Rebecca is Daphne du Maurier’s tale of an innocent, young woman marrying Maxim de Winters, a wealthy English nobleman, only to be haunted afterwards by the memory of Rebecca, his deceased first wife. Alfred Hitchcock wasn’t only very faithful to the novel (actually, he only made two minor changes) but his penchant for mystery and suspense makes Manderley (the humungous abode where the novel is set) creepy and Rebecca’s faithful servant Mrs. Danvers close to diabolic.
