Y2 Camera & Directors – joint class #2 17 September 09 THE BRIEF You are to shoot a simple sequence using at least 3 shots. Within the sequence, you are to employ at least two cheats. Geography should be one of them. This could mean shooting a single sequence in two different places, but creating the illusion that it’s one. Or it could mean covering two opposite “sides” of a conversation, but in actuality, the geography is 90 degrees. Remember that when you cheat geography, the light sources must be consistent to the scene. Other cheats could involve: EYELINES • Axis compensation • Height • Selling o/c action • Preserving screen direction LENSES • Compression of space to sell action ON SET • Furniture • Height • Geography • Background (BG Scenic OR BG Action) • THE TURNAROUND ! SOUND • BG Noise – inserted • ADR • FX – foley, canned • O/S action • Wild lines • Miming bg sounds (e.g. restaurant) EDITORIAL • Time Compression/Expansion • Alternate Takes o Mixed CU’s Have fun with this, but a caution not to get too silly or over the top. This is a learning exercise and you are adults. The more seriously you take this, the more rigorously you embrace your learning, the more you’ll get out of the exercise. The purpose is to encourage you to use the Tools of Illusion to tell your stories powerfully and purposefully.
