• A college graduate can afford to buy a large, flat-screen TV in one to two months while a non-college graduate might have to work for three to four months to buy the same TV. • It’s estimated that by 2014, 90 percent of the fastest-growing careers will require some postsecondary education. • A college degree increases your chance of employment by nearly 50 percent. A two-year degree or even some college can have a positive impact on your ability to find and keep a job. The higher your education level, the higher your chances of finding and keeping a job. • Jobs for college graduates typically offer more and better benefits than jobs requiring just a high school diploma. Benefits include health insurance and retirement plans you may not get at lower-skill jobs.

You Are College Material At some time or another, many students have doubts that they are college material. Believing in yourself is the most important step to success. Millions just like you have said “I’m going.” You can, too.

Low GPAs and Test Scores? Keep Moving Forward A common myth is that only people with excellent high school grades and SAT or ACT scores can go to college. It’s just not true. • Different colleges have different admissions standards; if you don’t get into one, keep looking. • You can take the standardized tests over again to improve your scores. Because, only your highest score is reported to the colleges you’re interested in. • Several schools have open admissions policies. Two-year schools are a great opportunity to get a start on your college experience. • Special consideration is often given to students that are educationally or geographically disadvantaged, ethnic minorities or that exhibit extraordinary talents or skills. Good grades and good test scores can definitely help, but low grades and low test scores aren’t necessarily deal-breakers. Not at all.

New People, Places, Ideas College is about more than training for a career. It’s also about discovering yourself and learning to think and live independently. A lot of that occurs outside the classroom. The new people you meet, the new environments you visit, the new ideas you find – this is the stuff that helps you learn more about life. College isn’t just lessons from books; it’s about life lessons.

How should I prepare for College? Think about it: • Today’s workers, on average, will change jobs at least seven times during their career. •7  0 % of jobs that may be available in five years have yet to be invented. • The next three to four years of school will have a direct impact on the next 30 to 40 years of your career. Anybody can prepare! Below are six simple, but critical, steps that will help any high school student be on track to succeed in work, college, and could even help you qualify for grants and scholarships like Utah’s Regents’ Scholarship.

What tools are there to help me prepare?

1. 4 years of English 2. 4 years of math 3. 3.5 years of social science 4. 3 years of lab science (one each of chemistry, biology, physics) 5. 2 years of the same foreign language in grades 9-12 6. Maintain a 3.0 GPA, minimum individual grade requirements, and take the ACT Test Interested in college sports? if you follow this guide, you may meet the academic requirements to be NCAA Freshman Eligibility requirements for Division I eligibility (ncaa.org for more info). Minimum Admissions Requirements Some schools, including the University of Utah, Utah State University and Southern Utah University, have minimum admissions requirements that are calculated through a combination of your college entrance exam (ACT/SAT) and cumulative GPA. UtahFutures.org, the state’s education and career information system, provides students with access to information to help you plan and pay for college. It will help you find out about the best schools and programs that fit your interests. The Student Education Occupation Plan (SEOP) UtahFutures.org provides each student with access to an electronic SEOP. It allows students and parents to plan, track, save, and update their goals, achievements, and interests at each grade level.

Test preparation The ACT and SAT examinations may play a role in whether you are accepted into your preferred school, or earn a scholarship. Many schools use test results to place you in the appropriate courses when you enroll. Other tests such as Advanced Placement (AP) also permit students to receive college credit while in high school. UtahFutures.org provides free test preparation services for the ACT, SAT, AP, and other college preparatory exams.

Assessments are valuable tools for helping you identify individual interests, strengths, and opportunities. UtahFutures.org can direct you to potential career and educational areas that match well with your results. Majors and Degrees Do you know what you want to study in college? Utah colleges and universities offer a wide selection of majors. An up-to-date listing of certificate, associate, and bachelor, as well as graduate degrees offered at Utah schools is available at UtahFutures.org.

Types of Colleges and Universities  ertificates—licensing or certification for a specific C job or business such as bookkeeping, pipefitting, or diesel mechanics.

 octorate—Provides further training in a more specialD ized area, in occupations similar to master’s or professional degrees.

Associate’s—Awarded by community colleges and some four-year colleges upon completion of a course of study usually lasting two years such as nursing.

Types of Colleges and Universities

Bachelor’s—Awarded for a course or major that generally lasts for four years such as finance, education, or political science. Master’s or professional—Offered at a postgraduate level (usually after earning a bachelor’s degree or relevant work experience). Occupations include medicine, law, education, engineering, or business

From aviation to zoology, Utah’s colleges and universities offer a wide variety of programs and degrees to meet the needs and interests of any student. Utah has both public and private institutions. Public universities and colleges are partially funded by taxpayers, while private universities and colleges are either non-profit or for profit, and are not taxpayer-supported.

Research-based Universities—The University of Utah (the UU) is Utah’s flagship research university. Utah State University (USU) also performs extensive research as the state’s land-grant university. Regional Universities and Colleges—Institutions such as Weber State University (WSU), Southern Utah University (SUU), Dixie State College (DSC), Utah Valley University (UVU) perform both a community college and a four-year college function primarily in the region they are located. Some schools even offer master’s degrees. Community College—Primarily two-year public institutions that grant certificates, diplomas, and associate’s degrees. Utah has Salt Lake Community College, Snow

College, LDS Business College, and the College of Eastern Utah as well as four-year institutions that provide community college services across the state. Private Universities and Colleges—Brigham Young University, Westminster College, and LDS Business College are private, non-profit institutions that grant certificates, associate’s and bachelor’s degrees, as well as several master’s and doctorate degrees. Applied Technology/Proprietary—Emphasize preparation for specific skills or careers. Some programs enable students to transfer credits. However, many programs are non-credit and do not offer academic credit recognized by other colleges or universities.

SALT LAKE COMMUNITY COLLEGE Salt Lake Community College is a comprehensive, multi-campus community college throughout the Salt Lake Valley. With more than 23,000 students, SLCC is Utah’s largest two-year college. Programs are career oriented and credits are transferable. There is strong emphasis on help and support for each student. How do I Pay for College? Paying for College is Possible Don’t assume you can’t afford to go to college. There are many financial aid resources available to help you pay for it. This assistance is generally in one of the following four types of financial aid: Grants—

federal/state money given to those who qualify based upon financial need

Scholarships— money given for education, no need for repayment Work Study— money given to a qualified individual in exchange for work Loans—

Here are a few ways to help: • The financial literacy course you take during your junior or senior year in high school. •U  tahFutures.org has a wide variety of financial aid and scholarship information online. • Your high school counseling center. • College presentations at your high school. • Visit the college(s) that interests you. Schedule an appointment with a financial aid advisor at the college or university when you plan to visit and have a parent go with you if possible.

Scholarships Scholarships are awards typically based on unique criteria such as talent, achievement, financial need, etc. Billions of dollars worth of scholarships are available each year to college students across the country. Utah schools offer dozens of scholarships. Some scholarships require students to take specific classes, maintain minimal standards during your time in school (such as a minimum GPA), or take a certain number of credit hours per semester. Never applied before? Don’t worry. Applying for scholarships can be easier than applying for a job! • The best place to begin your search for scholarships is with the college(s) you plan to attend. • High school counseling centers are another excellent source for researching available scholarships. • Scholarship applications usually ask for information regarding your academic performance, extra-curricular activities, financial need, community involvement, and may ask for letters of recommendation.

Supplemental Award. Scholarship awards are based on levels of achievement, contributions to the students UESP account, number of qualified applicants and avaliable funding. Student may use this scholarship at any of Utah’s public universities or colleges, BYU, Westminster College or LDS Business College. The scholarship application and all other required documents to complete an application file are due (postmarked) February 1, 2010. For priority consideration, the deadline is January 8, 2010. To learn more about this scholarship, search “Regents’ Scholarship” on utahfutures.org New Century Scholarship (utahnewcentury.org) All public high school or home school graduates who complete the requirements of an associate’s degree while in high school, earning at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA may be eligible. Scholarship awards are based on the number of qualified applicants and available funding.

• Once you have found suitable scholarships, apply for them as soon as possible. • Some scholarships may require you to audition, be interviewed, or complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (or “FAFSA”). • Beware of scams! All college scholarship searches should be free to use and most schools have their applications available online. Here are some scholarships available to all Utah high school students: Regents’ Scholarship Students who complete the Utah Scholars Core Course of Study, meeting a minimum GPA and ACT requirements, may receive a Regents’ Scholarship. This scholarship is a tiered scholarship, where students can earn a Base Award, an Exemplary Academic Achievement Award and a Utah Educational Savings Plan (UESP)

Never applied before? Don’t worry. Applying for scholarships can be easier than applying for a job!

Centennial Scholarship (www.schools.utah.gov/curr/ Early_College/Centennial.htm) The Centennial Scholarship awards up to $1,000 to students who graduate early from high school and enroll within the same year in an eligible Utah postsecondary institution.. Utah CTE Scholarship (www.schools.utah.gov/cte/ scholarships.html) Awarded to students who excel in a Career and Technical Education (CTE) area. The awards cover one year of tuition for students who are (1) planning on attending a CTE program that is a two-year Associate Degree program or less OR (2) those who are planning to teach in a CTE area (a four-year program). Visit UtahFutures.org for more information on these and hundreds of other scholarships!

Grants Grants are awarded to students based on financial need. Like scholarships, grants don’t have to be paid back. The U.S. Department of Education uses the information reported in the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to determine your eligibility. Talk to your high school counselor or contact the financial aid office of one of the state’s universities or colleges for more information. Here are some examples of available grants: The federal Pell Grant provides a foundation of financial assistance to which other kinds of aid can be added. This award is only available to undergraduate students. The Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) is available to first and second year college students, who have completed a college preparatory curriculum while in high school, maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Loans To receive the Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART), recipient must also maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA, in addition to being Pell Grant eligible. The award is limited to third and fourth year college students. For eligibility questions please contact the financial aid office at the college you are attending.

Work Study Work study allows eligible students to earn money through a part-time job. The financial aid or student employment office at your college can help you find a work study job.

Loans are a form of financial aid that must be repaid. Like a car loan from a bank, student loans have interest. The interest rates on federal student loans are generally low. When considering a loan, you need to read the terms of the agreement carefully. Be wise about the amount of money you borrow. Higher education is one of the best investments you can make throughout your lifetime, but be realistic about the amount of money you need for school. Types of loans include: Stafford loans are variable and fixed interest loans. In some cases, the interest is not applied until six months after you leave school. This type of loan is called a Subsidized Stafford Loan. In other cases, the interest begins to accrue immediately. This type of loan is referred to as an Unsubsidized Stafford Loan.

Perkins loan is a low-interest, subsidized loan available to students with exceptional financial need. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) loans are available to parents with good credit histories. These loans are for education expenses for dependent children enrolled at least half time in an eligible program at an eligible school. Your best resource to find out more about student loans and other money for college is the Utah Higher Education Assistance Authority (UHEAA) at 801-321-7294, 877336-7378, or visit www.uheaa.org. UHEAA has been arranging loans for education for over 25 years. A UHEAA representative will review your options with you. Additional Financial Aid Resources for Students Interested in Attending College Outside of Utah The Western Undergraduate Exchange, WUE, is a program in which students may enroll in designated twoyear and four-year institutions and programs in other participating western states. It allows qualified students to attend at a reduced tuition. A list of the participating institutions and programs can be found at www.wiche.edu/sep/wue.
