DIMITROFF drafts second year In his first NFL Draft as General Manager of the Falcons, Thomas Dimitroff applied his expertise and constructed a class that has the potential to go down as one of the finest in franchise history. Ten of the 11 players selected earned a spot on the Falcons roster while three players were named starters and another four players logged significant playing time. Dimitroff’s draft was one of the many reasons why the first year GM was named Sporting News Magazine Executive of the Year. Dimitroff, along with Head Coach Mike Smith and quarterback Matt Ryan, became the first trio in the publication’s 123year history to earn Executive of the Year, Coach of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors in the same season. 2009 nfl draft trade improves draft order

SOLID FINDS IN THE FIRST The Falcons hold the 24th selection in the first round of the NFL Draft, marking only the ninth occasion in franchise history the team will pick at the 20th spot or higher. Atlanta has seen a great amount of success when drafting higher than the 20th pick in the draft. The last three selections, including wide receiver Michael Jenkins (2004), wide receiver Roddy White (2005) and offensive lineman Sam Baker (2008) all currently start for the Falcons. Below is a look at Atlanta’s eight past selections late in the first round.

The Falcons considerably improved their draft order after trading wide receiver Laurent Robinson, its fifth round (160th overall) and sixth round (196th overall) draft choices to St. Louis for its fifth round (138th overall) and sixth round (176th overall) selections on April 6. With the trade, the Falcons moved up 22 spots in the fifth round and 20 spots in the sixth round. The move marks the first trade for the Falcons since September 2, 2008 when the team gave the Denver Broncos a 2009 seventh round draft pick in exchange for cornerback Domonique Foxworth. On March 20, 2008, Atlanta General Manager Thomas Dimitroff conducted an advantageous trade with Oakland, which sent cornerback DeAngelo Hall to the Raiders for a second round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft and a fifth round selection in this year’s draft (143rd overall). Using’s Oakland’s second round choice last season, the Falcons drafted linebacker Curtis Lofton who started 15 games last season while contributing with 108 tackles (67 solo), one sack, one forced fumble and three passes defensed. 2008 ROOKIE IMPACT In 2008, the Falcons rookie class played a key role in helping the team to a successful campaign. Three rookies, including QB Matt Ryan, OT Sam Baker and LB Curtis Lofton all earned the starting job at their respective positions while another four first-year players saw action. Quarterback Matt Ryan - Started all 16 games under center and completed 265 of 434 passes for 3,440 yards, 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions for an 87.7 passer rating. Ryan completed a 62yard touchdown strike on his first career NFL pass. Offensive Tackle Sam Baker - The USC graduate pieced together an impressive preseason and started five games at left tackle. Linebacker Curtis Lofton - In 2008, ranked second in tackles among all rookies in the NFL and ranked fourth on the team with 108 stops (67 solo). Named to the Sporting News All-Rookie Team. Wide Receiver Harry Douglas - Douglas posted his first two career touchdowns in Week 12 against Carolina. His first came on a seven-yard end around in the first quarter. Douglas stuck again with a 61-yard punt return in the fourth quarter. In 2008, he totaled 320 receiving yards, 69 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Cornerback Chevis Jackson - Posted 33 tackles and five passes defensed in 2008. Returned his first career INT 95 yards for a touchdown against New Orleans in Week 10. Defensive End Kroy Biermann - Posted his first career sack in a Week 13 matchup against San Diego and added his second in the season finale against St. Louis. Also contributed with 14 tackles. Safety Thomas DeCoud - Saw action on special teams and finished the season with five special teams tackles.

1981, Bobby Butler, CB (25th overall) - Butler competed in 169 career games (1981-92) and currently ranks sixth on the Falcons all-time interceptions list with 27. 1989, Shawn Collins, WR (27th overall) - Collins led the Falcons in receiving at the conclusion his rookie season with 862 yards on 58 receptions. He also added three touchdowns. 1990 Steve Broussard, RB (20th overall) - Broussard led the Falcons in rushing in 1991 and 1992 while totaling 1,472 yards and 10 touchdowns in four seasons with the team. 1995 Devin Bush, S (26th overall) - In four seasons with the Falcons, Bush intercepted three passes, recorded 16 passes defensed, forced two fumbles and recovered three fumbles. 1999 Patrick Kerney, DE (30th overall) - Kerney ranks third on the Falcons all-time sack list with 58.0 while contributing with 543 tackles, 10 fumble recoveries, nine forced fumbles and 20 PBUs. 2004 Michael Jenkins, WR (29th overall) - Jenkins has started in 45 career games and has totaled 185 receptions, 2,372 yards and 17 touchdowns in 77 games. Last season he posted his best year in terms of yardage (777), receiving average (15.5) and longest reception (62 yards for a touchdown). 2005 Roddy White, WR (27th overall) - White has tallied back-toback 1,200-yard receiving seasons (2007-08) while setting a franchise record in receving yards in 2008 (1,382) en route to his first Pro Bowl berth. In 64 career games, he has notched 230 receptions for 3,536 yards while adding 16 touchdowns. 2008 Sam Baker, OT (21st overall) - Baker saw action in eight contests last season (starting in five) and was part of an offensive line that allowed a franchise-low 17 sacks in 2008.

The Falcons schedule includes two prime time games, including a Sunday night contest against the Chicago Bears at the Georgia Dome in Week 6 and a Monday Night Football matchup at New Orleans in Week 8. Atlanta will face NFC South Division rivals Carolina, New Orleans and Tampa Bay twice this season while competing against the AFC East and NFC East divisions and San Francisco (Week 5). This season’s schedule features four 2008 playoff teams, three of which also won their respective divisions (New York Giants, Carolina Panthers, Miami Dolphins).

The Falcons will have the chance to compete against one of the toughest schedules in the NFL over the course of the 2009 campaign. Taking into account their opponent’s overall winning percentage from last season (.588, 150-105-1), Atlanta holds the fourth toughest schedule and the second toughest among NFC teams. Following the league meetings held in Dana Point, California, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, members of the competition committee and team owners passed the following rule changes. • Video replays on a loose ball that could be either a fumble or an incomplete pass are now allowed. • Replay can now be used to determine if a loose ball hit the sideline. • A rekick after an illegal onside kick has been eliminated and the receiving team will immediately be awarded the ball. • The draft order for playoff teams was reworked and will be based on where teams were eliminated in the postseason. • A waiver period during the first two weeks of training camp was established. • On all fumbles and laterals that go out of bounds, the clock will start when the referee signals ready for play. Members at the league meetings also passed four rules and adjusted another to make the game safer for the players. The following changes are listed below. • The rule that is adjusted now reads that defenders who are knocked to the ground can no longer lunge into quarterbacks if the play is still ongoing. • The initial force of a blindside block can’t be delivered by a helmet, forearm or shoulder to an opponent’s head or neck. The result is a 15-yard penalty • Initial contact to the head of a defenseless receiver will draw a 15-yard penalty. • On kickoffs, no blocking wedge of more than two players will be allowed. A 15-yard penalty will go to a violating team. • Also on kickoffs, the kicking team can’t have more than five players bunched together pursuing an onside kick. Breaking the rule will result in a five-yard penalty.

Center Todd McClure holds the longest draft tenure after being selected by the team in 1999 and will enter the 2009 season having started in 112 consecutive games.
