Dear Fellow Sailors and Racers, I am hoping that everyone had a wonderful holiday season and is looking forward to the 2009 racing season that will soon be upon us. Your new executive committee has already been hard at work getting things in order to ensure an eventful upcoming season. It is hard to imagine that in just twelve weeks the Thaw-out Series will begin on Cherry Creek! I am excited about the continuing evolution of DSA as we look to the future of racing here in Colorado. I am hopeful that our members will see the dedication and hard work that has been put forth by the executive committee to bring DSA to the forefront of racing in Colorado. We are continuing to overhaul the current DSA website (www.denversailing.org) to provide up to date regatta information, scoring and upcoming social events. In addition, the executive committee has approved funds for new race gear including marks, pins, flags along with some much needed repairs to our race committee boat! I once again ask that everyone submit their 2009 Membership Application as soon as possible to streamline the upcoming season. To ensure another prosperous racing season it is essential that all members and crew submit the appropriate membership information and race dues. This year DSA will again host the Rocky Mountain Shootout, the Hornblower Regatta, Series racing and hopefully the Colorado Governor’s Cup later in the year should we be awarded the honor by S.A.I.L.! It is my commitment to all of you to promote, encourage and expand the possibilities of DSA to make it the most enjoyable racing Club in our State. Please feel free to contact myself or any of the Denver Sailing Association members or Fleet Captains if you have ideas on new events or would like to be involved in any aspect of our seasonal regattas. Thanks again for being a part of Denver Sailing Association and I look forward to seeing you on the water! Sincerely,

How would you rate the value of DSA events relative to current dues? Would you accept a dues increase that would fund improved maintenance of the committee boat, purchase of race gear, and web site improvements such as online registration for membership and regattas?

What was really liked about DSA? (NB: responses summarized and paraphrased.) • Nice, fun, easy going, helpful people • Parties: Wednesday Grill Nights, Fireworks Summer Dock Party, Summer Party • Sailing!; Gov Cup Races; Regatta on the 2nd day even when no wind; good competition when boats show on the line • General Organization; administraion & overall professional; Mike did a great job!; Wednesday Night RC; performance of Port Captains; protests seem to have been fairly ruled What was really disliked about DSA? (NB: responses summarized and paraphrased.) • Website not kept up to date; no weekly scores posted; no crew list or links to other sail sites • Lack of support from members; not enough boats out racing; never enough volunteers; boats not protesting when fouled • Managerial process; never notified of meetings; irresponsibility led to sinking of RC boat; slow decision making; Rules Committee needs to reign in poor sportsmanship and rule violators • Sitting out for hours on dead wind days; too much time setting courses – just start the sequence

Treasurer’s Report 2008 generated a $240 surplus. Total revenue exceeded budget due to a successful Governor’s Cup but flag membership was down 11% from 2007. Regatta attendance, up 23% for the Gov’s Cup, was otherwise unchanged from last year - each event posted a surplus and together generated $1,800 in net income. Miscellaneous income, donations and Thursday nite burgers brought in $950, nearly twice the amount budgeted.

Aggregate overhead costs were generally at budget with one huge exception – committee boat repairs. Budgeted for $500, the cost to refloat the boat, replace the steering controls, missing seat, trailer tires and bearings totaled $2,150. The $1,800 cost of the park pass program was not budgeted but was fully funded by matching contributions. Supply and insurance costs were $300 over budget due to new park requirements and an unexpected permanent mark replacement. The 2009 budget assumes a $30 increase in dues, no fees for series races and an average $55 regatta entry charge. ’09 expenses allow for $500 in committee boat hull repairs and paint, a $600 boat cover, three new permanent and four new temporary marks, a 45% increase in newsletter costs, an additional $350 for general liability coverage to the club with host liquor endorsement and an $1,250 allowance for the contract costs to make on-line payment for membership, merchandise, regatta and banquet registrations. The budget generates a $3,000 contribution to reserves. The club’s cash reserves are currently $3,400. General practice calls for a reserve equal to one year’s operating costs or an amount equal to the club’s major asset, our committee boat. The reserve should be about $15,000.

SAVE the DATE! Community Sailing 2009 Gala April 4, 2009
Save the Date for an Evening in Polynesia at Community Sailing’s 10th Annual Spirit of Sailing Gala, Saturday, April 4th, 2009, at the Phipps Tennis Pavilion. This event is a fundraiser benefiting children and a celebration of sailing honoring Steve and Jan Davis for their significant contribution to Community Sailing of Colorado (CSC) and the sport of sailing. Our special guest is Carrie Howe, 2008 Olympian, ICSA All-American Sailor, graduate of Boston College and ranked #1 on the US Sailing Team in the Yngling class. It’s time to unfurl the sails and weigh anchor, as the “Spirit of Sailing” annual gala is heading your way. CSC is dedicated to providing youth with the opportunity to learn sailing and its inherent life lessons. Sailing teaches youth confidence, independence, strategic thinking, teamwork, and respect for the environment. Since 1994, over 4200 youngsters have participated in CSC’s summer sailing camps. Our goal this year is to raise $65,000, which will enable CSC to provide education, outreach programs, youth programs, fund a scholarship program for disadvantaged children, expand activities and continue to grow an endowment for scholarships. At CSC, truly “it’s about the kids.”
Carrie Howe
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Last year we raised $49,000 through our fundraiser, and were able to award 25 children scholarships and financial aid so they could participate in our summer sailing camps. Children came from disadvantaged families that could not afford a summer camp. Some were Youth-At-Risk and some were Special Needs Kids, (Autistic, Disabled, Deaf, Blind, Downs Syndrome, ADD and many more Special Needs). Over 400 children have participated in our disadvantaged/special needs programs.
