Pelikula@TitusBrandsma Presents
Celebration of Life 13 December 2003 / 1 p.m. Titus Brandsma Center / 24 Acacia Street, Bgy. Mariana, New Manila, Quezon City NIGHTS OF CABIRIA / Le Notti di Cabiria 1957 - ITA - 117 mins. NIGHTS OF CABIRIA opens with a woman enjoying the company of her man by the riverside, which is followed by her being thrown into the river by her beloved. The guy runs off with her handbag and she nearly drowns but the experience didn't diminish her faith that a "knight in shining armor" would rescue her from the lonely and pointless life in prostitution. The movie may be melancholic and tragic at times but it didn't lose its optimism, mainly due to Guiletta Massina (Fellini’s real-life wife) who is described by some as the female Charlie Chaplin. Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film. 1958 BAFTA Film Award Best Film from any Source (nom), Best Foreign Actress (nom). 1957 Academy Awards Best Foreign Film (win). 1957 Cannes Film Festival Competing Film, Best Actress (win). 1957 Italian Nat'l. A PLACE IN THE WORLD / Un Lugar en el Mundo 1992 - ARG - 120 mins. A PLACE IN THE WORLD can be best remembered with this quote: We know that we lost the war but we want to win a battle at least. It's the mantra of a middle-aged couple who are salvaging what is left of their Communist-leaning ideals in the northern Argentine interior. An amiable Spaniard comes their way, they unknowing that he is hired by one wealthy señorito interested in making the inland his private domain. In the eyes of the couple's young son, he'll learn why everyone needs to dream and search for their own place in the world. Cecilia Roth ("All About My Mother") stars in one of the finest Argentine movies ever made. An Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Film. 1993 Academy Awards Best Foreign Film (nom). 1993 Argentinian Film Critics Association Awards Best Film (win). 1993 Fribourg Int'l. TAMPOPO 1986 - JAP - 110 mins. TAMPOPO has a premise frequently used in old Hollywood Western flicks: a cargo truck driver and company decides to help a housewife in opening a noodle shop. They stand by her in every struggle. It's the vignettes in between scenes that make this Japanese film a gem though, as it touches on various aspects of life and how food plays a vital role in all of them. The movie both celebrates life and food, which is a favorite subject of not a few. 1988 Independent Spirit Awards Best Foreign Film (nom). Direction: Juzo Itami. Production: Juzo Itami, Seigo Hosogoe, Yasushi Tamaoki. Screenplay: Juzo Itami. Cinematography: Masaki Tamura. Editing: Akira Suzuki. Art Direction: Takeo Kimura. Musical Score: Kunihiko Murai.
