10 October 17 October 24 October 31 November 7 November 14 November 21 November 28 December 3
The defense lost its leader and four year starting safety Patrick Chung and second round draft pick Jairus Byrd, but the Ducks still have some players on that side of the ball. S T.J Ward is the hammer in the secondary. Don’t believe me? Just ask OSU’s Zac Robinson...see if he’s woken up yet from the hit Ward put on him in the Holiday Bowl. CB Walter Thurmond (see below) holds down one side of the field. Up front, DE Will Tukuafu racked up 17.5 tackles for a loss, fifth in the Pac-10 last season and leads the defensive line in the absence of Nick Reed.
@ Boise St. (Th.) Purdue Utah Cal Washington State @ UCLA BYE @ Washington USC @ Stanford Arizona State @ Arizona BYE Oregon State
Player to Watch - CB Walter Thurmond - for the past four years, the Oregon secondary was led by four year starter former safety Patrick Chung and former All Pac-10 CB Jairus Byrd. But, with both departing for the NFL, the onus of leadership for the secondary and on the defense falls to the talented Thurmond. Teams won’t throw much at Thurmond given his experience and cover acumen, but his most valuable asset this season will be his ability to take control of the ‘D’. The Game. The conference title will come down to this game. Oregon took down the mighty Trojans two years ago and is facing a similarly constructed USC team this year.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS The Oregon 2008 season turned on an axis when QB Jeremiah Masoli took over under center. With Masoli driving the bus in 2009, this team can, and will, challenge for the Pac-10 title, which means beating USC. But, at least the Trojans come to Eugene. As do the Golden Bears and Beavers - the two ‘other’ best teams in the Pac-10.

GEORGIA 2009 PREVIEW
2008: 10-3, 6-2 BEAT MICH. ST. CAPITAL ONE BOWL
NO STAFFORD, NO MORENO...NO PROBLEM? When I think about the 2009 version of the Georgia Bulldogs, all I can think about is Tee Martin and the Tennessee Volunteers. Huh? Well, remember when Peyton Manning was a senior in 1997? Lot of hype about Manning and The Skinny: a solid pre-season ranking, but in the Offense: 7 starters returning end, the Vols lost Defense: 6 starters returning to Nebraska in the 2008 Final Stats Orange Rushing offense: 148.3 ypg, 56th Bowl. Passing offense: 277.7 ypg, 16th The next year Total offense: 426.0 ypg, 22nd without Scoring offense: 31.5 ppg, 29th him? Rushing Defense: 122.3 ypg, 27th National Passing Defense: 189.7 ypg, 32nd title for Martin and Total Defense: 312.0 ypg, 22nd company.
Now, with those two collecting a paycheck and appreciably lower expectations, there’s no pressure on the Bulldogs, making them ultra-dangerous. It’s going to have to start with the calm, cool and collected Joe Cox. He’s waited years for his opportunity to lead this team, even starting a couple of games before Stafford took over full-time in 2006. He knows how to win, has a veteran OL, with Trinton Sturdivant returning, and can throw to one of the nation’s best young wide receivers A.J Green. The only major question is who totes the mail? Caleb King has the lead through early part of fall camp, but Carlton Thomas won’t go quietly (see box below).
#14
Scoring Defense: 24.5 ppg, 59th
The comparisons are there for this Georgia team. With Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno on campus, the Bulldogs fell short of the lofty expectations many of us had for them last season.
LB Rennie Curran leads the Bulldog defense that gets a boost with the return of Jeff Owens at defensive tackle. Curran, though, is one of the fastest linebackers in the nation and is as good as anyone sideline to sideline. But, overall, this defense lacks that dominant edge rusher and a physical force in the secondary. Will that kill them? No...at least not in games against teams not named OSU, LSU, Florida and Georgia Tech.
GEORGIA SCHEDULE 2009 Georgia had better find a RB by the time it heads to Stillwater. Well, it still may not matter if UGA can’t stop the vaunted OSU offense.
The Bulldog schedule is a monster, but it’s the annual Cocktail Party that presents the toughest opponent. The Bulldogs can salvage a rough season, for them anyway, by upsetting the #1 Gators, ala 1997.
Sept. 5 September 12 September 19 September 26 October 3 October 10 October 17 October 24 October 31 November 7 November 14 November 21 Nov. 27
@ Oklahoma St. South Carolina @ Arkansas Arizona State LSU @ Tennessee @ Vanderbilt BYE Florida (Jax.) Tennessee Tech Auburn Kentucky @ Ga. Tech (Fri.)
Player to Watch - RB Caleb King and Carlton Thomas - for the past two seasons, former legend Knowshon Moreno was the heart and soul of the Georgia offense. But, when Moreno declared early for the NFL, the run game was turned over to King and Thomas. King was a high school legend who many thought would take over and surpass even Moreno. But, Thomas may do that to King. The 5’7” dynamo is quick as a hiccup and gave UGA defenders all kinds of problems in the spring. With only six days to prepare, the Bulldogs have one of the most difficult season closing games in the nation against GT’s spread option look.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS Mark Richt’s Bulldogs underachieved mightily last season. Not only did they lose to Florida, as some expected, they lost to Georgia Tech and Alabama, both at home, which many didn’t expect. It has raised the eyebrow of the Georgia faithful, if only slightly. But, if those supporters are expecting better than 9-3, this isn’t the year. Not with this monster slate.

CAL 2009 PREVIEW
2008: 9-4, 6-3 BEAT MIAMI IN EMERALD BOWL
IS CAL PASADENA BOUND? FINALLY? The last time Cal played in the Rose Bowl was 1959. 50+ years ago. Perhaps, they deserved to play there in 2005, after the 2004 season, but then again Texas Tech beat them into submission in the Holiday Bowl, so deserve, preschmerve. The fact is that the Cal The Skinny: Golden Bears Offense: 7 starters returning haven’t seen Defense: 8 starters returning Pasadena on, or 2008 Final Stats around, Rushing offense: 186.2 ypg, 29th January 1st in over Passing offense: 189.8 ypg, 83rd 50 years. It’s not as easy to get there now, if USC or some
other first place team goes to the BCS championship game, but this team has the arsenal to win the conference outright. Offensively, it’s the Jahvid Best show. The most explosive player in this conference is a threat to take it to the house every time he touches the ball. He can run it, he can catch it and when needed, he can return it. But, every defense, from Maryland to Stanford will have #4 in its crosshairs, which means QB Kevin Riley must have a consistent year at the position. The O line will struggle to find a replacement for NFL first rounder Alex Mack, but three starters do return, including T Mitchell Schwartz, a guy I love on the edge.

CAL SCHEDULE 2009 The Fightin’ Tedfords have their hands full knocking off an Oregon ball club that’ll run the ball 75% of the day.
Cal hasn’t knocked off the Trojans since 2003, but if there’s a shot to do it, this is it. Catch USC in the first half of this season or you won’t catch them for a while. Boy, what else is new?
Defensive coordinator Bob Gregory is one of the most underrated DCs in the nation and he’ll have a crew that should be top two or three in the Pac-10. CB Syd’Quan Thompson has matured into one of the best defenders in the conference and returns to lead the secondary. DE Tyson Alualu and Cameron Jordan are solid on the edge, while LB Mike Mohamed (87 tackles) finally gets to start full-time.

Player to Watch - QB Kevin Riley since Aaron Rodgers took off for Green Bay, Cal has struggled at times finding the right fit at quarterback. It was supposed to be Nate Longshore, but he wasn’t consistent, which led to two years of QB controversy with Riley. With Longshore’s eligibility exhausted., it’s all on Riley. He, obviously, has one of the best RBs in the nation to provide help, but he’s got to be an asset, not just an able game manager. Well, that is if Cal expects more than just another Emerald Bowl appearance. Jahvid vs. Jacquizz - last year, this was a running back lovers’ delight! And, 2009’s matchup shouldn’t be any different.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS Cal has always intrigued me, but never could truly live up to expectation. However, the make-up of this team is different than the teams of the past few years with Best being the offensive focus. With two of the toughest games of the season at Cal, this could easily be a great season for Tedford and Cal. Expect 9, pray for 10 but forget about 11. Wins, I mean.

TCU 2009 PREVIEW
2008: 11-2, 7-1 BEAT BOISE ST. IN POINSETTIA BOWL
TCU HAS SEEN THE BCS MENU, BUT NEVER ORDERED. IS IT TIME TO FINALLY EAT? I’m sure that TCU fans have never been Oregon Ducks fans, but on the night September 3, 2009, there might not be a more interested fan base, not wearing green and gold than TCU’s fans. Huh? Let me explain. As exciting as it is to The Skinny: win the Mountain West Conference, Offense: 5 starters returning there’s a bigger Defense: 5 starters returning prize out there for 2008 Final Stats the Rushing offense: 220.2 ypg, 12th Horned Passing offense: 201.1 ypg, 72nd Frogs. Okay, back to Total Defense: 217.8 ypg, 1st the point. With Boise State ahead Scoring Defense: 11.3 ppg, 2nd of TCU in the polls this early in the season, if BSU wins out and goes 12-0, there’s no chance for TCU to squeeze into a BCS bowl game. But, if the Broncos get knocked off in the opener, the door is wide open
for TCU to go 12-0 or even 11-1 and get to a BCS bowl game, maybe even the Rose Bowl, if one of the Pac-10 or Big 10 schools ends up in the BCS national championship game. Clear? Oh, Oregon? The Ducks play Oregon on September 3, the only true difficult game for BSU all season long. Regardless, this TCU team, as usual, is led by its defense, the number one statistical unit in the nation last season. And, if you watched them play, you knew why. These cats are good, led by All-American DE Jerry Hughes. All the former running back did was register 15 sacks and 19.5 tackles for a loss and destroy the edge throughout the season. But, Hughes has help throughout the defense, especially in the secondary where three of five starters return including CB Nick Sanders and Rafael Priest (see box below).

TCU SCHEDULE 2009 Clemson RB CJ Spiller facing the TCU defense might be one of the most intriguing matchups of the weekend.
BYU wants this one badly, after a 32-7 pasting last year in Fort Worth on national television, the Cougars have to win this one to rid themselves of the demons of that demoralizing loss.
September 5 September 12 September 19 Sept. 26 October 3 October 10 October 17 October 24 October 31 November 7 Nov. 14 November 21 November 28
The loss of offensive coordinator Mike Schultz will be tough to overcome, but at least QB Andy Dalton has been through the fire. Starting his third year for the Horned Frogs, the offense is in fine hands. RB Ryan Christian should get the bulk of carries with Aaron Brown off to the NFL.
BYE @ Virginia Texas State @ Clemson SMU @ Air Force Colorado State @ BYU UNLV @ San Diego State Utah @ Wyoming New Mexico
Player to Watch - CB Nick Sanders and Rafael Priest TCU head coach Gary Patterson and defensive coordinator Dick Bumpas want to be as aggressive on defense as possible. These two corners make that imminently possible. These two were all conference corners and can play man coverage with the best of them in the nation. Not many people have heard of them, but the MWC receivers know full well that Sanders and Priest make it tough for a full 60 minutes. TCU gave this game away last year in Salt Lake City - don’t expect that to happen again in Fort Worth.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS There’s not much difference in this year’s TCU squad and last year’s squad. It’s going to be multiple on offense, even without Schultz, and it’s going to kick your butt physically on defense. It has the horses on the ‘D’ to do be one of the three best defenses in the nation. If the Frogs get solid RB play, they could be finally BCS bowl bound. Time to eat, Froggies!

BOY, THAT PAUL JOHNSON SURE CAN COACH, CAN’T HE? Offensively, Johnson brought his spread option attack with him to Atlanta, with many skeptics, but QB Josh Nesbitt worked wonders to turn those naysayers into supporters. Dwyer is a beast and the perfect fit in this offense as the hammer. He had 200 carries for 1,395 yards and 12 TDs on the ground. With a blend of power and explosiveness in the open field, he’s more than just a fullback in this offense. The key for the ‘O’, though, will be finding two tackles to replace graduating seniors. Of any position on the field, this offense must have strong tackle play or it’ll go nowhere.

GEORGIA TECH SCHEDULE 2009 September 5 Clemson isn’t Clemson like you remember it...or Sept. 12 how it was hyped to be in September 19 2008, but it’s still a stern test in week two. Sept. 26 October 3 October 10 If Georgia Tech was the soOctober 17 called “Flavor of the month” October 24 in 2008, then it might just be the Tar Heels in 2009. UNC October 31 has the speed and the November 7 athleticism to disrupt the ‘spread option’ attack. The November 14 game being in the ATL should November 21 help the Yellow Jackets, though. November 27
On the other side of the ball, the Jackets defensive line has some major holes to fill. Only one starter returns, but in my opinion the DL underachieved last season. DE Derrick Morgan is the only returning defensive linemen but he’s solid. FS Burnett, who reminds me of former Florida star Reggie Nelson, is the leader for this defense. And, it’s that defense that’ll determine whether Georgia Tech is a ten win team or a seven win squad.
Jacksonville State Clemson @ Miami North Carolina @ Miss. State @ Florida State Virginia Tech @ Virginia @ Vanderbilt Wake Forest @ Duke BYE Georgia (Fri.)
Player to Watch - FS Morgan Burnett - this is one of those years that makes me smile - it’s a year littered with fantastic safeties. Start with Eric Berry. Flip to Taylor Mays. But, don’t forget about Burnett. He’ll get overshadowed, but he’s the best defensive player in the ACC this season. In 2008, he had seven interceptions and 93 tackles, proving that he’s got a world of talent. But, he also possesses a high football IQ and is one of my favorite players in college football. The Coastal Division race will be over after this one. Win and GT will be in Tampa for the ACC title game.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS Not much was expected from the Yellow Jackets in 2008, what with a new coach and a somewhat controversial spread option attack. But, Georgia Tech was brilliant throughout the season, before getting hammered by LSU. If the Jackets have learned from that debacle and can fill holes on the D Line, then another nine win season is more than possible.

THE GEORGIA TECH OPTION OFFENSE
“PUT THE FILM ON, BRO” IN THE FILM ROOM WITH JOHN HARRIS
In our preview, we’ll take a look at the triple option that Paul Johnson brought to Georgia Tech last season. Here’s a simple triple option, old school triple option that is still as effective as it was back in the 1970s.
Against Georgia, the Yellow Jackets line up two receivers into the boundary, with only a wing on the opposite side of the field. With the ball on the left hash, the Jackets have the entire right side of the field open to the option. Look at how tight the CB is to the wide side. In figure 2 to the right, you can see QB Josh Nesbitt take the snap and stick it into the belly of RB Jonathan Dwyer
1 3
2
4
From this point, it’s easier to see Nesbitt’s reads from the end zone view. His first read is the DE (1) - his pull read. If the DE closes as he does here, Nesbitt will pull the ball and take it to his next read, the CB (2) #5. #36 (in the square) has responsibility for the safety, knowing that #5 is essentially taken care of, through the QB’s read process. LB Akeem Dent #51 (3) looks to be in good position at this point to take the QB, but... ...he gets lost and now has a horrible angle on the QB. Now, Nesbitt has momentum to the outside, as does his pitchman. And, due to the poor read by Dent, Nesbitt has two steps on him to the outside. But, at that point, Nesbitt has his eyes on the CB. As the CB inched closer to the action, he found himself in horrible position to make a play on the pitch man (in the circle). Note how many steps the pitch man has on the CB...if Nesbitt can get him the ball, there’s only one man to beat. But, #36 throws a sweet cut block, allowed in the college game downfield (4). #20, the pitch man, is catching the ball ON the right hash, with no UGA defender outside the hash. #36 knocks the safety for a loop. Roddy Jones, #20, turns up field for a big time gain. The Yellow Jackets scored on this drive, the first in the third quarter, leading GT to a huge 45-42 win on the road. Nesbitt made all the right reads and Georgia’s inability to be responsibility sound on the perimeter killed any chance of stopping a simple triple option run. THEY said you couldn’t do this to SEC defenses. Georgia Tech did...all day long.
UTAH 2009 PREVIEW
2008: 13-0, 8-0 BEAT ALABAMA IN SUGAR BOWL
AFTER A SWEET PERFORMANCE IN SUGAR BOWL, WHAT DO THE UTES DO NOW? Raise your hand if you HONESTLY thought the Utes had a chance against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl last January. Okay, liars, put your hands down. I am, and always will be, an ardent non-BCS supporter and even I thought Utah The Skinny: would get rolled. It would compete Offense: 4 starters returning early, but rolled Defense: 7 starters returning late. I guess ALL 2008 Final Stats of us were Rushing offense: 156.5 ypg, 51st wrong. Passing offense: 244.5 ypg, 35th Utah head Total offense: 400.9 ypg, 35th coach Scoring offense: 36.9 ppg, 15th Kyle Rushing Defense: 99.2 ypg, 11th
The biggest question for the Utes offensively is going to be who takes over for former star QB Brian Johnson. The Texan was a six year senior who had poise and cool and in the end, it was that experience that played well in games against Oregon State and TCU. Last year’s backup Corbin Louks has already transferred, leaving Terrence Cain as the next in line. However, true freshman Jordan Wynn showed up in the spring and wowed Whittingham and the Ute offensive staff. So, it’s a two horse race at this point. Either way, whoever lines up under center will do so behind three experienced O Linemen Zane Beadles, Caleb Schlauderaff and Zane Taylor.
#18
Passing Defense: 190.0 ypg, 33rd
Whittingham’s 13-0 Utes were Total Defense: 289.2 ypg, 11th lauded throughout Scoring Defense: 17.2 ppg, 12th the off-season and received an inordinate amount of attention for the Sugar Bowl win. The question now is whether this team has gotten off of cloud nine long enough to get ready for the 2009 slate.
While the offense will need a little time to get it together before the trip to Oregon, the defense could be even better than last year’s. LB Stevenson Sylvester returns (see box below) and is unquestionably the best backer in the league. DE Koa Misi is an underrated pass rusher. The secondary loses both corners, but the safeties, Joe Dale and Robert Johnson, return to wreak havoc. Even without former star DE Paul Kruger, this will still be a dominant unit, on par with TCU.
UTAH SCHEDULE 2009 The Utes have never been scared to step out of conference, but traveling to Eugene this early in the season with an unsettled QB may be a little worrisome.
The only good news about going to TCU is that it’s in week 11. That’s it. TCU will be as sky high as it’s ever been for this one and if the Utes aren’t settled on ‘O’, it’ll be a long night.

Utah State @ San Jose State @ Oregon Louisville BYE @ Colorado State UNLV Air Force Wyoming New Mexico @ TCU San Diego State @ BYU
Player to Watch - LB Stevenson Sylvester - at the coin flip of the Sugar Bowl, I learned all I needed to know about Sylvester. I had watched him all season and loved the way he plays the game. But, when former Alabama center Antoine Caldwell was talking trash about what ‘Bama was about to do to the gutty, little Utes, Stevenson blasted back. Then, he and his defense proceeded to run roughshod over the ‘Bama offense. #10 plays linebacker, but runs and hits like a safety. I love his ability to blitz off the edge and create mayhem in the Utes defensive scheme. The Holy War should be another, well, war this year. And, if TCU stubs its toe, this one could be for MWC title and possible BCS berth.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS The Utes have as many or more BCS Bowl wins over the past five years than Tennessee, Notre Dame, Georgia or Ohio State, to name a few. But, what is all of that worth in 2009? Well, knock off the UO, TCU and BYU and it might mean voters need to take them seriously, putting them in Pasadena for the crown. But, don’t expect 12-0 this season. 10-2.

KANSAS 2009 PREVIEW
2008: 8-5, 4-4 BEAT MINNESOTA IN INSIGHT BOWL
WITH REESING AT THE HELM, ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE There wasn’t much we didn’t know about QB Todd Reesing after watching him for two years as the starting quarterback for the Kansas Jayhawks. But, in last year’s regular season finale against the hated Missouri Tigers, he showed that maybe The Skinny: there was a little Flutie Magic in the Offense: 8 starters returning youngster from Defense: 7 starters returning Texas. With his 2008 Final Stats body Rushing offense: 126.8 ypg, 83rd bandaged Passing offense: 305.6 ypg, 8th up and held Total offense: 432.4 ypg, 21st together Scoring offense: 33.4 ppg, 22nd by duct Rushing Defense: 123.1 ypg, 28th tape, Passing Defense: 273.6 ypg, 114th basically, Reesing Total Defense: 396.7 ypg, 89th led his team to an improbable 40-37 Scoring Defense: 28.9 ppg, 82nd win over the Big XII North champion Tigers. Quite simply, on that day, you wondered if Reesing could single-handedly put the Jayhawks on his back and beat nearly everyone in the Big 12.
The good news for Reesing is that he’ll have the same stellar set of skill players around him that have been there since 2007. All-Big 12 candidates Dezmon Briscoe (see box below) and Kerry Meier return as perhaps the conference’s best WR duo. RB Jake Sharp can do a little bit of everything and is coming off of a 860 yard/12 TD season as a junior. The offensive line needs a little work, but Reesing’s ability to “make things happen” gives that unit a chance to succeed with little experience.
#19
Defensively, the biggest change is the scheme. The Jayhawks had been a 4-3 team, but are going to transition into a 4-2-5 this season. Having to replace all three LBs, it probably was a wise move. The secondary is the strong point of this defensive unit. SS Darrell Stuckey is the captain of the defense and is starting for the third straight year. He is the leading returning tackler with 98 stops and also had five interceptions to lead the team. But, the key to success this season is finding a couple of playmakers at the linebacker position. The DL was a bit of a disappointment last year and must improve.
KANSAS SCHEDULE 2009 The Jayhawks season doesn’t really get going until late October when they travel to Norman. Now, that’s a wake-up call.
The Big 12 North is going to get knocked all season long. I can tell you, I’m going to do it and I’m definitely not the only one. However, the North title will come down to this game, one KU lost last year.
September 5 September 12 September 19 September 26 October 3 October 10 October 17 October 24 October 31 November 7 Nov. 14 November 21 Nov. 27
Northern Colorado @ UTEP Duke Southern Miss BYE Iowa State @ Colorado Oklahoma @ Texas Tech @ Kansas State Nebraska @ Texas Missouri (Fri.)
Player to Watch - WR Dezmon Briscoe - perhaps no receiver in the country, outside of Minnesota’s Eric Decker, is as valuable to his team as Briscoe. I say that because Briscoe may not ultimately be a part of this team. Head coach Mark Mangino has determined Briscoe is ‘day-to-day’ on this team after his off the field problems. Briscoe was suspended in the spring and hasn’t completely ingratiated himself back into Mangino’s good graces. He is academically eligible, so that’s one step in the right direction. When he does return for good, this offense is one of the best in the nation. No matter what Missouri returns, the Tigers are going to be tough. It’s the Border War, people...6 days after UT.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS Outside of Texas and Oklahoma, the Jayhawks should be favored to win every other game on the schedule. But, had Briscoe been out of the game plan, it would have been so much more difficult to get to the top of the Big 12 North. The Jayhawks shouldn’t get tripped up in one of the first six games - then they’ve got to win only 3 games to be 9-3.

NOTRE DAME 2009 PREVIEW
2008: 7-6 BEAT HAWAII IN HAWAII BOWL
COLLEGE FOOTBALL HOMEOSTASIS IS BACK...ND IS A TOP 25 TEAM AGAIN So, last year, I put the Irish in my final top 25 and took hell for it. I didn’t take people’s scoffing and snickering to heart - I just told them “you’ll see”. Well, the Irish were on track to prove me right.
This year, the pressure is on head coach Charlie Weis to finish the season within in the Top 25, presumably with ten wins. But, with this squad and this schedule, that’s more than possible.
With a 5-2 record, heading into games against decent, but Offense: 10 starters returning unranked Pitt and Defense: 5 starters returning Boston College and 2008 Final Stats an Rushing offense: 109.7 ypg, 100th abysmal Passing offense: 245.4 ypg, 34th Syracuse team, I Total offense: 355.1 ypg, 65th was Scoring offense: 24.7 ppg, 67th certain Rushing Defense: 134.2 ypg, 45th that the Passing Defense: 195.7 ypg, 43rd Domers could Total Defense: 329.9 ypg, 39th finish 9-3, with the only loss to #3 Scoring Defense: 22.2 ppg, 42nd USC on the road. A 9-3 record would have most definitely put the Irish in the Top 25 at season’s end. However, the Irish flaked out and losing all three Pitt and Syracuse both at home - finishing the regular season a disappointing 7-5.
Offensively, the Emu, aka Jimmy Clausen, leads the Irish. Many have poked fun at ND’s flashy leader, but he threw for as many TDs (25) as #1 draft pick Matt Stafford in 2008. In his third year as a starter, he’s expected to take a Brady Quinn-like leap. He’s definitely got help. His receiving corps, led by Golden Tate, Michael Floyd (see below) and TE Kyle Rudolph, is one of the best in the nation. His offensive line returns four starters, including All-American candidate Eric Olsen.
The Skinny:
#20
Defensively, the Irish will be led by five-star recruit Manti T’eo. After one week of practice, he’s been moved to the middle linebacker position, forcing Brian Smith to the outside. DE Ethan Johnson is a monster who has NFL written all over him. CB Robert Blanton is a future All-American at the position and is the type of playmaker that DC Corwin Brown craves.
NOTRE DAME SCHEDULE 2009 September 5 Nevada Sparty’s last two trips to South Bend didn’t go well September 12 @ Michigan for the Irish, who Sept. 19 Michigan State desperately need a big win to kick start this season. September 26 @ Purdue October 3 Washington October 10 BYE October 17 USC October 24 Boston College Although many have this October 31 WSU (San Ant.) chalked up as a Trojan win, this game sets up as well as it November 7 Navy could for the Fighting Irish November 14 @ Pitt bye week, at home and against what is thought to be November 21 U Conn a not-yet-finished USC November 28 @ Stanford product.
Player to Watch - WR Michael Floyd last year’s freshmen receiving corps was one of the best we have seen in quite some time. AJ Green at UGA and Julio Jones from Alabama received most of the publicity, given the success of the SEC. But, in the end, the best of the bunch might be #3 for the Irish. With glue sticks for hands, he can “go get it” anytime the ball is in the air and many around the Irish program think he has just scratched the surface of what he can do. Two years ago, Navy beat the Irish in South Bend. Last year, the Irish escaped with a narrow four point win. This year the Irish had better take care of business in a big way.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS Can you believe in the Irish? It might be tough to dive right in, but, if it doesn’t happen this year, it’s not going to happen. Four years of highly touted recruits, momentum from a bowl win and an advantageous schedule intersect in 2009 and that formula typically adds up to ten wins or more. Consequently, Weis needs ten wins badly to see 2010, but he’ll get them.

MICHIGAN STATE 2009 PREVIEW
2008: 9-4, 6-2 LOST UGA IN CAPITAL 1 BOWL
D’ANTONIO HAS SPARTY ON THE RIGHT TRACK During the John L. Smith era, the Spartans had a modicum of success, but the stench of late, improbable losses and losses due to stupid/mentally inept decisions hung over this team for years. Head coach Mark D’Antonio was The Skinny: handed a program that had plenty of Offense: 7 starters returning athletes, but one Defense: 8 starters returning still trying to rid 2008 Final Stats itself of Rushing offense: 130.2 ypg, 77th that Passing offense: 213.3 ypg, 62nd stench. Consider Total offense: 343.5 ypg, 74th that Scoring offense: 25.1 ppg, 62nd hurdle Rushing Defense: 142.5 ypg, 67th crossed. Passing Defense: 213.4 ypg, 69th D’Antonio led the Total Defense: 355.9 ypg, 58th Spartans to nine regular season wins Scoring Defense: 22.1 ppg, 41st last year, but the most important thing that has happened under D’Antonio is that the Spartans are no longer a “flaky, inconsistent” bunch who can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
The pieces are in place for Sparty to take the next step, but a few questions, especially at two key offensive positions stand in the way. Although Brian Hoyer wasn’t the most outstanding QB the green and white have ever seen, he was a solid game manager who at least provided good leadership in the huddle. Replacing him is project number one for the Spartans offense. Kirk Cousins and Keith Nichol (see box below) have been battling for the job since January 2nd and you could honestly flip a coin to see who’s going to win that race.
#21
But, the offensive stud last year was Javon Ringer, who was a finalist for the Doak Walker Award. Finding another Ringer is almost more important for the Spartan coaching staff. Six different running backs are making a claim for the top spot, including true freshmen Edwin Baker and Larry Caper. With three returning offensive linemen, the backs should have ample help in front of them. Defensively, the linebackers are the heart of this team. MLB Greg Jones is the best in the league and that’s a mouthful in this conference with some of the nation’s best. OLB Eric Gordon is highly underrated.
MSU SCHEDULE 2009 Sparty ain’t skeered now to go into South Bend and put a whipping on the Irish. But, a third trip in a row? Not sure if the Spartans are that good, especially with a QB starting only his third game. The Illini fell off last season, but has a boatload of talent. So, it’s plausible that the Spartans could struggle with the speed Illinois possesses. But, then again, the Illini could have packed it in for the season by game six. That dichotomy makes this such a tough matchup for MSU.
September 5 September 12 Sept. 19 Sept. 26 October 3 October 10 October 17 October 24 October 31 November 7 November 14 November 21
Montana State Central Michigan @ Notre Dame @ Wisconsin Michigan @ Illinois Northwestern Iowa @ Minnesota Western Michigan @ Purdue Penn State
Player to Watch - QB Kirk Cousins or Keith Nichol - Michigan State will find a running back, I’m fairly sure of that. Not as good as Javon Ringer, but good nonetheless. But, what the Spartans need to find out in a hurry is which one of these two can take over for Brian Hoyer. Cousins actually saw some time, including key moments in the Capital One Bowl, but both of them had strong springs. I think eventually one of these QBs may be better than Hoyer ever was, but someone better prove it quickly for the 2009 season rides on this one position. With Penn State and Ohio State clearly the chalk in the conference, the Spartans must win to finish 3rd.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS The Spartans have a good opportunity to really make some waves this season. Of the six road games they’ve got, they should be favored in four, maybe five, of them. The only truly tough home game is Penn State and there is no Ohio State on the slate. If Cousins/Nichol improves each and every week, the Spartans are going to be a monster in November.

NORTH CAROLINA 2009 PREVIEW
2008: 8-5, 4-4 LOST WVU IN CAR CARE BOWL
YEAR THREE FOR BUTCH DAVIS IN CHAPEL HILL SHOULD BE SPECIAL Excuse the Chapel Hill faithful if they’re still a little euphoric. They’re so excited about what Butch Davis has done with this football team that you could hear them roaring throughout the entire spring. Oh, wait, you mean that The Skinny: excitement was for the basketball title Offense: 7 starters returning the Heels won in Defense: 9 starters returning April? Well, some 2008 Final Stats of it was Rushing offense: 122.6 ypg, 89th meant for Passing offense: 198.8 ypg, 74th the 2009 football Total offense: 321.3 ypg, 92nd season, Scoring offense: 27.7 ppg, 43rd right? Rushing Defense: 139.4 ypg, 56th Passing Defense: 226.0 ypg, 84th
Most Davis teams hang their hat on the defensive side of the ball and this one is no different. DT Marvin Austin is the most well-known of the nine returning starters, but he’s got to play up to his enormous hype in 2009. He’s got the talent to be another Gerald McCoy/Ndamukong Suh, but it’s time for him to live up to the billing. Fortunately for UNC fans, the linebackers do live up to the hype. LB Quan Sturdivant and Bruce Carter are going to be the best LB duo in the ACC and the third member of that unit, well, see the box below. FS Deunta Williams has NFL written all over him and will be the unquestioned leader of the secondary.
#22
RIGHT?!?!
Total Defense: 365.4 ypg, 64th
Yes, some of that excitement was meant for the football team, the best unit that has taken the field at Kenan Stadium since Mack Brown’s 1997 team. Davis’ Heels have made significant strides the past two years, but the quantum leap could be in 2009. Scoring Defense: 21.2 ppg, 32nd
NORTH CAROLINA SCHEDULE 2009 September 5 The Tar Heels have the speed and athleticism on the defensive September 12 side of the ball to counter GT’s September 19 option precision. But with only one week to get ready, after a Sept. 26 tough matchup with ECU, the October 3 Heels could really be walking into a Hornet’s nest...errr October 10 Jacket’s nest. October 17 October 22 Florida State isn’t what they October 29 were at the beginning of the November 7 decade, but a Thursday night road tilt will bring out the November 14 best in the Seminoles. November 21 November 28
Offensively, QB T.J Yates hasn’t proven that he can stay healthy for a full year. Heck, he can’t even stay healthy playing a game of Ultimate Frisbee. But, if he does, he’ll have some big receivers at his disposal - Greg Little and Dwight Jones (both 6’3” and 220). However, the running game must improve. Consequently, it should do just that as RB Shaun Draughn is the unquestioned number one ball carrier. With three returning starters on the O Line, Draughn should be a 1,000 yard rusher this season.
The Citadel @ U Conn East Carolina @ Georgia Tech Virginia Georgia So. BYE FSU (Th) @ Va. Tech (Th) Duke Miami @ Boston College @ NC State
Player to Watch - LB Zach Brown Head coach Butch Davis came to Chapel Hill with a plan. As such, no one personifies the “Butch Davis UNC Plan” more than Brown. He ran a hand-timed 4.26 in the forty this offseason at 230 pounds. Let me repeat, he plays linebacker. Davis knows the formula very well and used it at Miami speed begat speed begat even more speed. Brown’s ability to move, for lack of a better term, allows Carolina DC Everett Withers to do a lot of different things with his defense in 2009. Beating Va. Tech on a Thursday night in Blacksburg is a near impossibility. But, Davis’ Heels are confident enough to go battle, that’s for sure.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS I love what Butch Davis has done thus far in Chapel Hill. But, this is the year that the Tar Heels need to take the proverbial next step or else it’ll be another Virginia (i.e. highly touted recruits, early success, followed by 3 or 4 years of average-ness). The schedule is tough, but manageable, especially with the talent Davis has at his disposal. Expect nine wins this year.

2008: 8-5, 5-2 BEAT NC STATE PAPAJOHN’S BOWL
SOMEONE HAS TO WIN THE BIG EAST, RIGHT? It’s been a couple of years since the Scarlet Knights have made it into the Top 25, but this seems to be the right time for them to return. Why? FACT: The perceived top four teams in the Big East all travel to Piscataway Cincinnati, Pitt, USF and West Virginia. Rutgers hasn’t lost a Big East game at home since October
2007 and has lost only two Big East games in the last three seasons. But, the question that has dogged this team all summer will dog them throughout the season until a QB emerges. Who is the QB? Former signal caller Mike Teel started for three years and the offense was built around an explosive passing game. Uh, don’t expect the Scarlet Knights to be 18th in the nation in passing this season. Domenic Natale and Jabu Lovelace should battle for the spot, but they just might be keeping it warm for true freshman Tom Savage. With all five OL starters returning, expect Rutgers to re-emphasize the ground game and perhaps mix in some spread option as well. With Davis’ head screwed on properly, the run game should be strong.
#23
RUTGERS SCHEDULE 2009 The Champ is here! The Champ is here! Well, the difference in this UC squad will be evident early. This is the perfect time to catch the Bearcats.
USF doesn’t like heading north to Piscataway. Don’t believe me? Check the tape from 2007 when Ray Rice and the Fightin’ Schianos knocked off the #2 ranked Bulls 30-27. And, it’ll be a wee bit nippy in November. Rough night expected for USF.
Defensively, the unit revolves around D’Imperio, who had 93 tackles and 12.5 tackles for a loss in 2008. But, playing in the middle of this 4-3 scheme, he needs some protection on the inside. Unfortunately for him, two new defensive tackles must emerge to provide some assistance. Furthermore, the secondary could use some depth at corner, but CB Devin McCourty is solid.
Sept. 7 Cincinnati (Mo) September 12 Howard September 19 FIU September 26 @ Maryland October 3 Texas Southern October 10 BYE October 16 Pitt (Fri.) October 23 @ Army (Fri.) October 31 @ U Conn November 7 BYE November 12 USF (Thurs.) November 21 @ Syracuse November 28 @ Louisville December 5 West Virginia
Player to Watch - LB Ryan D’Imperio - this guy is a tackling machine. He finished last season with 93 tackles and 5.5 sacks. Most importantly, he mans the middle for this defense. He’s the unabashed leader for the defense, but as with most 4-3 mike backers, he’s got to be protected. Two new starting DT must emerge, but the goal is clear protect D’Imperio...or else. This ultimately could be for the Big East title and a BCS bowl berth. West Virginia doesn’t have Pat White, but it’ll be salty, nonetheless.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS The Scarlet Knights are going to win games in a different manner than they did last season. Once they started winning games last year, that is. Luckily enough, the schedule is tailormade for the Knights to win the Big East - USF, WVU, Pitt and UC - all visit Jersey. If the Scarlet Knights can find a quarterback, and, that’s a big if, they’ll be heading to a BCS bowl.

The offense will gain its foothold, with Taylor Potts (see box below) presumably under center, but the big question remains when? The offensive line remains the big key. Two major losses on the offensive line forced Leach to move Brandon ‘Mankind’ Carter to left tackle from guard. Can this unit ‘gel’ quickly enough to go to Austin on the 19th and win? I’m not betting the house on it, but Tech isn’t exactly bringing a knife to a gun fight, if you catch my drift.

Losses on the defensive line, including DE McKinner Dixon and Brandon Sesay have thinned out a group that couldn’t stand any more losses.
Defensively, the pass rush will miss DE Brandon Williams (NFL), Dixon and Sesay and pressure will have to start from the inside with Whitlock. DE Rajon Henley is perhaps the most talented defensive lineman, but there isn’t a ton of pass rushing talent. Furthermore, the loss of safeties Darcel McBath and Daniel Charbonnet was huge for a secondary that could end up playing a freshman at one of the safety spots. CB Jamar Wall will start at one corner spot, while last year’s starter Brent Nickerson and LaRon Moore will battle for the other spot.

TEXAS TECH SCHEDULE 2009 One week after an expected thumping in Austin, the Red Raiders had better not let the Longhorns beat them twice. This Houston team can score on anyone and by anyone, I mean it can score 40+ on Tech. Rolling into Robertson Stadium with its dobbers down could result in a Houston win. I really don’t like this game for Tech, but it is at home. But, it’s the ninth straight game for the Red Raiders; plus, it’s against a team that has Todd Reesing at QB. He can singlehandedly beat them. I repeat, I don’t like this one.

Player to Watch: QB Taylor Potts - the sophomore from Dallas has been watching record setting QB Graham Harrell run Leach’s offense like a maestro the past three years. But, Potts has something Harrell didn’t have - a howitzer for a right arm. Obviously, as Harrell proved, you don’t need a gun to be successful, but if Potts can harness that strong right arm, another solid season is within reach. Baylor nearly pulled the upset last year in Lubbock. What makes the Bears think they can’t actually win this year in Waco?
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS I like Tech to win eight games, losing to the top three in the South (UT, OU and OSU) and to Nebraska on the road. The Red Raiders have fared well against the Huskers in prior years on the road, but this year, it’ll be tough (7th straight game without a bye). Regardless, wins over Baylor and Kansas should put them in the Sun Bowl or Alamo Bowl at year’s end.

IOWA 2009 PREVIEW
2008: 9-4, 5-3 BEAT S. CAR. IN OUTBACK BOWL
FERENTZ HAS THE HAWKEYES RIGHT BACK WHERE THEY BELONG The Big Ten struggled mightily throughout the 2008 bowl season. Michigan State lost to Georgia. Wisconsin got hammered by FSU. Ohio State lost to Texas. Minnesota lost badly to Kansas. The one team that made a significant The Skinny: statement in January was Iowa. The offensive line, led by All-American Bryan Bulaga, paved the way for Shonn Greene’s 1,700+ yards on the ground and returns three starters. Even with QB Ricky Stanzi returning under center, the 2009 Hawkeyes will be defined by the ability to run the football behind Bulaga and the rest of the OL. However, Stanzi will rely on WR Derrell Johnson-Koulianos, one of the most underrated weapons in the nation. Defensively, the major question is whether Karl Klug, Travis Meade, Mike Daniels and/or Steve Bigach can fill the huge shoes of Mitch King and Matt Kroul at defensive tackle. King and Kroul were four year starters who protected the Hawks talented trio at linebacker. That trio, Pat Angerer, Jeremiha Hunter and A.J. Edds, is the best group in the Big Ten, but needs some ‘protection’ from the green rookies up front.
#25
So, has that win signaled a Total Defense: 291.3 ypg, 12th return to the top of the Big Ten and the Scoring Defense: 13.0 ppg, 5th top 25? Yes, but I think the seeds were sown long before the Hawkeyes took care of the Gamecocks. Head coach Kirk Ferentz took back control of this program, kept the off-season incidents to a minimum and got back to a January bowl. Passing Defense: 197.3 ypg, 47th
The schedule doesn’t do them any favors with road trips to Penn State in September and Ohio State in November. There’s a chance the Hawkeyes can win the Big Ten, but that would mean winning those two games. Beating MSU is more probable, even on the road, making third place a high probability.
IOWA SCHEDULE 2009 The Cyclones aren’t a top ten team whatsoever, but a trip to Ames isn’t a walk in the park, especially with a new, aggressive staff in place.
After last year’s 24-23 upset win over the Nittany Lions, don’t expect the Hawkeyes to get a warm welcome from the Happy Valley faithful. But, this team must go in and bust the proverbial gorilla right in the mouth

Player to Watch - the Starting RB no one knows his name, but we know it’s not going to be Shonn Greene - the 2008 Doak Walker Award winner. Jewel Hampton ran for 463 yards last season as the backup to Greene, but there were rumors of a knee injury and surgery this off-season. So, no one is sure if he’s truly healthy to play. If he’s not, it could be a waste of a really good run blocking offensive line. But, outside of a two year dry spell, the Hawks have always been able to run the ball, with or without a Jewel. The race to be third culminates with this game in East Lansing. With Ohio State and Penn State a solid 1-2, these two teams will fight for third in the Big Ten.
2009 SEASON CONCLUSION...IN 140 CHARACTERS OR LESS With fewer incidents this offseason, the Hawks showed they were truly back from a three year swoon. By humbling South Carolina last year, Iowa proved that it’s ready for top 25 status yet again. I don’t see them beating either of the conference’s Big Two - Penn State or Ohio State - on the road. A solid 8-4 finish is realistic, along with a Florida bowl trip.

BIG 12 PREDICTIONS
It’s deja vu all over again...again The Big 12 has become, arguably, the most potent offensive conference in the nation. Wait, what am I saying...it IS the most potent offensive conference in the nation and it’s not even close. This is a stark departure from the old SWC and the ground dominated Big 8...back in the day. Way, back in the day, honestly. However, no matter what has changed since the days of the SWC/Big 8, the same rings true this year as has been true the last ten years or so - Texas or Oklahoma will win the conference, while a “third” team will emerge. Consequently, the North is a free-forall for a bunch of 8-4 teams. That “third” team this season will be Oklahoma State, while Kansas should “win” the north.
Much like 2008, the South will continue to dominate with two of the top four teams in the nation, while the North will be lucky to have a team end up in the top 20 by season’s end.
Big 12 Predictions
The Big 12 is still littered with gunslingers - Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, Robert Griffin, Zac Robinson and Todd Reesing. Those five will be top 15 in the nation in passing efficiency and that doesn’t even account for Texas Tech’s Taylor Potts who should lead the league in passing yardage. It’s hard to think of a time when a conference had such quality quarterback play, much less for two years in a row.

SEC teams have won the BCS national championship crystal ball the last three years and if the season plays out as expected, there’ll be an SEC team hoisting the crystal ball over its head on January 8th. Florida has won two of those (2006 and 2008) and is the odds-on favorite to win the title again in 2009.

The West, though, is going to be the story this year in the conference as long as Ole Miss holds up its end of the bargain. The Rebels won six in a
Florida QB Tim Tebow and Tennessee S Eric Berry are my picks for offensive and defensive players of the year, respectively.

BIG 10 PREDICTIONS
The big two...and the little nine? Back in the day when Ohio State and Michigan were “ruling the roost” in the Big Ten, many referred to the conference as the Big Two and the little eight. Well, this year has a similar, much familiar feel. Ohio State and Penn State were the class of the Big Ten last season and will be yet again. There is a significant chasm between those two and the rest of the conference. The only good news for conference fans is that the two powers do play each other this season, unlike past seasons with the Big Ten’s rotating schedule.
Fightin’ JoePas should be favored in every game this season. Ohio State wants a measure of revenge against the PSU, but going to Happy Valley isn’t the best way to spend a Saturday night in November. The Buckeyes will get a much needed test in week two when USC travels to Columbus. If the Bucks can make a statement in that game, it’ll do wonders for the Big Ten.

The USC Trojans return only three starters on defense, losing three 1st or 2nd round NFL draft picks in the process. Former QB Mark Sanchez decided to take his game to the next level. Yet, when it comes to determining who the Pac 10 champ would be in 2009, there’s no hesitation whatsoever - USC. Now, it’s not as if other teams can’t play with or beat USC, but the Trojans haven’t lost two conference games in a season since Pete Carroll’s first year in 2001. That was eight years ago. Yes, I just did that math for you and you can thank me later. The Trojans still return some of the best talent in the nation with S Taylor Mays, OL Kris O’Dowd, OL Jeff Byers and
WR Damian Williams. But, there are questions. The main one is whether Aaron Corp or true freshman Matt Barkley can be effective enough to keep the offensive machine on track? Leinart did it after Palmer. Booty did it after Leinart. Sanchez did it after Booty. Expect Corp/Barkely to eventually do it, as well. THIS year? Good question. Although Oregon has lost key offensive linemen, they’re the next best team in this conference, a shade ahead of Cal. QB Jeremiah Masoli’s return gives the Ducks the edge to finish behind USC this season. OSU RB Jacquizz Rodgers and USC S Taylor Mays are my O and D pre-season players of the year in the Pac 10.
ACC PREDICTIONS
Hokie, Hokie, Hokie Hi! I’ve heard some “respected” college football analysts this summer refer to Virginia Tech as their surprise team. What ten wins and an Orange Bowl victory didn’t wake anyone up last season? Virginia Tech has been one of the top ten football programs over the past fifteen years, but there still a surprise team? Funny.
It won’t be easy in the Coastal Division with Georgia Tech and North Carolina barreling down on Tech in a hurry. The best three teams in the ACC reside in the Coastal Division. Although Clemson was a major disappointment for the most part in 2008, I think it can bounce back under the leadership of new coach Dabo Swinney. Not solely because of Swinney’s direction, but this team has some talent and QB Kyle Parker is a dual threat QB who should be a marked improvement over last year’s QB. Oh yeah, RB CJ Spiller has one final year of eligibility.
Regardless, under the leadership of QB Tyrod Taylor, the Hokies have the opportunity to do something they haven’t done in quite some time - be very good on offense. Not only be good, but be incredibly explosive. Taylor started last season on the bench after head ball coach Frank Beamer decided that he was Taylor and GT FS Morgan Burnett going to redshirt the talented are my O and D pre-season players Taylor. BIG EAST PREDICTIONS
It’s Knight Time in the Big East
Big East Predictions 1. Rutgers 2. West Virginia 3. USF 4. Pitt 5. Cincinnati 6. U Conn 7. Louisville 8. Syracuse
Outside of West Virginia, the Big East is typically derided for the lack of a super power. If West Virginia isn’t in the national title mix, it’s difficult for people to truly respect the rest of the Big East. And, this will be especially true now that the Big East’s most decorated player WVU’s Pat White has graduated. Cincinnati closed in a big way last season winning ten of its last regular season games and earned the school’s first BCS bowl bid in the Orange Bowl. But, the hard hitting defense lost nearly everyone, forcing UC to ‘steal’ players from the offensive side of the ball for 2009. Hey, that philosophy worked for former tight end turned defensive end Connor
Barwin, a 2nd round pick for the Houston Texans. I don’t think that Rutgers is as good now as they’ll be at the end of the season, but there’s so little meat on the schedule that if Scarlet Knights can take care of business at home, they’ll be the runaway winner of the Big East. USF, WVU, Pitt and Cincinnati all have to travel to Rutgers. West Virginia’s cupboard isn’t nearly bare, but White was the penultimate leader of this program for the past four years. QB Jarrett Brown has starting experience, not much, but at least the Mountaineers know what to expect. RB Noel Devine should have another highlight reel year for WVU.
MWC PREDICTIONS
A non-BCS Conference? I think not! If the casual college football fan didn’t know about the Mountain West Conference before January 2009, they certainly know about it now. Utah’s overwhelming Sugar Bowl victory over 12-1 Alabama put the nation on full blast that the Mountain West may be one of the top six conferences in the country. And, if people didn’t “get it” in 2008, they’ll absolutely understand in 2009.

Conference USA might be the most diverse conference in the nation. The East and the West conferences play two completely different styles.
The East is a more grind it out, smash mouth division. East Carolina won that side of the conference with an opportunistic and physical defense. Tulsa won the West division with one of the most explosive offenses in recent memory. But, Houston, Rice, SMU and UTEP could score on anyone, anywhere and anytime.
with Houston’s ‘O’ taking things to a different level. QB Case Keenum led the Cougars offense last season, the first under offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen. Keenum has so many receivers to utilize, he could have as many as four receivers with 55 receptions or more. WR Tyron Carrier came out of nowhere as a true freshman to be a star, so did RB Bryce Beall.
ECU will be the ying to Houston’s yang with two of the conference’s That dichotomy is again on display in best defensive players - DE CJ CUSA. Last year, defense won out Wilson and FS Van Eskridge. Eight when ECU knocked off Tulsa in the starters are back for ECU, but in the CUSA championship game. This CUSA champ game, it’s Coogahs year, though, offense will win out 2Nite!
MAC, WAC & SUN BELT CONFERENCE PREDICTIONS
Take a Michigan school and pray Last year, Turner Gill’s Buffalo Bulls flipped the script on the conference knocking off 12-0 Ball State in the MAC title game. The Bulls won’t be near as good after losing QB Drew Willy, but even if he did return, the West would be the chalk, no matter whether Central or Western Michigan emerged. CMU QB Dan Lefevour is the class of the league and wants to return the Chippewas back to the top of the MAC. He should do just that with Tim Hiller’s Broncos from Western Michigan a close second in the West. The East is perhaps a little tighter race, but BG QB Tyler Sheehan and the Falcons should win the East title over Buffalo and a talented Akron squad. MAC Predictions East 1. Bowling Green 2. Buffalo 3. Akron 4. Kent State 5. Temple 6. Ohio 7. Miami West 1. Central Michigan 2. Western Michigan 3. Ball State 4. Toledo 5. Northern Illinois 6. Eastern Michigan CMU over BG in MAC Champ. Game
Boise State and, well, Boise State Outside of Hawaii winning the WAC in 2007 under the leadership of Colt Brennan, Boise State has owned the WAC. And, by owned, I mean, no other team has won the conference outright since it was formed with these eight teams in 1998. And, guess what, go to Vegas and take the Broncos yet again. QB Kellen Moore, who threw for over 3,000 yards for the 12-1 Broncos in 2008 as a freshman, is now the unquestioned leader of this team. The scary part for the conference is that this iteration of Blue Turfers is faster, more talented and more physical than last year’s team. Perhaps, even more so than the legendary 2006 team. Nevada could be second in a number of different conferences and in many other years would be number one in the WAC. QB Colin Kaepernick is the conference’s player of the year, but gets plenty of help from a bruising running game that gets a huge boost from the return of former All-WAC RB Luke Lippincott.
This Sun shines brightest on Troy North Texas was once the definitive player in the Sun Belt Conference, but since Darrell Dickey “retired”, the SBC has been the dominated by Larry Blakeney’s Troy Trojans, the chalk in the SBC in 2009. Led by QB Levi Brown, the Trojans won the league in 2008 and with Brown returning should be atop the conference yet again. Although the Trojans must find some offensive linemen to fill the holes in that lineup up front, the defense should be stout. DE Brandon Lang is without question the defensive player of the year in the SBC and will get plenty of attention from NFL personnel people this fall. QB Corey Leonard of Arkansas State will push the Red Wolves to the top of the conference. He threw for more than 2,300 yards and 16 touchdowns, while rushing for more than 500 yards and four touchdowns. Unfortunately, these two don’t play this season, leaving us feeling empty at the end of year. SBC Predictions

GAMES OF THE YEAR AND ALL-AMERICAN OFFENSE
GAMES OF THE YEAR Oregon @ Boise State - Sept. 3
USC at Notre Dame - Oct. 17
There isn’t another road block between Boise State and another 12-0 season. So knock off Chip Kelly’s Ducks and the Broncos should be BCS bowl bound.
I know plenty of Domer fans who don’t think beating USC this year is possible. But, if the USC quarterbacks struggle, then the Domers may have a shot. If they win? Oh boy.
Va. Tech vs. Alabama - Sept. 5

Clemson is still licking its wounds after last year’s 34-9 lambasting in the opener in Atlanta against the Tide. You know two things about this game - Nick Saban will have the Tide prepared and QB Tyrod Taylor won’t be redshirted. One other thing, some dudes are going to get hit in this one - one of the most physical games of the year.
The Horns have owned the Cowboys over the past 12 years. In fact, the last time OSU beat Texas, John Mackovic was...wait, what? Oh, sorry, UT fans, I didn’t mean it like that.

WR JULIO JONES - ALABAMA No receiver strikes as much fear in defenses as the sophomore from Foley, Alabama. He accounted for 58 receptions and 924 yards, not to mention, the countless nightmares he left for SEC defensive backs. WR DEZ BRYANT - OK. STATE The most explosive of the OSU Triplets, Bryant put on a show for the Cowboy fans in 2008. He had 87 rec., 1,480 yards and 19 TDs in only his second year. TE JERMAINE GRESHAM - OU If he doesn’t remind OU fans of former OU great Keith Jackson, no one will. Part receiver, part offensive tackle, Gresham isn’t asked to dominate the edge, but he holds his own. T RUSSELL OKUNG - OK. However, Olsen is a key cog inside, protecting QB Jimmy Clausen, from his new center position.

2009 All-America Defense DE SERGIO KINDLE - TEXAS Move to DE will bolster Texas pass rush in a huge way. Finished last year with ten sacks and 14 tackles for a loss from his OLB position. Think Quentin Groves when you talk about Kindle - linebacker size, safety speed but playing DE. DE JERRY HUGHES - TCU Burst on the scene last year with one of the most dominant defensive performances of the year, racking up 15 sacks. He should demand double teams all season long in MWC. DT NDAMUKONG SUH - NEBRASKA Suh is the perfect three technique package quickness, great hands and strength. Had 115 tackles last season - most for UGA since 1998. ILB BRANDON SPIKES - FLORIDA Although he started a little bit slow last season, Spikes was the linchpin for the national title defense, racking up 93 tackles and four interceptions for the #1 Gators. OLB SEAN WEATHERSPOON - MIZZOU The ultimate stat stuffer - what didn’t ‘Spoon do last season? 155 tackles, 3 picks, 5 sacks and 18.5 TFL. Wow. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have much help and he’ll have to do it again this year. CB KYLE WILSON - BOISE STATE Perhaps a name you don’t recognize, but those receivers that have faced him know how good #1 is. Wilson finished with five picks and 35 tackles in 2008. Now, that’s saying something SS TAYLOR MAYS - USC Berry is a stud, but Mays is a receiver/ball carrier’s worst nightmare. Don’t believe me? Just ask his own DBs who get knocked out on a regular basis. Mays had 53 tackles and 2 TFL in 2008.
ALL-AMERICAN DEFENSE AND TOP PROSPECTS
TOP 50 DRAFT ELIGIBLE PLAYERS 1. FS Eric Berry, Tennessee, Jr. - the most complete prospect - cover abilities, run support, physical presence, able to play the middle of the field, just as well as he can play in the alley.
13. DE Carlos Dunlap, Florida, Jr.Dunlap, who has 3-4 DE written all over him, is more productive and a better athlete than Tyson Jackson, who went number 3 in 2009.
2. SS Taylor Mays, USC - ball carriers cringe when #2 is around. A crushing hitter who has some work to do in coverage such that he won’t just be a ‘box’ safety at the next level. 3. QB Sam Bradford, OU, Jr. - this year will tell us all about the Trophy, playing behind four inexperienced linemen. Can make all the throws and has a cool that is similar to former BC QB Matt “Matty Ice” Ryan. 4. LB Rolando McClain, Alabama, Jr. - Big, fast and physical, he’s the prototype NFL 4-3 inside linebacker at 6’3” and 255
14. DE Everson Griffen, USC, Jr.although he struggled last season, he’s a physical marvel. At 6’3” and 295, he’s another 3-4 DE prospect who’ll have Rex Ryan, et. al drooling by season’s end.
5. OT Russell Okung, OSU, Jr. - the prototypical left tackle in this year’s draft, but there are issues - consistency is the main one. Pass blocking skills are strong and has good feet, but must prove it on a play-by-play basis. 6. WR Dez Bryant, OSU, Jr. Physically gifted beyond belief, he must polish the rough edges, run better routes and become a bit more complete receiver in preparation for the next level. 7. TE Jermaine Gresham, OU, Sr. a difficult matchup for safeties and linebackers in the passing game. He has work to do as an in-line blocker, but he’s the best weapon in college football at this position. 8. DT Ndamukong Suh, Nebraska Incredibly quick off the snap with power. Could even bump out to 3-4 DE, so the versatility is a huge asset 9. CB Trevard Lindley, Kentucky tremendously productive player in the strongest conference in football. Great instincts at a position valued unlike many others in the NFL 10. LB Brandon Spikes, Florida would probably have been a top ten pick had he declared early for the 2009 Draft. Explosively quick to the ball, must work on shedding blocks and avoiding the ‘trash’ this season. 11. DT Gerald McCoy, OU - quick off the snap and great with his hands, 4-3 defenses will take a long hard look at a guy who can play this well at the 3 tech. 12. LB/DE Sergio Kindle, Texas most disruptive pass rusher in this year’s draft, but there’s some baggage. A lot of it.
15. RB Jahvid Best, Cal, Jr. - Speed is his game, there’s no question. Must prove to be a bit more durable, but boy can he fly. A less physical version of former Arkansas star Darren McFadden. 16. QB Colt McCoy, Texas, Sr. 17. LT Trent Williams, OU, Sr. 18. RB DeMarco Murray, OU, Jr. 19. TE Rob Gronkowski, Ariz., Jr. 20. CB Joe Haden, Florida, Jr. 21. RB CJ Spiller, Clemson 22. WR Golden Tate, ND, Jr. 23. QB Jevan Snead, Ole Miss, Jr. 24. DE Jermaine Cunningham, Florida 25. FS Morgan Burnett, GTech, Jr. 26. DE Greg Hardy, Ole Miss 27. LB Sean Weatherspoon, Miss. 28. CB Perrish Cox, OSU 29. WR Arrelious Benn, Illinois, Jr. 30. DE George Selvie, USF 31. TE Aaron Hernandez, UF, Jr. 32. CB Javier Arenas, Alabama 33. DT Terrence Cody, Alabama 34. LT Ciron Black, LSU 35. CB Kyle Wilson, Boise State 36. LT Bryan Bulaga, Iowa, Jr. 37. LT Sam Young, Notre Dame 38. LB Martez Wilson, Illinois, Jr. 39. DE Jerry Hughes, TCU, Jr. 40. QB Tim Tebow, Florida 41. SS Major Wright, Florida, Jr. 42. LT Adam Ulatoski, Texas 43. WR Damien Williams, USC, Jr. 44. WR Mardy Gilyard, UC 45. DT Marvin Austin, UNC, Jr. 46. 47. 48. 49. 50.
QB Zac Robinson, OSU QB Jimmy Clausen, ND, Jr. LT Zane Beadles, Utah WR Brandon LaFell, LSU LB Stevenson Sylvester, Utah

INTERVIEW WITH TENNESSEE’S ERIC BERRY
Last month, I had the opportunity to sit down and interview Eric Berry, preseason defensive player of the year. He was getting ready for the season to start. Here’s what he had to say... JH- Let’s take a step back and think about last season for a little bit. The Vols were 5-7 yet I just mentioned you were the finalist for a number of awards. Talk about that a little bit, the season you had last year. EB- Last season I was just trying to be a spark plug or the guy that got the team back on track and show the guys that the season wasn’t over yet. I mean, no matter what the situation was I gave it my all. I guess that showed up at the end of the season with me having the accolades. I was a little bit more upset because we didn’t make it to a bowl and we had a losing season so the awards didn’t do anything for me. I would much rather go to a bowl. JH- What would you say is the best part of your game and what do you feel like you still have to work on? EB- The stuff I have to work on is my man to man coverage. Tackling of course. Those things can go away over time if you don’t work on them. Those are the two main things I try to focus on in the offseason. The thing I feel good about is my “every play, every down.” Just going every play and not taking a play off no matter how long the drive is or who we are facing off I never take a play off you can’t do that. JH- A lot of people at safety pattern their game after Ronnie Lott. Who would you say you model your game after the most? EB- I would definitely have to say Ed Reed because of how he goes after the ball and makes the hits. But at the same time he can get sideline to sideline and get a pick and take it to the crib. He has numerous records in the NFL, a few Pro Bowls; I am trying to reach his level. He’s one of my favorite players. JH- Have you had a chance to talk with Ed? EB- I actually talked to him last Saturday and my brother was up in DC and saw
him at a pool party and put him on the phone and I got to talk to him. It was a pretty informal conversation. JH- There is a YouTube highlight reel that has 2 plays from last year’s Georgia game. You have a pick in the end zone off of Matt Stafford and you have a huge hit on Knowshon Moreno. Which one gives you more satisfaction? The pick or the big hit? After watching both, you seem more excited about the big hit…which would you rather have? EB- I would much rather have the INT. It gives my offense another chance to score. My team’s back in position to take the lead or continues to make the lead larger. The big hits are cool but at the same time they are lining back up. My hit on Knowshon was on first down so we had to line back up and get ready to go. JH- How was Knowshon to play against? EB- He is a sparkplug. He is one of the best I’ve played against as far as RB just because of the way he finishes his run. He never takes a play off either, so you got to watch yourself against him. JH- Who is the one player in the SEC that you absolutely hate to face? EB- I would have to save, he’s on my team, is Montario Hardesty. That is one of the best players I have ever encountered as far as the RB position. He comes out of the backfield, he blocks well. He is one of the guys that has really made my game go to the next level. JH- Who is the one player in the SEC that you get so jacked up to play against? EB-That whole Florida team. Anybody in the SEC. Alabama. The SEC is a big competitive conference. Who wouldn’t you want to play against? JH-Absolutely. You get excited to play against Tebow though don’t you? EB-Yeah I love playing against him because he is a big time competitor because he never backs down. Just going against him all the time you are going to take your game to the next level just facing him. JH- Everyone knows a new staff is in place in Knoxville. Talk about, from your perspective, how it’s changed for you - the scheme with new DC Monte Kiffin. Talk about his impact. EB- He has come in and right off the bat and just given us confidence about playing this season as far as our defense. He gave huge compliments to our previous coaches. And to tell you the truth both of
our defenses are pretty similar, but Monte just has a few new tweaks and a few little differences and calls some plays with some different things. But they are close to each other. Monte does a great job of coaching. JH- How about your new head coach Lane Kiffin. What has been his impact on the team, that the rest of us don’t get to see? EB- Coach is a stand up guy for his team. He always has his door open. It’s never closed you can talk to him about anything. Before he made those comments in the media he told us that he had our back no matter what. We were 5-7 last year, and for him to come in and say what he said that he really did believe in us. It did a lot for our confidence and made us want to play for him. We bought in as soon as he did that. It felt like we had no one on our side. He truly believes in us. JH- We know Tennessee has never led a Heisman campaign for a defensive player. They’ve done it for you, though. Talk about how that came about and talk about how you felt when they said they were going to start their Heisman campaign for you. EB- Well I sat down with Coach Kiffin and he was looking at my previous games and my stats and he just said that I, at least, deserve a shot at it, whether you win or not you deserve a shot because of the way I play the game. I couldn’t do anything but smile because it was such a big compliment to me. I really do appreciate the whole staff doing this campaign for me. Regardless of what happens, it’s a blessing in itself just to be in this position. JH- One final question. We are big coach O fans here at this station…the wild boys story…is it true? How crazy is Coach O? EB- Coach O is more passionate than crazy. A lot of people if you don’t know him would think he is crazy. But he is very passionate about this game and very serious about who he puts on the field. If you are 110 percent committed to this game he feels you don’t deserve to be on the field. No matter how good you are or how fast you are that’s just how he is. But I will tell you this…at 5 30 in the morning he will be screaming and running up and down the hallways before morning run. JH- That is fantastic! Thanks for your time. Best of luck. EB- Thank you and thanks for having me.
