“Swimmy”

. This painting was inspired by the popular book “Swimmy,” about a fish who taught others how to swim together looking like one big fish that faces the ocean with courage. 21 little foot prints are used to recreate the fish, hands prints make the seaweed and texture that represents the ocean. Materials: Acrylic on canvas Dimensions: 46” x 90” Kindergarten, K1 Sra. Herrera

“The Animals We Are”

Each student painted a mini canvas with their animal The themed mini canvases were then framed to create this original painting. Materials: Acrylic on canvas Dimensions: 22" x 26.25"

“Theater of Trees”

Each kindergartener in room KR pressed, by hand, clay into a plate mold. They were asked to paint their favorite dessert with bright and colorful glazes, resulting in a richly colored and textured, truly handmade dessert plate. The designs of "helado", "pastel", "pastelitos dulce", "postre chocolate" all originate from the imaginations of the children. Three sets of eight handmade dessert plates. Materials: Glazed ceramic Dimensions: 6” diameter

A colorful collection of trees take center stage on this multifacited wooden chest. These dazzling renditions were inspired by students’ observation of trees both in and around Alvarado Elementary School. Class Projects for Live Auction 1st Grade 1st Grade, Rm 5 Sra. Simrock

“Elements Art Collage”

1st Grade, Rm 6 Sra. Chang

“Magical Creatures of the Wild”

A mixedmedia art collage representing the four elements of earth, air, water, and fire. In a blend of images and colors, the artists used acrylic, artisnal paper, fabric and other scrap materials to form four quadrants of a circle which are adhered to a wood backing painted deep indigo. It was finished with a thick layer of resin, creating a glassy, three-dimensional quality to a beautiful picture that pays homage to our precious and fragile planet earth. Materials: Wood, acrylic paint, fabric, paper, resin Dimensions: 24” x 24”

The mosaic was inspired by 3 of the 4 elements – Air,

Earth and Water – and includes magical creatures that inhabit all three. The idea for this piece is that it will be donated back to the school and attached to one of the outdoor planter boxe.. This gives our children the opportunity to show their appreciation to Alvarado by having their artwork permanently hung in the yard. We have also created smaller replica of the larger piece for the purchaser to take home. Materials: Tile mosaic Dimensions: 52” x 14”

Class Projects for Live Auction 1st Grade, Rm 7 Ms. Raquel

“Birds of Peace Totem”

1st Grade, Rm 9 Ms. Estes

“Fabulous ABC formed by the children of Classroom 9”

Each child was asked to make an individual ceramic bird to express themselves. Some of the birds are flying or sitting, one is carrying eggs and a couple turned into dragons. We then went to the scrap yard where we found some interesting metal pieces that we welded stands from. The birds are stacked on the stands to make 2 totem poles. Materials: Ceramic birds on a metal stand Dimensions: 48" x 6"

One of a kind ABC formed by the children of classroom 9. All the letters of the alphabet are created in black and white by the shapes of the two or three children. Alvarado 2009 in bright red is a splash of color. Materials: Gallery wrap photograph (stretched on a canvas) Dimensions: 24" x 30"

Class Projects for Live Auction 2nd Grade 2nd Grade, Rm 1 Ms. Teotia

“The Messengers”

The children made figures, mostly human and animal, out of cut branches, yarn, ribbon, eucalyptus seeds and clay. These figures are displayed at the "equator" of a global structure made of wire mesh and tree branches, woven with primarily blue and yellow ribbons, giving the viewer an opportunity see the intricate, colorful details of each figure and the story they tell. Hangs from the ceiling. Materials: Mixed media. Tree branches and sticks, eucalyptus seeds, yarn, ribbon, ceramic, metal mesh wire. Dimensions: 36” diameter

2nd Grade, Rm 2 Sra. Mooney

“Insects and Plants”

In Room 2, the children raise mealworms into darkling beetles and then back to mealworms. They also grow brassica plants from seed to flower to seed. Using knowledge from their studies, and from personal observations, these young artists and scientists have been inspired to create these stunning images which were first created on paper and then transferred onto tile with special ceramic pencils. There are 21 students in Room 2 this year so to make an even number of outer tiles, Srta. Mooney drew one as well. These wonderful creations were then glazed, colored, and fired in the school's art room. The tile wall is framed in a warm brown natural wood, perfect for this delightful piece on the natural world. Materials: Ceramic tite and wood Dimensions: 24" x 36"

Class Projects for Live Auction 2nd Grade, Rm 3 Ms. Noltimier

“Loops” This sculpture must be appreciated in combination with the economy of light, then lines in space will appear on the eyes of the viewer. Art inspired by and made in honor of Ruth Asawa who founded the Art Workshop at Alvarado. (Asawa learned the looped – wire technique in Toluca, Mexico, where people use it to make egg baskets. Asawa brought the technique to the US and Alvarado children learned it on a fieldtrip to the deYoung Museum, with the support of their parents and teacher.) Dimensions: 45” x 17 “ Materials: Copper wire

2nd Grade, Rm 4 Sra. Ortiz

“Inspiration Mirror”

A special mirror surrounded by hand written river stones. Each student was asked to think of words, people, places, or things that inspire them, and to write their words on the stones in both English and Spanish. The class spent a day discussing what inspires them, and each child had to choose the words that meant the most to them. Materials: Mirror, stones, wood, metal Dimensions: 17” x 22”

Class Projects for Live Auction K/1/2, Rm 8 Ms. Pryor

“Leaf Mosiac”

This circular, mosaic piece features leaf tiles handcrafted and handpainted by the students of Room 8. After imprinting clay with leaves found on the street around Alvarado, the clay was cut and baked with the help of Mr. Dan and Lisa Gross. Students then chose colors, and painted their leaves. Finally, the children collaborated with their teachers and paraprofessionals to complete the piece with background tile. Materials: Mosiac Dimensions: 23” diameter

Class Projects for Live Auction 3rd Grade 3rd Grade, Rm 17 Ms. Engler

“Garden Basket”

The kids studied the Ohlone Indian tribe and used the knowledge that they learned to design and make one of their own. Each child came up with a basket design, which were then combined into one master plan. We have been harvesting plants from the school garden to weave into the basket. Over the course of several months the kids wove the basket into the fabulous piece you see now. Materials: Rafia and grasses from the school garden Dimensions: 15" diameter

3rd Grade, Rm 12 Ms. Hiller

“Strung Out” and “Stringing Along”

Blurring the lines between art and traditional academics, the students created stunning designs. The pieces use mostly recycled materials and were designed using geometric principals as well as mathematical patterns. The number of nails chosen to use in the circle had to be a prime number. Each layer was created using an algebraic formula to create a pattern. Each layer depends on the other layers to work as a whole and form the design. There are two pieces. One is a large showcase piece that is a traditional string art design. The smaller one represents work by each student in the class. Materials: Recycled wood, nails, math geoboard, & colored string Dimensions: 24” x 24” and 12” x 12”

Class Projects for Live Auction 3rd Grade, Rms 18 & 19 Sra. McDonagh (top) and Sr. Sierra (bottom)

“Colorful Images of the Southwest”

Hand made natural cherry wood trays created with love are adorned with beautiful artwork hand-drawn by each child. The children were inspired by images from the Santo Domingo, Mimbres, Pueblo and Pima Indians of the American Southwest. The trays were decoupaged with archival fadeless paper and a clear finish. Materials: Cherry wood Dimensions: 24" x 29" (Salón 18), 19" x 39" (Salón

19).

Class Projects for Live Auction 4th Grade 4th Grade, Rm 13 Ms. Allen

4th Grade, Rm 14 Sra. Dobrott

“Life is…”

“Thoughts for President Obama"

The students came up with a question "Life is..."which they all answered individually. Their answer is then displayed in the center of a double layered origami box. The individual boxes are then all combined together and framed to reflect all the different perceptions on life from a 4th grade perspective. Materials: Origami Dimensions: 27.5” x 39.25” The students created portraits of newly elected President Obama and wrote him letters outlining their thoughts, hopes, and wishes for his new administration as well as congratulations on his historic win. Materials: Tempera paint on cardboard Dimensions: 30” x 42”

Class Projects for Live Auction 4th/5th Grades, Rm 10 Ms. Pickens

“Designs of Nature”

Each child created a 5" x 5" batik design that was then sewn together to form the pillow. The children were inspired by various natural elements, such as seed pods, drawings of onions, lemons etc. to create a design. Their designs were then drawn onto the fabric with the hot wax and the fabric was then dyed. Materials: Fabric pillow Dimensions: 26" x 26" 4th/5th Grades, Rm 15 Sra. Woodworth
