Makar Sankranti 2009 Makara Sankranthi, or Makar Sankranti, in 2009 is on January 14. In traditional Hindu calendar followed in North India (Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand etc) – Makar Sankranti begins on January 13. In such calendars, January 14 is marked as Makar Sankranti Pushya Divas.

Pongal 2009 Pongal, the harvest festival of Tamil Nadu, is on January 14. From 2009 onwards Thai Pongal will be the official Tamil New Year as per Government orders. The New Year observed during Chithirai (March – April) has moved to Tamil month Thai 1.
