Board Meeting

President's Letter

The next board meeting will be Tuesday, November 4, 2008, 6:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny.

I'm off to the AQS show in Houston Tx in 8 days!! Houston has become an annual event for myself and a few of our other members. I look forward to the fellowship of quilters, shops, the SHOW, and a little warmer weather. This year we are going to try to drive to Galveston to see the damage from Ike and especially see what has become of one of our favorite shops, Quilts by the Bay.

Colleen Curry is our November speaker. Our next guild meeting is Tuesday, November 11th, 7:00 p.m., at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny. Colleen Curry will present a Progress of Technology Trunk Show with techniques, style, & artistic insight from 1995 to now. It's not too late to join the Fabric Painting Workshop with Colleen Curry on Wednesday, November 12th. Please let Linda Northwick know if you are interested, 964-5594.

I forgot to mention, Congratulations to Amy Leonard for winning 2nd place in the Traditional Wall Quilts category at the Des Moines AQS show.

Presidents Challenge

Secretary's Report

I have thought more about some of the questions asked about my challenge. I will leave it up to you to interpret the rules as to what a strip is, that is part of the fun to see what different things people come up with following the same set of rules. This will not be a big stress type of challenge, there will not be a first, second and third prize--it is just for fun. If there is a prize that is just extra fun. We will have stickers or signs on the quilts at the quilt show to point out that you where part of the presidents challenge and I think the brochure will have an explanation of what the challenge was.

Sharon Meisenheimer gave our October presentation on “Rules of Life Learned”. She concluded her talk with quilt care and storage tips. These are good things to remember for displaying and storing your quilts! If they are on display: 1. Keep them out of direct sun. Fabrics fade even with artificial light. 2. Turn them at least once a year. 3. Be careful how they are hung. Use a sleeve or quilt hanger so weight is evenly distributed. 4. It they are folded, refold them so the creases are not permanent. If they are stored: 1. Keep them in a new washed pillow case. Old pillow cases have oils in them. Do not use plastic bags. Keep them away from direct contact with wood. 2. Refold these quilts also. Do not dry clean them. If you have the urge to wash an old quilt, lie down until the urge passes.

Quilt Show News submitted by Lanae Rohwer It’s hard to believe another year is almost behind us! The weather is starting to turn cold and as a quilter I start thinking about the Christmas gifts I want to make and give to family and friends. As you are planning for and making your holiday gifts, please consider making an extra item for the Country Store or use your project scrapes to create a new treasure to donate to the Country store. The item will be auctioned off via a silent auction throughout the quilt show and the winners will be announced Saturday afternoon at the close of the show. Peggy Vespestad will be in charge of the Country Store again next year, so please give your completed items to her. Wow, we already have 3 Gemstone baskets adopted! There is still 1 birthstone basket (baby quilt kit) and 4 Gemstone baskets (lap size quilt kit) available for adoption. The gemstone baskets will be at the country store where quilt show attendees can purchase chances to win the completed quilt or quilt kit. After you have all the items for you basket you can give to Lanae or MaryLee between now and May 2009. The baskets will be constructed by the quilt show committee. Please contact MaryLee Martz to adopt your basket. We still have the setup position and the advertising position on the quilt show committee. Please contact Lanae Rohwer if you would like more information on the position or are interested in filling one of them. Fall is a perfect time to visit The Harvest Table quilt shop in rural Norwalk, Iowa! The shop is located 4 miles south of the Des Moines airport on highway R57. Donnis Blake begins her 12th year as shop owner with fresh ideas, new patterns and a change in shop hours. This year The Harvest Table is experimenting with the shop being open by appointment only. These on call hours can be arranged with Donnis any day of the week, just give her a call, (515) 981-4307.

The Harvest Table has a line of their own patterns. The Puckered Pumpkin pattern is made with a fat quarter. The Fun in the Snow pattern, below, features snowmen made with a gripped textured fabric—like the stuff used for the feet on baby sleepers.

Classes continue each week on Wednesday & Thursday evenings. There are classes for all levels of quilters; beginners learn sashing and border techniques and how to bind and finish their quilts. There are block of the month classes for intermediate and advanced quilters. Each month (currently on the 4th Thursday) there is a class where you make a small seasonal project. Classes are small, maximum 8 people in each, and there are new ones starting all the time. Donnis Blake likes the country style.
